Researching the Bourquin family for a friend. While researching my own family in Edison, Nebraska, I came across a newspaperarticle referencing the visit of Will Bourquin and his family visiting my family in 1930's. Just thought it was interesting.

My friend's Bourquin's were mostly in the Kansas City area.

Hi. Some of my ancestors were Bourquins from Sonvilier. I would be interested in exchanging info. My ggggrandmother was Sophie Anaise Bourquin who married a Daenger from Boujean (near Bienne) in the 1840s. They lived in Renan, the next village down the valley where their only child, Lise Anaise Daenger was born 17 January 1847.

My Bourquin ancestors came from the Neuchatel region. My Bourquin starting point is Mary Ann Bourquin. She was born abt 1786. She married Abraham Perret (Perry) aproximately 1814. The Perrets emigrated to Canada, then to the U.S about 1820.
I have found a great many Bourquin names for your region of Switzerland. Some appear to be related to Mary Ann Bourquin.
I have the data grouping's and would share them with you. Perhaps you may have data I also could use?
Thank you
Stephen Knight

answer to "kellu_1" asking:

<< I am researching the Bourquin's of Swiss ancestry.... settled in Kansas. >>

The earliest Swiss Bourquin I have in KS, arrived on the ship Labrador, from Le Havre to NY, 11 Jun 1879 .

Louis Paul & Cecile Adele Bourquin, and family, who settled first in Spicer, Richardson, NE, before moving to Wendell, Thomas, KS

I have another family of Swiss in 1900 : in Mission, Brown, KS
Emile & Olive Bourquin [indexed by Ancestry as Bomquise]

both of these families were from the Canton of Berne but may not be related: Louis Paul Bourquin was a farmer, Emile was a jeweler.

then, in 1900 Hackberry, Labette, KS.
Edward Bourquin, born in OH, of Swiss father & French mother.

I have collected some info on these 3 families but I cannot dig more in my notes until September [we travel for work, and rarely have acces to the Internet.]
I will be happy to share what I have.
Henri Bourquin - Mauritius Holiday - query of authenticity

I have in the past few months received contact from someone claiming to be a descendant of Henri Bourquin who is trying to organise a family gathering in Mauritius.
I find this suspicious partly due to not being able to find the said restort via google. The overall nature of the email concerns me that firstly it has been sent correctly to me as a descendant of Henri Bourquin, secondly that the emails are increasing focussed on the request for money and thirdly that they are enticing people having collected their details from a forum or the like in order to be able to select so accurately the descendants. In the past years I've written on several forums regarding my search for information on my Bourquin ancestors so am intrigued as to where they have pulled this information from. (I don't believe it's ancestry.com as the email came direct to one of my email addresses) Have any other Henri Bourquin descendants received this invitation?

We had a Bourquin reunion in Mesquite, Tx. this year and plan on having one each year. If you are interested let me know and we will exchange more details. Love finding cousins we did not know we had. Was your grandfather Boots or Arvad?

My grandfather was the son of Earnest Clinton and Mary as well and unfortunately I haven't gotten to really meet any of my relatives, except my grandfathers' twin brother. Its nice to know they are out there and I'm happy to know the family line will continue on.

He went to the short lived Illinois College Medical school in Jacksonville, IL. Evalina would be Parmenio's sister. Pamenio named one of his daughters after Evalina, and one of his son's after Louis Bourquin. I just need to figure out all these Phillips.

Info from Laurel Hill Cemetery came. It's very confusing. Louis A. (died 1845) Evalina (1878) are in plot 1, Mary Adams (who was called a bound girl) living with Evalina when she died in 1873 at the age of 17. Grace Ann, who was Louis and Evalina's daughter, and Sarah Bourquin Fox, who's daughter was Katherine Bourquin Travers.
Sarah Bourquin, in the Florida Death records, which are online, says her parents are Joesph B. Summons and Elizabeth Armstrong. How does she get the last name Bourquin? Sarah was born in 1853 so Louis can't be her father, and Evalina the mother. Her daughter, Katherine B. Travers says Grace is her aunt and Evalina her grandmother. She was born in 1881. In the 1880 census of Philly it does show Joseph Summons as the father, Elizabeth Summons the mother and Sarah Barquin the daughter living at home. I'm confused. The only children I ever found for Louis and Evalina is Louis Jr. and Grace. Louis was born in 1837, did he marry and divorce Sarah? Did Evalina have a child out of wedlock? I kind of doubt that.

