How lovely to hear from you. I have lots of photos so please let me know when you have a PC. Alternatively I can scan and post to you, at your work address if you feel that would be safer. i understand you would not want to give you address to a stranger, even if we are sort of related! Yes Thomas definitely served in both wars, he was in the Home Guard in the Anti-Aircraft Command.

Its very exciting to know that we have relatives out there. I am sure that June would love to know that Lily is still alive. Where does she live, dont give me address, just place. Perhaps you culd pass a message on to her?

I am happy to give you my mobile if you would like a caht.

Lorie

Hi Lorie and Lisa
As you can see, I have got back to the message board at last! Yes, I am the daughter of Connie. I remember uncle Tom well and am still in contact with a couiple of his children. I was supprised to hear that he was in both wars though as he would have been in his 40s in ww2 after (according to my mum) being gassed at Ypres and left not A1. I would love the picture of my mum, her sisters Vic and Hannah, however I only use my work computer and there are things we can't send or receive here. The good news is that I am off to Essex to collect a secomd hand computer from my friend at the end of the month, so after that will join this site and be able to communicate more, do a tree etc. I have several photos of uncle Tom and may have one of June. I still see Aunt Lily, who is in her 90s now and is Vic's widow. Bye for now from Viv

Hi Lorie
It's not that I mind giving you my address etc., but until I become a member of this site, my personal info would have to be out in the public domain on this message board! I will get my act together by the end of March when I have my computer and then I can join the site and will certainly contact you as soon as I can. Lily is in Essex and lives with her daughter Lilian and Lilian's husband Derek. Lilian is also doing her own research and Lily is a wonderful scource of information about the family. In will let her know that you are around. Me and my husband live in Exeter, but come to Sussex sometimes to visit his brother and family so who knows, maybe we can meet in Pompey sometime in the future!! Viv

The 1911 UK census is now online at http://www.1911census.co.uk/ I'm going to be looking at it specifically for Bowheys in the next few days, but since it's rather expensive to see the actual image, I thought I'd ask if anyone already has the images for transcriptions.

Her father Thomas William Bowhay certainly served in both wars and his military records are available to view. My husband is called Thomas after both of them. How are we related? Have a look at my tree it is the Skilleter Family tree and follow my husbands line Eamon Thomas Coffey. Let me know what your tree is as I would love to see how we are related.

Lorie

G,Day to all the Bowhay Clan.
My god I just cannot believe I stumbled across this. my name is David Blackie I was a WW2 London evacuee to Blackawton, attended Blackawton school for five years; from age nine to fourteen.

I knew "old Ernie Bowhay" as he was known very well indeed, he was one hell of a character, could be a gruff old so and so, but a lovely man with a wonderful sense of humour and a bellowing laugh; he was the best "Rick" builder in South Devon, I worked with him as a boy quite often at Harvest time along with Percy Joint, he and old Ernie were great rivals.

Ernie had a daughter Pamela, strangely enough it was only a few days ago, I discovered a website for Blackawton Primary school, with email point of contact, to which I wrote a letter in which I mentioned Pamela.

Well I am just blown away by this, I will finish by saying "old Ern' certainly loved his cider, and at Harvest time along with Percy would have put a big dent in Mr Leonard Foale's cider stock.

Hope to hear from anyone with connections to Blackawton.

David Blackie

BOWHAY becoming BOWEY

There is growing evidence that some of the BOWHAY families in the Southwest of England may have changed to the BOWEY surname in the nineteenth century.

Yes, I'm descended from Richard Dewhurst, which I don't think is connected to your lot, however I do have one great aunt (Dewhurst daughter) who was born in America.
When I saw the name Morton in the Evanion and the next one Bohee, it had me pondering.
Interestingly Farquhar is gaelic for 'red eyebrows' - I wonder if there are any in the family who are still redheads. My great x 2 uncle had Farquhar as a Christian name because of his red eyebrows.
I looked up my book "Profiles of African American Stage Performers and Theatre People, 1816-1960" By Bernard L. Peterson
[This directory includes over 500 African American performers and theater people who have made a significant contribution to the American stage from the early 19th century to the beginning of the civil rights movement]
Bohee Brothers
James Douglas Bohee (d.1897) and George Bohee (d.1930). Celebrated team of the minstrel stage; active 1870s/1890s. They were also singers, dancers and minstrel troupe owners. Their speciality was singing and playing the banjo as an accompaniement to a soft-shoe dance of their own creation.
They performed their first minstrel troupe, the Bohee Minstrels (1870s), then with Haverly's Colored Minstrels (1880-1882), which toured England with great success. There they remained after the rest of the troupe had returned to the States, entertaining and giving banjo lessons to British high society and royalty, including King Edward VII.
While in England they formed their second company of minstrels, called the Bohee Brothers Minstrels (1890), which performed mainly in London , where they made their permanent home.
Their third troupe, which they called the Bohee Operatic Minstrels, an integrated troupe, opened in Picadilly Circus in 1899, then toured the British provinces for one season before disbanding.
Further reference: BioDAfMus (Souther). Ghost (Sampson).

