I believe I am in the family line.

I am a Bowden which I believe was a part line descended from son John Bowdoin whom I believe is my 6th great grandfather (changed the spelling to Bowden ) who moved to Virginia and later further south to North Carolina. William, one of his sons moved to Georgia and later to Texas.

If anyone has any further information on this family lineage I'd appreciate it.

Bowdoin was the same artist who married Florence Tapley, daughter of Gilbert Tapley of Danvers. They had two children: Gilbert Tapley Bowdoin and Fidelia Bowdoin, named after their maternal grandparents. Gilbert lived in Lynn and Fidelia in Danvers; neither married. I have 8 ambrotypes of members of the Tapley family, including a full plate of Gilbert Tapley. Only one is marked. It shows his nephew Walter Tapley with a maid and is labeled "AMBROTYPE BY/BOWDOIN" and " JTTING'S PATENT/JULY 4 & 11. 1854"

Hey cuz,
Before I get into this, I need to ask when Daniel was born. I do have a Daniel born Sept 1895, parents Turner Monroe Bowdoin & Martha, born Feb 1876, I do not her maiden name.

I need to correct some of your facts. You had John as Gov of NY, actually it was James who was Gov of Mass. This James was the son grandson of Pierre Baudouin our first in this country, arrived ~1686. Pierre was a French Huguenot who fled France due to religious persecution. He left with his wife and four children. I suggest you start with a google search for James Bowdoin, you'll get plenty of hits. Also, search a book site such as Amazon, there's a good book on him.

You're correct that the school is named after the Gov Bowdoin. It was James' son, also James that donated property, funds, to start the school.

There are family reunions every year that take place in Coffee County, Alabama. If of interest, sleet me know.

FYI, I am 13th generation in Pierre's line.

All for now.
Rick Bowdoin

My name is Ann Bowdoin Davis. My grandfather was Daniel Arthur Bowdoin and my grandmother Bama Clark Bowdoin did research on the Bowdoin family and found out the same thing that you speak of. She said they came to Savannah, GA. and some migrated to Coffee County, Al. Some migrated to N Y and John Bowdoin was governor of N Y, and started BowdoinCollege in Mine. There are three towns in that area named for the Bowdoins. I have visited them and Bowdoin College several years. I now live in Lumberton, NC and am a retired school teacher. Most of my relatives are deceased except for an aunt and a few 4th cousins.

My name is Ann Bowdoin Davis, Lumberton, NC. My grandfather was Daniel Arthur Bowdoin, Elba, Al. My grandmother Alabama Clark (Bama) Bowdoin did research before her death, and l earned that the Bowdoin’s came from France to Savannah, Ga. Some of them migrated to Coffee County, Alabama and were farmers. They had 5 girls and 2 sons. Foy Bowdoin was my father. She also learned that some of the Bowdoins migrated to N Y State, and that John Bowdoin was governor of N Y, and started Bowdoin College in Maine. My husband and I visited there several years ago and went through Bowdointon, Bowdoinville, and Bowdoin, Maine. We toured Bowdoin College and found that the Bowdoin reunion was held there the summer before I visited. I did have relatives that spelled their name Bowden as Bobby Bowden, the retired coach at FSU. We use to spell our name Bowden, but changed the spelling to Bowdoin before I was born. My aunt, Dannette Bowdoin Prescott, a retired teacher like myself lives in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. She is my only living relative other than Jim Bowdoin, Bristol, TN ( 4th cousin I think), and Catherine Bowden Young, Elba, AL. If any Bowdoin family member has any knowledge of this history that I have s hared, I would be interested in corresponding with them.

So far, I have only been able to trace back to John Lorenzo Bowdoin, DOB: 1856. His brother, was Howard Bowdoin, born 1860. They are from Griffin, Spalding, GA, however, they have all ended up in California.
Also, John Lorenzo's wife was Nettie Sparks, may have originally been known as Antonette.

You may not be on the website any longer, but "John Baudouin" came over from Belgium in 1887. His son "Joseph" changed it to "Bauduin". I think the other brothers changed it as well.

Brian Bauduin

Yes, it was changed by Joseph Bauduin, who was born 1892, after his father "John" came over from Belgium. It is now "Bauduin"

Bowdoin Family Crest

When I was younger (I'm 20 now), my grandfather Alto C. Bowdoin Jr. gave me a patch of the family crest that he would normally sell at the family reunion in Alabama. If anyone knows what I'm talking about please email me at cristosdethbed@gmail.com.

I plan on getting it tattooed on my back (I already have Bowdoin tattooed across), but I was wondering if anyone has any different variations. My grandfather has a slightly different crest hanging in his living room, so it made me wonder if there were any more.

Thanks!
Christi Bowdoin

I show Tempa A. Arwood married to Daniel T. Bowdoin. She was the daughter of Jessie Arwood who was the son of John Hensley Arrowood. Jessie changed the spelling or the census taker did. They had a son named George Washington Bowdoin which would indicate some connection to someone else with the name of "George Washington".

arrow5807@bellsouth.net

Re: Bowdin, Staffordshire, England, 1800s

Now...here is what may be the problem with you finding your roots. In 1685, king Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes.
many of the Baudouin family moved to other places to avoid death because they were Huguenots. the families soght refuge in Prussia, anouther established themselves in the Low Lands, and the third branch in England, Pierre Baudouin was the branch that came to what became America. All the people who are "Bowdoin" are related to this family. The Hebri Auguste Baudouin was in Germany and his title was that he was from Noue. He lived around 1710-1800. He married Marie Auguste of Frankfurt. I hope this is some help and if you think this may be your line then I do have more. contact me at: sueannbee@aol.com

Sorry, I did what I fuss about others doing. James Alfred Arwood, birth name Alford James Bowdoin, born 7 Jul 1887 Coffee Co, AL, gave his mother's name as Bay Arwood and father Charlie Bowdoin in 1953. Bay may have been a nickname for Eugenia Arwood, 1867-1896, daughter of George W. Arwood (1834-1921) and Sarah Ann Harper. James was listed with George and then wife Georgia in 1900 as Alford J Bowdoin with his sisters Ollie (1890) and Ethel (1891). Looking for info on father - Charlie Bowdoin probably of Coffee Co, AL. Thanks