Hi,
I did find out they are buried in the Locust Hill Cemetery in Philliy. Louis A., the father, died April 23, 1845 and was buried in the 5th Baptist Cemetery but was moved when the church sold the property, and bought a section of lot 6 in Locust Hill. Evalina died March 16, 1878 at the age of 65. Grace Town died May 6, 1896 at the age of 50. Her husband, Gustav Town died in May 1863 in the Civil War, he was a Colonel, buried in VA. Others buried in the lot was Mary A. Adams, who died March 31, 1873 at the age of 17. This could not have been a child of Louis and Evalina. Catherine Phillips died Dec. 1891 at the age of 89. Could be Evalina's sister? Sara B Fox died June 27, 1921 at the age of 67. And last Catherine B. Travers Feb. 12, 1945 at the age of 64.
The cemetery is sending me all the info they have regarding this Bourquin lot, but it probably won't answer any questions. There were no relations, just dates.

Looking for relatives of Louis P. Bourquin. He was born in Philly in 1837, fathers name is unknown, mother was Evalina Phillips. He moved to Virginia, IL in the late 1850s, joined the Union for the Civil War, then ended up working for Sears in Chicago. He married Jane Mitchell, then moved to the U.P. of Michigan around 1890 where he opened a General Store. He died in 1925. I'm sure his father is somehow connected to the other Bourquin families in Philadelphia in that time period.

Constant Bourquin

Trying to trace Bourquin lineage of Constant Bourquin b. February 1827 in Bonchamp, France? He married a woman first name of Julia. They had five children. Louisa 1860-1893, Julia 1863-1864, Charles 1865-1953, Lewis 1868-1869 and Constance 1869-1942. My connection is with Constance. Father of Constant is Jean B. Bourquin? b. about 1790 and married to Francoise ? b. about 1786. I am interested in info about Jean B. Bourquin and his ancestors. Thanks in advance for any information you may have.
Christine Bourquin

<< I'm sure his father is somehow connected to the other Bourquin families in Philadelphia in that time period. >>

Your Bourquins are French.

In 1850 Phila, you had 2 main Bourquin branches:
GERMAN: the family of John Friedrich Bourquin, they came from Bethlehem, PA
and
SWISS: the family of Charles & Frederick Bourquin, lithographers, who came from NY, to Phila & Camden, NJ.

I am not sure that any male Bourquins who came earlier were still present in Phila at this time.

Yours may just be a single Bourquin who came ca1836, married, had 2 daughters & a son, and died about 10 years later.

[Long shot: I did not look into this one: Fred Burgain, 1840 Northern Liberties Ward 2, Philadelphia]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I may not tell you anything new, but here is what your post helped me match in my database:

Evalina is listed as Ellen in 1860 Phila.

The tip-off was in 1870 she lives with Grace Town, born ca 1844, and in 1860 with her 2 daughters (I suppose) Mary & Grace.

confirmed by the mormons:
Grace Ann Bourquin born Phila
spouse Gustavus W. Town , Marriage: 15 FEB 1863 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA
Batch No.: M748732

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry any more, so, it's a bit tougher to discover new info.
But, I found this:

1850 Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA
Emmaline Bouquet 1813	Delaware, female
Lucy Bouquet 1838	Philadelphia
Grace Bouquet 1842	Philadelphia, female

I am ready to bet that "Lucy Bouquet" [not indexed as "female"] is your Louis.
This leaves Mary out, but she could me on the image, indexed under another name. [the URL tells me there should be at least 3 other persons in the household]

Now I know that the father, most certainly, died between 1846 & 1850.

I had the family from 1900 Marenisco, MI ; to 1930 Evansville, WI ; but I did not have the connection to Phila.
Now I do.
Thanks.

[I will have to study this more deeply when I have time, after September]

<< a link to the info from the Mormons? >>

no, not a single link.
I NEVER look into "family group sheets" - too many errors.

I used their old search.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...

_ I searched for Frederic Bourquin, born 1808 Switzerland

got 4 results. made note of the parents names.

_ searched for Charles 1803-1807 [2 results].

_ Louis 1805-1809: 1 Louis Adolphe.

only parents in common were DAVID IMER BOURQUIN & SUSANNE MARCHAND.
and, batch number # 8832620

I then searched the International Genealogical Index:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...

search # 8832620 , Continental Europe, Bourquin.

It takes time, but by narrowing dates of birth (born before they left in 1817), I found the twins.
They could be more.

Then, I used similar process to find their father and his siblings.

It looks like Louis left Philadelphia to join some Phillips relatives in IL.

Do you have this 1860 census image ? VERY interesting.

