Hi Jim,
I found your post interesting since my grandfather was from Ottumwa and Hedrick, and married my grand mother in Jacksonville, IA. His name was Harry Bottorff married to Elsie Ingle. They have four children and many grandchildren, as well as great grands too!
My family is currently in Ohio well!

Cristi (Bottorff) (Cawrse) Barbish
Mentor, OH

I know its a decade later but... yes Dennis it appears we are cousins. I am also in contact with a cousin of yours too, who is a decedent of Robert Bottorff, a half brother of Mary and Chester who also says they had the same sort of disconnect with their relations.

If you read this again, please reply, would love to better tie us altogether.

my best
-Ray Bottorff Jr

Allan, here is some more I posted elsewhere confirming in my eyes my George W to your Nicholas....

George W Bottorff's parents were Nicholas and Elizabeth Bottorff listed in the 1850 census in Washington County, Indiana.

I got to this by deduction. I looked up every single George Bottorff (and every possible spelling variation including Pottorff, Buttorff, Bartof, et al) born in Indiana in the 1820s and 1830s.

Now George shows up in the 1860 through 1880 censuses in Jackson County, Indiana, so I need to find a George Bottorff in the 1850 census who I cannot trace elsehwere.

So I have traced about 10 George Bottorffs in the 1850 census. Every one of them can be found in later census, either in the same place or with other family members as listed with them in 1850 census.

Except George W of Washington County. He is there in 1850 and no longer in 1860 as Nicholas and the rest of the family continue up to 1870 in the same household.

The ages match, no other George fits, and one other thing. George's older brother Martin also disappears after the 1850 census for Nicholas in Washington County. One page previous on the same Jackson County 1860 census, living only a few farms away from George and Sallie and Sallie's family, is one Martin Bottorff (spelled in 1870 like George and Sallie as Bartof).

Martin with a new bride and toddler, is the same age as the Martin listed in 1850 as Washington County with Nicholas. Coincidence? Two brothers, show up in 1850 census in one county with their parents, then people with same ages and names show up in a neighboring county in 1860 (and not listed in that same county in 1850) as young married men, it has to be them. Coincidence here is unlikely.

So unless there is paper evidence that overrides this deduction, I am fairly certain the link is there and following though Ncholas and his father Martin, George W is linked to all the other early Bottorff/Badtorf immigrants (and cousin Pottorff's as well).

My third great grandmother was a Botoroff her name was Sirene who married a James H Weir in Clark County, Indiana. Her father was Lewis Francis Bottorff who was married to a Mary C. Congleton. His parents were supposedly Henry anc Catherine. I am also interested in tracing this lineage down along with several other lineages I have traced down to Clark Co, Indiana.

Belinda,

It has been 10 years since you posted this, but I have some of the info you are looking for.

George W, maybe the George W of Nicholas Bottorff in Washington County, Indiana (see 1850 census).

George W (W is for Washington) married Sallie (aka Sarah Jane) on 4 Sep 1856. Sallie is the daughter of John and Jane Bottorff and moved in next door to them in Clearspring, Owen Twp, Jackson County, Indiana, USA.

They had two children, Sarah Isabel and Serelda Jane, both of whom appear to be deceased by the 1870 census.

Nancy Adaline b 16 Jan 1864 Jackson County d 23 Jan 1949 Clearspring married Henry J Fish
Margaret E b Apr 1864 Owen Twp, d 1957 Jackson County no known marriages
Mary Ann b 12 May 1867 Jackson County, unknown death date, married Hugh Fish
Amanda E b Aug 1869 Owen Twp, unknown death date, married Andrew J Norman
John Martin (listed as John W in 1880 census) b 6 Sep 1874 Clearspring, d 17 Apr 1963 Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana.
Since this was posted 7 years ago, it is unlikely you will see this Allan, but let me post my thoughts.

I am getting more and more convinced that Nicholas' George W is the George W that is married to Sallie (Sarah Jane) Bottorff, dtr of John and Jane in Owen Twp, Jackson County, Indiana. They are together for the first time in the 1860 census.

They had 7 children, first two did not make it to the 1870 census, John Martin, the young son born 1874 (listed as John W in 1880 census born 1871) begat Walter Edgar who begat Ray Sheldon who begat me. lol

If you get this, contact me and I will share with you what I have. email CArchivist@yahoo.com

my best
Ray Bottorff Jr

Apparently, Sarah was not surnamed Hockenberry. the helpful genealogists at the Mifflin Historical have discovered that their son John reported on a marriage license and in his obituray that Sarah's maiden name was Martin and both she and Michael were born in Centre County though they spent their married life and died in Mifflin.

