hi
am researching my greatgrandfather, James D Bohee, born in St John New Brunswick Canada in 1844. His parents James Snr and Isabella (nee Young) were married in the area in 1837. They have been listed as Bohay and Bowhay and Bohea, becoming finally Bohee once the family immigrated to the US round 1860. Looking for info on their history. Africain/Canadian/Americain/European mix and possibly indian too!

I looked up my book "Profiles of African American Stage Performers and Theatre People, 1816-1960" By Bernard L. Peterson
[This directory includes over 500 African American performers and theater people who have made a significant contribution to the American stage from the early 19th century to the beginning of the civil rights movement]
Bohee Brothers
James Douglas Bohee (d.1897) and George Bohee (d.1930). Celebrated team of the minstrel stage; active 1870s/1890s. They were also singers, dancers and minstrel troupe owners. Their speciality was singing and playing the banjo as an accompaniement to a soft-shoe dance of their own creation.
They performed their first minstrel troupe, the Bohee Minstrels (1870s), then with Haverly's Colored Minstrels (1880-1882), which toured England with great success. There they remained after the rest of the troupe had returned to the States, entertaining and giving banjo lessons to British high society and royalty, including King Edward VII.
While in England they formed their second company of minstrels, called the Bohee Brothers Minstrels (1890), which performed mainly in London , where they made their permanent home.
Their third troupe, which they called the Bohee Operatic Minstrels, an integrated troupe, opened in Picadilly Circus in 1899, then toured the British provinces for one season before disbanding.
Further reference: BioDAfMus (Souther). Ghost (Sampson).

Was this the James Bohee who married Elizabeth Dewhurst or his son?

I became interested in the Bohee story so started to look up details on the internet.
I came across these newspaper clippings and wondered whether there was a connection:

We have amassed a large quantity of info on the Bohees from the net and other sources over the years including those Evanion catalogue playbills.Thankfully his career has been widely documented.it is a fascinating story!
The discovery of Louisa Dewhurst (also a singer/banjoist) being linked to the Bohees is more recent. The connection is thus: Louisa's older sister, Elizabeth Faruqhar(nee Dewhurst) (B.1845/46) had a daughter, Matilda. It is Matilda who had a son to James in 1888.
There is also in the Evanion catalogue a playbill of Dobson/Dewhurst and their Banjo Academy.
Are you a Dewhurst descendent???

Yes, I'm descended from Richard Dewhurst, which I don't think is connected to your lot, however I do have one great aunt (Dewhurst daughter) who was born in America.
When I saw the name Morton in the Evanion and the next one Bohee, it had me pondering.
Interestingly Farquhar is gaelic for 'red eyebrows' - I wonder if there are any in the family who are still redheads. My great x 2 uncle had Farquhar as a Christian name because of his red eyebrows.
