Hi Les
Jocelyn here. I hope you are still on this email as its been 14 years since this last one. Boy time goes fast. Don and I are about to venture to Europe and UK. Don has a two week course at Ross-on-Wye beginning of June so I will be wondering South England. I am meeting up with a cousin from Catherine Boulton's (Christopher's sister) ancestry along the way and am only a couple of hours from Sommerford Keynes. Any hints on where to go while there would be really helpful. It looks an interesting part of the world and I will be in my element with all the castle ruins and I would like to go into Wales. Isn't that where Nana's brother Thomas lived. Perhaps there are living rellys there. I have also traced Mums family in Denmark so am going to visit them as well.
Love to hear from you jocelyn.gutsell@promed.ac.nz
Jocelyn

My William had a few brothers and I haven't figured out what ones left England. My husband's Grandfather William Boulton was born in Walsall Staffordshire England. He left in 1907 and came to British Columbia Canada with first wife. Hope this will help to see if their is a connection to our family's
Cheers Valerie

My grandfather, Joseph Boulton was born in Rochdate in 1901 but the father Arthur Cornelius died when he was a child and the mother (Emily Harling Boulton) remarried and they all left for America in 1904 or so.

Wow!! isn't this amazing??? I think I would have responded because we have Joel Boulton who was a partner of James Watt in our family. So the Watt forename would have caught my eye. I don't have any Oxford Boulton's - more Reading Berkshire. But do have the connection to James Watt.

Jenni,
Yes, we have connections!
My great-grandmother was Ida May Boulton, a sister of Annie Matilda Boulton. Born in Hartley, New South Wales, Australia in 1864 to William Boulton and Mary Ann Fry. Ida May married Alfred Ryder on 3 Mar 1890 in New York City and had 4 children. Ida May & Alfred Ryder had a son, Robert James Ryder, in 1892, my grandfather. Ancestry.com is reporting three other siblings: Edith Ryder; Fredrick Ryder and Julia Ryder. I was only aware of "Uncle Fred" who I think lived in Wisconsin, USA (I don't recall whether he was married). Ida May and Alfred Ryder were only married for 10 years when Alfred died of Tuberculosis.
Ida May married George Gammon. She passed away on 1930 in Chicago, USA.

Robert James Ryder was born in New York, USA in 1892 to Alfred Ryder and Ida May Boulton. Robert James married Lillian Newbern, and had 3 children. Robert passed away in 1973 in Ormond Beach, Florida. They had a son Robert Jr, who died in childbirth in 1923. Lillian told my sister about a daughter, Alice, who was apparently poisoned from household medicines or chemicals, but Ancestry.com doesn't identify an Alice, only a Barbara(not sure). Robert James Ryder and Lillian Newbern had a son Jim Ryder. Jim did about a year of service in Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1945 repatriating US Army infantrymen returning from Europe. He practiced as a Patent Attorney in New York City after studying Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and leaving Engineering for Harvard Law School. He married Neria Kohl in 1949 (I think) and they had five children, Neria-'52, Duncan-'54, Kristin-'56, Evan-'57(that's me) and Malcolm-'62. They separated in '76 and I think that they divorced in the 80's (not sure). In our children's generation there are eleven kids from 12 to 30 years old.

Derivation of middle names of Littlejohn and Napier in the Boulton Family

Six of the 9 children of my 3rd G-grandparents, Benjamin Dawson Boulton (~1811-1845) and Jane Cross (1809-1871), had middle names, which I think may have been significant:
- Henry Littlejohn Boulton (1832-1898), my 2nd G-grandfather;
- Jane Catherine Dawson Boulton (1835-1899);
- Benjamin Dawson Boulton (1838-1839);
- John Dawson Boulton (1839-1879);
- Charles Napier Boulton (1841-1914);
- William Napier Boulton (1845-1870).
Dawson was the maiden name of their paternal grandmother (Benjamin Boulton, Sr’s mother), but I have no idea where the middle names of Littlejohn and Napier originated from.

Littlejohn appears again as in John Dawson Boulton’s grandson, Leonard Littlejohn Boulton (1904-1963) and Napier as William Napier Boulton’s son, Charles Napier Boulton (1869-1951) and as George Napier Boulton (1890-1974), who was Benjamin Littlejohn Boulton’s grandson. Benjamin Littlejohn Boulton also had a son named Charles N. Boulton (1868-1932), so there is the potential that Napier was his middle name too.

Many other branches of the Boulton family used maiden names as future middle names (e.g., Hellam, Cornwall, Hesketh), so my suspicion is that Littlejohn and Napier may be maiden names of other branches I don’t know anything about. Benjamin Dawson Boulton was born and brought up in Whitchurch, Shropshire and several of his siblings remained there (with variable name spellings of Bolton and Boulton). Benjamin Dawson Boulton and Jane Cross raised their family in Liverpool. Although Henry Littlejohn Boulton was brought up in Liverpool, after his marriage to Alice Cornwall Hellam, they moved to Newport and Chepstow, Monmouthshire (where most of their children were born) and Gloucester, although moved back to Liverpool.

I’ve found a Napier R Boulton (~1887-1960, born Wiltshire and brought up in Pontypridd, son of Robert Boulton, born Gloucester), a Montague Napier M Boulton (born 1901 Monmouthshire, who emigrated to Canada and then the US with his Aunt and Uncle), and a Francis Napier Boulton (1919-1984, who lived in Victoria, Australia and was the son of William Charles Boulton), but haven’t found any links between them and “my” Boultons.

Does anyone have any ideas about the middle names of Napier and Littlejohn associated with the Boulton family?

Thanks, Sue.

I received the death record for Rebecca Boulton GRO 1909 Vol 7a, Page 110, Barrow Upon Soar. It was as I suspected. It is in fact the death record of Rebecca Boulter, widow of William Boulter. Rebecca's maiden name was Topley and the person present at her death was her nephew Edward Topley. In the 1901 census she was living in Thrussington with her brother William and nephew Edward.

I am tracing back my family tree and my Great grandmother was called Muriel Boulton. She was born in Queensville Stafford 1883. Her parents were John boulton and Margaret Emma Boulton (nee Machin). She had a sister called Hylda and a brother called Ernest. Ernest was a banjo player at some point. She went on to meet my Greatgrand father William Swift Who we have no idea about. He has proven to be an mysterious character.
Does anyone know anymore on this family? It would be grate to put the history together as there are so many missing links that it is proving sooooooo difficult.
Many thanks
Liz xx