Can anyone shed light on the Martins from whom she descended?
If you are still interested, I would be happy to share my results. I am a Bodtorf, though one of my grandfather's changed our name to this from Bottorff so I would guess that the results should be similar. My kit was from the national geographic genographic project, so the results are a little generic. I did find one Batdorf on the Internet whose results were very similar. It would appear that the Bottorff's and Bodtorf's line can be traced back to the Batdorfs. Let me know.

Karl R. Bodtorf, Psy.D.

William Franklin BOTTORFF on Christmas of 1856; they had eight children, the eldest of whom was Allie who married John BOTTORFF. I descend through Nancy Agnes LAWSON's father, Hugh M. LAWSON and her brother, Joseph. I am hoping a BOTTORFF historian might have some tidbits of information to share with me. The LAWSON and BOTTORFF families were closely allied and many are buried at Rayburn Cemetery near Hedrick (Nancy Agnes d. 1922 and William Franklin in 1926). I'd be glad for the smallest bit of information.

This is an old post so you probably found your information long ago but just in case:

Centre Furnace is in Centre County, PA not Blair County.

William Lytle Bottorff appears to be the son of Jacob and Sarah Bottorf (one f)of Harris Township, Centre County, PA.

The 1860 Census (Harris Township) has Willliam Bottorff listed as Lytle Bottorf and the previous census of 1850 (Harris Township) has him listed as William Boterf.

Linn's History of Centre and Clinton Counties has William L. Bottorff of Co. G., 148th PA Vol. listed as being from Harris Township, Centre County.

William's parents Jacob S. Bottorf 12 Oct 1809 - 13 Oct 1886 and his mother Sarah Bottorf 15 May 1816 - 12 Apr 1892 are both buried in Spring Creek Cemetery, College Township, Centre County, PA. There are quite a few Lytle's buried in this Cemetery. Sarah's maiden name might have been Lytle.

Bottorff / Buttorf / Batdorf / Bottoff / etc. in Missouri in the 1850-1900s

I am seeking information about one of my 3rd great grandfathers George Bottorff, his first wife, and their many children. He was born about 1800 in Kentucky and then moved with his family across the Ohio river to Clark County Indiana. He died in Missouri in 1883. I am seeking any information also about his first wife, my 3rd great grandmother, Lucy Ann STACY, born about 1804 in Indiana and died in Phelps Co in 1865. I believe George’s father was John Heinrich Bottorff who was a revolutionary soldier born in Pennsylvania born in1754 and was married to Sophi Fricker. Confirmation of this also appreciated.
George and Lucy Ann lived in Crawford county in the 1850 census. Then in Phelps County in the 1860 and 1870 censuses (In 1870 George had remarried a lady name Jane, surname unknown). In the 1880 census he was living with one of his married daughters Martha Mounts back in Crawford County. I would like to know the name and location of the where he is buried and the date of his death. Same for his first wife. I understand they were married on January 18th in Clark County, Indiana. I would like to know the location of any property he owned and any other information about him or his children. Note please: The name Bottorff has been spelled differently in many records such as: Bottoff, Buttoff, Battoff, Battdorf, Bardorff, Pottoff, Burttoff, Bartdorf, and so forth, etc. – all with any combination of one or two t’s and f’s by the way.
Thank you very much. There are several Elizabeths in the index, but only one Betsy and she was born in KY in April 1795. Her parents were John Henrich/Henry and Sophia (Fricker/Freiker) Bottorff. He was born 17 Oct. 1754 near Harrisburg, Berks County, PA. He m. 23 July 1776 in Lancaster Co., PA. Sophia was b. in Apr. 1753 in Germany, the daughter of Andreas/Andrew and Maria Magdalena (_____) Fricker. The family moved to Clark County, Indiana in 1790, and two years later they settled in Jefferson County, KY. It is probably here that Betsy was born, the 7th of 9 children. John Henry died 10 May 1806 at his home in Jefferson Co., KY, about 10 miles from Louisville. Sophia died at Betsy's home in Jefferson County on 21 July 1846. Sophia was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Clark Co., OH. I do not have any information on who Betsy married, however. If this is your Betsy, I have more information on John Henry and Sophia and on the Batdorf/Bottorff Family going back three more generations."

