A biography/family history of John F. Borough is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2. John's Holland-Dutch ancestors settled in Pennsylvania in Colonial time. His grandfather, Frederick, was born 1771, in Dauphin County, PA, and died in 1875, Monroe County, MI, age 104.
John F. Borough was born 20 May 1854, to Rev. J. & Susannah (Hetler) Borough, b. 1817, Shanandoah Valley, VA & 1835, Ohio, respectively. Rev. J. died Traverse City, MI, 1912, and Susannah died in Traverse City, 1902. They had 11 children.
John F. was educated in schools of Monroe County, MT, and State Normal School at Ypsilanti, MI; graduated from high school at Wauseon, OH. In 1881, Frank became a merchant and established a hardware business in Ovid, MI. On 24 Mar 1889, he arrived in Stevensville, MT, and for 23 years was president of Amos Buck Mercantile Company. He sold his business in 1912, and two years later entered the hardware business, Burough & Fulton. He owned a home in Stevensville and a 200-acre ranch 5 miles northwest of Stevensville. He held several political positions.
On 27 Sep 1877, Monroe County, MI, John married Miss Ada Bitting, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Buck) Bitting. Her parents lost their lives in the sinking of the Ironside in Lake Michigan.
Borough children: Claudius W. Borough, d. in 1907, age 20; Edna May (Mrs. Herbert Metcalf), b. 2 May 1884.
John F. Burough died 2 Oct 1932, age 78, Missoula County, MT.
Ada Borough died in 25 Mar 1940, Lane County, OR, & is buried in Maplewood Cemetery (MT) with her husband, John F., and son, Claudius.
