Re: Bonecutter name

I am researching a Bonecutter line that includes a Christopher Bonecutter but he doesn't tie into the Bonecutters I see in your thread. He was born in Ohio about 1816 and was married to Charlotte Hefley. Their children as far as I can determine were Mary E. (1840), William (1841), Sarah and Leah - twins? - (1844), John (1 Jun 1846), Lydia (1854), Sidney (1848), Susan and Lucinda - twins? - (1849), Jesse (1852) and Pheber (1856) all born in Ohio. The line for which I'm interested goes on down through John who m. Rebecca Delilah Manville 16 Feb 1879 d/o George W. Manville and Mary Ann Rogers. I would appreciate any help you can give me. I am actually working on this family because my daughter is married to Brett Bonecutter so am searching for his family information for my grandchildren. I see that some people have listed Martin Bonecutter (b. 1775) and Elizabeth Loy (b. 1792) as Christopher's parents.

Check out www.wvculture.org, click ARCHIVES & HISTORY, at the right hand side of screen you will see a title: "Latest News", click: VITAL RESEARCH RECORDS, then click DEATH.

Certainly you should post anything you find out.

I am the GGG grandson of Levin and Sarah Ann (Bonecutter) McFarland. Sarah Bonecutter was born ca. 1775 probably in Frederick County, VA, died after 1850. I do not yet know her father.

As I indicated earlier, I think that all the Bonecutters should assume they are related, the name being so rare. I am in contact, directly or indirectly, with other bonecutter researchers, we should try to share our finds to establish the connection.

Sarah's father is reported in one biography of a grandson to have fought in the Revolutionary War - I will be checking for any Bonecutter records at the archives this week, will let you know if I find anything.

There was an Alice J. Bonecutter who married William F. Allen in Adams County, Ohio. They obtained their marriage license in October of 1877. I also posted a Martin Bonecutter (b. abt. 1789) who married Betsey Whaley elsewhere, they were also married in Adams County. I am not a direct descendant, I just have some of the family names in my tree as very minor offshoots :)

There was a Martin Bonecutter who married Betsey Whaley on Jan. 5, 1810, by Rev. Jos. Moore. This was in Adams County, Ohio. I read somewhere that there was another Martin Bonecutter. Perhaps if you compared the ages, it would help you to narrow down the correct Martin. Also, many of the Bonecutters moved just north of Adams County into Highland & Clinton counties. Happy Hunting!

They're all from the Clinton County, Ohio area and I believe many are still in the area. I thought this might help with your theories on how the name has changed.

I stand by my comment, but with correction. The Bonecutters in West Virginia have their roots in Gallia, Ohio. The last of the living Buncutters left in Va obviously spell their name differently. All the Bonecutters, Boncutters, and Buncutters can trace their roots to one man--John Harmon Bonecutter. I should have wrote that anyone currently with the last name Bonecutter can trace his or her roots back to Ohio.Glad to get your response. Two Buncutters also lived in Ohio for a while.

No, the book I got this info from only lists the article as it appeared in the newspaper. The only info you can get from this is that George Bonecutter was in southern Ohio in 1816 (or, that some one believed him to be there and that is why they sent him a letter to that Post Office).

I am looking for any info on the Richard Bonecutter/ Cynthia Steed side. I have been researching this forever but every time I think I have something I can't find anything to prove it. I believe they had 8 children. George was richards father who was married to a Jane Madden. Any info on Jane Madden would be really greatly appreciated.

Re: Knochenhauer-Bonecutter

Carole,

From research I have done on the Internet, I learned that "Knochenhauer" is a very old, northern German name for a butcher. The German verb, "hauen" means "to hack, cut, hew," and is related to the English word "hew." "Knochen" is in the possessive (genative case), therefore, meaning "of bones." Put together, "Knochenhauer" means "cutter of bones."

Some Knochenhauers in the U.S. have changed the spelling to Knockenhauer.

