My ancestor, Mary Bowden (born 1730), was a "Mulatto" Indentured Servant to George Washington family. She lived at Popes' Creek, the Birthplace of George Washington, for about forty years. She was taken there at the age of seven, from a family in Westmoreland County Virginia. I believe that my ancestor was taken from the Rappahannock Indian Tribe in the area. The term "Mulatto" was given to Natives in 1704.
There is a grave at Popes Creek in which Mary's forebearers may be buried. The Grave is in a circle and buried in the Woods. I believe it is an Indian burial Ground.
I am interested in hearing the Native stories others have.