1860 Virginia, Cass, Illinois [M653 ; Roll: 160 ; Page: 76]

Lewis P Bougan, 22, 1838, PA
lives with a "Philips" family.

head: Jamima S Philips [Ancestry] or Pamenia S Philips [Heritage Quest] : 43 , 1817 , DE ; ? "Phisician"
wife Eliza R Philips, 32 , 1828 , CT
6 children born in IL (7m to 11y)

[ the hand writting is awful. First names are mostly wrong and will require some study ]

------------------------------------------------------------
I got the image for 1850 Philadelphia Locust ward:

No trace of a Mary Bourquin , but those Bourquet and Bouquet are definitivly your Bourquin.

#660
I was right about "Lucy" : clearly written Lewis, 12 , 1838 , Philadelphia , MALE.
Emmaline Bourquet is a dressmaker.

#664
Rachel Phillips , 63 , 1787 , Philadelphia
Clara Phillips , 22 , 1828 , Philadelphia
Evelyne Phillips , 20 , 1830 , Philadelphia

#665
Gustavus W.
I don't know where this come from, I just found it in my computer:

It's the image of 2 typed lines that read:

" Louis A Bourquin d April 22, 1845 age 38 years [verse]
" Eveline wife of Louis A Bourquin died March 13, 1878 "

Maybe what you have are the burial dates and these are the dates of their death?

[it looks like I clipped these 2 lines from a longer list of names ?]
----------------------------------------

<< The only children I ever found for Louis and Evalina is Louis Jr. and Grace. >>

who was Mary Bourquin ? she was 14 in 1860.

Even if b 1846 is correct, good chance she was a 2nd daughter, born after the death of her father.
-----------------------------
Sarah Bourquin:

could have be "a child out of wedlock" ...... maybe a child of Louis P Bourquin.

many possibilities:
he was young and did not want to marry right away.
Maybe Sarah's mother died and their daughter was then adopted.
Believing Louis died in the war, they did not change her last name.

That's may be why Louis did not come back to Philadelphia.

Wild guess only, but it matches with "Grace is her aunt and Evalina her grandmother".

good luck.

my last offer !!!

YES, they were brothers.

I have found 5 siblings [from the mormons] - the first 3 definitively in Phila.:

----------------------------------
Father: DAVID IMER BOURQUIN & Mother: SUSANNE MARCHAND

_ CHARLES FREDERIC BOURQUIN
Birth: 24 JUL 1805 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

_ LOUIS ADOLPHE BOURQUIN
Birth: 08 OCT 1806 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

_ FREDERIC BOURQUIN
Birth: 03 JUL 1808 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

_ MADELAINE BOURQUIN
Birth: 14 APR 1811 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

_ VICTOR FRANCOIS BOURQUIN
Birth: 14 APR 1811 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland
--------------------------------
and

Father: BENEDICT BOURQUIN & Mother: LYDIE HOURIET

LYDIE BOURQUIN Pedigree
Birth: 13 MAR 1775 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland
Death: 25 AUG 1832

DAVID IMER BOURQUIN
Birth: 30 JUL 1777 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

FREDERIC LOUIS BOURQUIN Pedigree
Birth: 06 AUG 1780 Villeret, Bern, Switzerland

--------------------------------

You had a very, very bad start that threw me off:

<< Northumberland 1830 (I believe that is in northern England) >>

that would make a lot more sense to be: Northumberland County in PA.

It seems to be more logical that Louis came to the States ca 1817, not <1830-1837>

let's try to follow their moves:

_ the family came to Bucks county, PA - ca 1817.

[ a David Buckhart in the 1830 Northumberland, PA census could be their father. ]

_in NY - ca 1829-30:
Gordon [Charles' son] born ca 1829
Gordon [Frederick's son] born ca 1840

they don't leave NY together:
_ Louis Adolphe went to Philadelphia first : Louis Philip born 13 Sep 1837 PA

_ Margaret [Charles'] & Catharine [Frederick's] born in PA, ca 1843

I had always been interested in these Philadelphia/Camden Bourquin, even though they cannot be related to my family [who were from the Canton of Neuchatel], and I will go on study them some more.
<< If they are related to your Louis Adolphe, they came several years before him. >>

why I now think that they are not related.

<< Louis Adolphe Bourquin b 1807 in Switzerland >>

I just found this:

" Born in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland, during 1808, Frederick Bourquin immigrated to the United States in 1817.

He initially settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, but soon relocated to New York City. "

assuming this article is correct, this means that:
Frederick and Charles Bourquin [that I assumed were brothers], did not come alone at about age 10.
so, they came with at least an adult - most certainly their father.

looks unlikely that another child, Louis, about 10, stayed in Switzerland.

Of course, this is only a guess on my part.

-----------------------------------------
source of bio above:

http://micklestreet.rutgers.edu/archives/Issue%2014/features...

a project of the Walt Whitman Program in American Studies at Rutgers University in Camden.