Bottorff Family of Jackson Co., Indiana

I am looking for any information concerning William and Lucinda Bottorff of Carr Township, Jackson County, Indiana. William Bottorff and Lucinda Harris/Harrison (born 1847) were married in Washington County, Ind., on January 3, 1864. (There is another William and Lucinda Bottorff living in Washington County during the same time period, but that Lucinda was a Stanley born in 1843.) In the 1880 U.S. Census, William, 40, and Lucinda 33, are listed along with children Mary E., 14, Susan A., 13, Virginia E., 11, George W., 6, Martha E., 4, Lucinda's widowed mother, Mary House, 46, and Lucinda's widowed sister, Susan H. House, 23. A Lucinda Bottorff married James H. Peyton or Payton in Clark County July 13, 1886, but I have no record of William's death or the Bottorffs' divorce. My chief interest is in Lucinda's history and any documents relating to her-- I am working on an academic research project focusing on Lucinda's sister, Nancy Ann, and I want to exhaust all possible sources of information. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with material on this family. Thank you.

Re: Parents of David Bottorff (1806-1887)

Hi Jim,
Thank you for the heads up, I have bookmarked this site because it may become useful in the future. Unfortunately I cannot find a David in the correct generation, I will study the site more this evening. What I do know is that the marriage between David Bottorff and Mary Burns was in approximately 1828 in either Miami or Champaign County OH. In the 1820 census I found a David Potorf in Jackson Twp, Miami Co (Jackson is in Champaign so there is some kind of mistake) and there are sons that are the correct age for David. In the 1830 census David Potraff is living next door to a Samuel Burns which matches the name of one of Mary's brothers in Newberry Twp Miami Co Ohio. There are other Burn/Burns matching names that I know to be Mary's father and brothers. I found a Henry Patorf in Jackson Twp Champaign Co, and in 1840 a number of Batdorf in Jackson Twp. What I suspect happened is David moved west into Northern Indiana with Mary's family and left his family behind. I have the suspicion that the Bottorffs/Batdorf down in southern Indiana around Louisville Kentucky in Clarke county are related to a brother of David's that moved down there. Are you one of the Clarke County Bottorffs? Can you drop me an email at pharmakon5@gmail.com when you get a chance. Thank you for the help
Maria

Hi, I was hoping someone may know who the parents of David Bottorff are. He was born in 1806 in Pennsylvania and spent most of his like in Marshall County Indiana, where a lot of his descendants are still located. He and his wife Mary Burns are buried in the Union cemetery in Marshall County, however I don't believe the parents are. According to census reports they were both born in Maryland. It is very possible that I am getting close to where the name switches to Batdorf or some close variation. Any help would be very helpful.
Thanks Maria Fleming Bottorff

Looking for info on William Bottorff 1803-? William had four sons Michael 1828-1877 m. Sarah J. Hockenbury 1832-1880, Samuel, Jacob, David, and there may be more sibling I don't know.

Michael's daughter Rachel Bottorff Lonabaugh is my gr gr grandmother.

On the 1880 Census, they are all listed in Yeagertown, Mifflin Co., Pa and working at the Mann's Ax Company. William is living with son Samuel. Rachel's (Lawnbaugh) parents are dead and all her siblings are living with her. There is no husband listed. Her children Harry and Lottie (my gr grandmother) are listed as Lawnbaugh but the family bible uses the Bottorff name. Harry is buried in the Holy Communion Lutheran Cemetery as Lonabaugh. Most of the Bottorff are also buried there. I Can't find Rachel anywhere.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Looking for info on Bottorffs in Mifflin Co., Pa. My gr gr grandmother was Rachel Bottorff Lonabaugh 1850-1900. Her father was Michael Bottorff 1828-1877 m. to Sarah J. Hockenbury 1832-1880. Michael's father is William Bottorff 1803- ?. William has sons Michael, Samuel, Jacob, and David. There may be more siblings. The 1880 census lists all families are living in Yeagertown, Mifflin Co., Pa and working at the Mann's Ax Company. Also the 1880 census show William living with son Samuel and William's parents from Germany.

Any info on William would be a help. Also the family bible list Rachel's children Harry and Lottie as Bottorffs not Lonabaughs. But Harry is buried as Harry Lonabaugh at Holy Communion Lutheran Cemetery, Yeagertown, Pa with all of the Bottorffs.

Do you know when Frank was born? I have Lillard down as having a brother named Robert F Bottorff. People in that time era often used their middle name instead of the first name. "F" may have been Frank.

Lillard's parents are: Hamilton Bottorff, b. 1822 d. 09/18/1886. Mary J. (Unknown) b. 1829 d. 12/01/1862.
Thanks for replying. I do have quite a bit of Ingle/Jenkins info as they were Quakers and there is a lot available. My quiry is about finding info on Mary Daughterty who married John Bottorff (son of Henry and Mary Ingle Bottorff) Anyone having info on Mary Daugherty is of special interest to me since she is one of my long-time dead ends. Still hoping to make contact with anyone researching Ida, Millie, Daisy, and their brother George (my grandfather), children of John Bottorff and Mary Daugherty.