The Knochenhauer guild was one of the earliest guilds to form during the middle ages. There is a restoration of a very ornate Knochenhauer Guild House (Amtshaus) in Hildesheim, Germany, that, I gather, is a famous regional tourist attraction. (I would love to see it some day, if and when I can afford to travel over there.) You can find info about it several places on the Internet.

Because "Knochenhauer" was the name of a profession (just like Miller, Baker, Smith, etc., in English), there must be several separate "Knochenhauer" families. Just because some is named Knochenhauer does not mean that they are related to our Hermann. Us Bonecutters would like to try to connect with a Knochenhauer in Germany who is interested in genealogy to try to track our Hermann/Harmon, the Hessian mercenary, from the other side of the Atlantic. Any ideas?

By the way, you seem to know already that Knochenhauer, translated, means bone chopper, suggesting looooong ago a butcher was in the family. My grandfather's brother was named Herman, first name; which may have just been a common first name at the time, or could have been a family namesake. Here are some first names our branch long ago chose: Joseph, Adolph, Florian, Stanley, Wilhelm, Heinrich, Hugo, Herman, Ewald, Gustav, Oscar.

My grandfather and his parents and forebearers came from Lich, in Hessia, near Frankfort. They came over in 1901. Years ago some cousins visited Germany and found a statue to some Knochenhauer in that town as well as a Knochenhauer House, historic site. They had to leave and did not investigate. That is all I know but I'd like to investigate more some day as I am researching too. I do remember my grandfather saying that when he was a young man in the navy @ 1914 he would always check phone books in various US cities as he knew some kind of relation had come to America previously and been lost to them. My great grandfather was a millwright with the Trans Siberian Railroad ( in Prussia ) and his father and grandfather were millers. That makes sense as Lich is on the Main River. If you find more about Knochenhauers in Germany I would be grateful for news. Thanks. PS We live in the Buffalo NY area.

Carole,

My second cousin, Jerry Bonecutter, has done extensive research on the family name/family tree. He has reason to believe that all of us Bonecutters in the U.S. descend from a "Hermann Knochenhauer" who was a Hessian soldier fighting for the British during the Revolutionary War. Jerry believes that Hermann was captured, stayed after the war, and changed his name to Harmon, Harman, or John Harmon Bonecutter. We have been trying to trace Hermann to a specific location in Germany, but without success. All we know from military records is that it is likely that he came from the area then known as "Hesse-Kassel." Any help you could supply connecting us to Knochenhauers in Germany to try to trace Hermann's whereabouts in the 1770s before coming to the U.S. would be greatly appreciated.

Am very interested. My mother was a Knochenhauer, translation Bonecutter in German. My great grandfather, Adolph Knochenhauer came with his family from Prussia, actually originally from Lich, Hessia which was part of Prussia in 1901. I understand from relatives there's a statue and house in that town commemorating a famous Knochenhauer. We are from Buffalo, NY.Any info or ties?

Tina,

I am also a descendant of Christopher Buncutter. He was born in 1788 the son of John Harmon Bonecutter. Christopher had 7 possibly 8 children as they are not sure about George, born 1824. He may be the son of another brother.

His children were: John b. 1813
Hannah b. 1820
William b. 1823
Catherine Ann b. 1829
James b. 1830
Martin b. 1831
Samuel b. 1833
I am descended from James H Buncutter b. 1830 d. 15 Sep 1855 in Champaign Co Ohio. My grandma was Dorothy Bonecutter Howard, daughter of Gilbert and Missouri Bonecutter. Grandma had 7 brothers and sisters, and my great grandpa had alot of brothers and sisters. Have we by any chance met at the family reunion in Butler? I think I know your Dad and I do know your Grandpa. My Bonecutters came to Indiana from Putnam County, Ohio and moved around quite a bit before settling in Waterloo, Indiana. Now we are scattered all over.
