A CENTENARIAN
Frederick Boroughf, father of Rev. J. Boroughf, of Bedford, Monroe Co., Mi, finally closed his earthly career at the residence of his (above mentioned) son, on January 29th, 1875 at the advanced age of 104 years, 3 months, and 14 days. He was born in Jackson township, Lebanon Co. PA in 1770, where he resided until he was 22, and then removed to the state of Maryland. Here he remained but a few years, immigrating from this place to Virginia, where he resided for many years, and became the father of a large family of children. At the breaking of the war of 1812, he enlisted and served his country faithfully, in the capacity of a soldier, until the close of the war. From Virginia he came to West Salem, Ohio, and afterward live in Sandusky and Wyandot counties, Ohio, and in different places in Indiana. He celebrated his centennial birthday in South Bend. About this time the companion who shared with him, the joys and sorrows of life for 75 years, was removed by death. About 4 years ago he came to Monroe County, and spent his closing days with his son. He was a good citizen and a firm believer in the Christian religion, having been a member of the Evangelical Church from youth. His progeny has become quite numerous, there being 12 children (nine of whom are still living), 92 grand-children, 67 great grand-children, and some of the latter are married.
His funeral services took place in the presences of a large concourse of people, the writer preaching from the words, "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like this." S. Copley
It will be remembered that Mr. Boroughf was present, in Monroe, at the reunion of veterans of 1812, held here on the 4th of July, 1873, and he then being nearly 103 years old, and the oldest veteran present. He was then quite smart - his intellect clear and his memory goo. We understand that he remained in much the same condition to a short time before his death.