Was this the James Bohee who married Elizabeth Dewhurst or his son?

hI, my great grandfather came from calstock in cornwall and was captain of the mines working around that area, apparently he emigrated to South Africa working on the diamond mines and the trail ends there. My grandad was John Henry Bowhay, he had a brother Joseph, and a sister Ruby and maybe some others. He married Grace Exworthy and had 3 sons and one daughter (Jack, William, Geoffery and Barbara Bowhay), my father is William Henry Bowhay. I am only just starting to look for ancestors etc

We have amassed a large quantity of info on the Bohees from the net and other sources over the years including those Evanion catalogue playbills.Thankfully his career has been widely documented.it is a fascinating story!
The discovery of Louisa Dewhurst (also a singer/banjoist) being linked to the Bohees is more recent. The connection is thus: Louisa's older sister, Elizabeth Faruqhar(nee Dewhurst) (B.1845/46) had a daughter, Matilda. It is Matilda who had a son to James in 1888.
There is also in the Evanion catalogue a playbill of Dobson/Dewhurst and their Banjo Academy.
Are you a Dewhurst descendent???

hi
am researching my greatgrandfather, James D Bohee, born in St John New Brunswick Canada in 1844. His parents James Snr and Isabella (nee Young) were married in the area in 1837. They have been listed as Bohay and Bowhay and Bohea, becoming finally Bohee once the family immigrated to the US round 1860. Looking for info on their history. Africain/Canadian/Americain/European mix and possibly indian too!
I have just looked at my family tree and Thomas Ernest and Emily are there.

Okay this is our connection. Thomas Ernest had a brother Francis Hall Bowhay and that is our connection. Francis Hall Bowhay married Frances M Hall. They had a son Frank Leonard Bowhay - my husband's grandfather. I think that makes Thomas Ernest my husband's great great uncle. Your mother and my husband's grandfather were cousins.

I am more than happy to add that part of the family tree for you - I can sort the information into pdf files and email it if you like.

Just curious - did Thomas Ernest serve in WW1?

I would be most grateful if I could have some information about Ann. That is as far as my FIL got - Nicholas and Ann and I managed to get Nicholas and Betty but being in Australia I can only do so much online.

I haven't tried the GenUki site yet. Must try that as a lot of my family hailed from Devon and other parts of the UK too.

Cheers
Lisa

Well the very same “old Ernie Bowhay” was my Grand Father! Pamela being my mother…

I recall many a summer trip as a youngster in the ’70’s travelling the seemingly endless miles from Leicestershire down to South Hams on the annual family pilgrimage to visit the Grand Parents.

I’ll keep an eye on this old thread for any sign of life and pass on its existence to my Mother, I’m sure that she will be fascinated….

You’ve just got to love the Internet and the magic of Google.

Best regards…

hello Lisa
How lovely to hear that your husband is one of Frank's relatives! My mum and her family spent good times with their cousins and mum and frank were good friends. They corresponded for a while when Frank went into the navy. Frank also sent a picture to mum from Malta. It is of 2 sailors from the Royal Soverign, Mum told me several times which one was Frank, but as is so common, we did not write that information on the back of the photo. I am also sure I remember her saying that the other lad in the photo is one of Frank's brothers, but would 2 brothers be on the same ship? I have a postcard of the ship too, in Port Said. How did Frank get on in life?

Thomas Ernest did serve in WW1. The blacksmith proffession was kept on through the family as coachsmiths then ironsmiths then engineers. Thomas was a blacksmith in the war in Mesopotamia. I think that was in the royal corp of transport. His eldest son tommy was in the trenches and survived being gassed sat Ypres to live to a good age although he could no longer be an ironsmith.

Myself, I am not much of a computer person and only usually go on the computer at my meal breaks or after my shifts finish here at work or get my free half-hour in the library. Mainly because computers get my eyes hurting quite quickly. Similary, I am taking a long time to do the research at the Records ofice because the microfich have the same effect!

It would be good to swop our own family trees and I will send you what I have found out regarding Ann and will get on Nicholas and Bettys' case when I return from holiday in a couple of weeks' time.
regards
from Viv

hi
thanks for all that info. I'd traced myself back to Nicholas Bowhey and Betty via Nicholas Bowhey and Ann (Jarvis)his wife. Nicholas junior was blacksmith at Milcombe then the family moved to Charleton where his wife was born.
Viv

Hello Lisa
yes,it sounds as if I am related to your husband. I am aged 59 and my mum was a bowhay - I am the daughter of Constance Bowhay and her dad was Thomas Ernest Bowhay who married Emily and who was born in Westminster. Was he a relative of your husband or are we more distant than that?
My cousin did lots of work on the family tree and ended with Nic and ann in Charleton. She then passed the info to me as I live in Devon so am 'on the spot' for looking in the Devon Records Office. I could not get past the Charleton connection and it was only about a month ago that I found Nic and Betty on the mormon register, then googled Blackawton and found more info on the Genuki site. Meanwhile, I began to trace Ann's parents back and you are welcome to what I have found so far.
Regards from Viv
