So far I have found: birth (~1881), date of arrival (1899), date of marriage to Katyryna/Katerina (Jan. 23, 1903), patent grant to 6-1-9E (Arbakka, Manitoba), death in 1921 at age 41.

Also looking for information on his wife, Kateryna, born 1887, arrived 1902.

Hi there

I found out, that BODNARIUK means the same as "Böttcher", Boettcher, Bottmer etc, which are relatively frequent names in Germany.

The "boettcher" is a craftsman who produces TUBs or VATs. I think the english translation must be "TUBBER" or "COOPER".

So you could have changed your name into "cooper" as well :-)

Kind regards from Germany -N.Koneczny-

Dear Shelley

Even when people moved from one country close by, like from Poland to Germany they had to change their names. For example there are many "Koneczny´s" in Austria that named themselves "Konetschnie".
Hi again!

I was told the reason why my Grand Father changed his last name was because no one could pronouce it properly and he made it easier.

My Grand mother has kept all the obituaries of our deceased family and therefore that is how I know for sure that our last name was (at least I believe) "Bodnaruk".

I have no idea what the surname means... could you share that with me?

Thanks,
Shelley

Dear Shelley

Changing, dropping or adding letters of surnames can have different reasons. Especially when people move from one country (here Ukraine) to another (here Romania (today)).

Some letters even do not exsist in the other countries writing. I´m not sure if they used kyrilian letters these days.

I think it´s a pity that you changed your surname. Did you know what "Bodnariuk" or "Bodnaruk" means? I think i Do.

Kind regards from Germany -n. koneczny-

Hi N. Koneczny

i have a quick question for you. Why is it that Michail Bodnaruk and his children had different last names? ie. Bodnariuk ?? Is that a typing mistake or did it change?

My family is from Canada and have since changed our surname is shorten it to Budd. However it was known that we previously went by Bodnaruk.

I'm just doing a bit of research to perhaps find out more. Our family came from Ukraine.

Thanks and good luck!
Shelley

Hello over there ...

I´m N. Koneczny from Germany. My fathers family had to leave Radautz, Bukowina (today Romania) during the 2nd Worldwar. Some relatives still live there. His mother was Michaline Bodnariuk, born 1906 in Chernovitz.

I have published a piece of our family-tree at

http://www.ju-ko.de/koneczny/ancestors/gtp3.htm

I´m still looking for more informations about the Bodnariuk-Branch from Chernowitz.

Anyone can help?
I am posting a new message as since the last message is outdated, as I have found out more since it was posted. My grandmother Doris Bondaruk and my grandfather John Nagacz came from a village in Russia. The name of the village was Czechowka or Czisowka maybe Chyzowka. It was spelled many ways on the manifest lists of different family members. The village near there I believe was Sholki, or Cholki.
I would love to find the location of the village that my grandmother came from. If I can locate it maybe I can find some of the family left in the Ukraine. Please write if you know of the village. Thanks!

Wow! I just read your post and rembered something that my dad had written in his autobiography. My dad is 83 years old. His mom died in 1937. Her name was Midora and she was married to Wasyl Bodnaruk
Here are my dad's words
"Dad knew a widow from his hometown (in the old country) that lived in Saskatchewan (farm) with several kids. Soon after mom's death he brought that woman and her kids out to our place - 2 sons and a daughter older than me and twins - a boy and a girl about 5. I was very angry. .....Then our house burned down and I lost everything. We lived in the chicken house for awhile and then moved back into town and lived in an old Ukrainian hall. I slept in the basement on an old divan. Dad built a kind of restaurant in town, which this woman kind of managed. The two of them didn't get along and eventually dad just left".
Hope this helps,
Jan

Midora Bulechovsky was married to Alexander Lopaschuk and had 4 children - Carol, Perfiry, Bella and Frederick. After Alexander died, Midora married Wasyl and had 4 more children - Wasyl Jr., Elena (? - died at 1 month),
Mary and Jeannie. My grandparents lived in Drumheller most of their lives

dear L. winfield,

that is interesting indeed. well what i know of my grandfather is he was not born in the states so i know he was from the north somewhere not sure where. my mom told me my dad samuel bondaruk jr. was from alaska. she told me when i was very young he was mongolian. which they do look very native indeed. lately though my mom has forgotten a bit but she said there is a strong possibility my dad could have native in him. I will say that i have had enough people tell me i look native so this is where i get my conclusion. this is the reason why also i felt a connection with the robert bondaruk even though i dont know for sure if he is a relative or not. there was a charlotte bondaruk who passed up in the edmonton area. if you look up a charlotte ann bondaruk maybe some of her family members you would recognize their names. sincerely

Hello Everyone

I'm a fellow Bodnaruk and have also recently been looking into my family tree, too.

As to the meaning of the name:

Bodnaruk can be broken into two parts
Bodnar + uk

Bodnar (or sometimes Bondar, especially in Eastern parts of Ukraine) is roughly translated into English as Cooper, or sometimes Hooper (he who makes the hoops that fit around the barrel to keep its form). Often the Cooper would make not just the hoops but the barrel itself, as well, so I like to call Bodnar - "the barrel maker."

In Ukrainian, the ending -uk means "the son of"

So the whole name Bodnaruk is essentially the "son of the barrel-maker"

I look forward to hearing from other Bodnaruk.

Borys Bodnaruk

I'm just beginning the research on my family, so I don't have much. I'm looking for information on my great grandparents, Theodore and Victoria Bodnariuk.

I know that Theodore was called Thaddeus originally, but changed to Theodore when he came to Canada in the early 1900s. He was Romanian; I was told he came from what was then Austria, but is now Romania. The names I have for his parents are Ivan Bodnariuk and Elena Slusar. I do not know if he had any siblings.

Victoria's maiden name was Mundru, and she came from the Bukovina region in the late 1910s, early 1920s. Her parents are Nicoli Mundru and Amelia. I know her mother died and her father remarried; I do not know if Amelia is her mother or step-mother.

They lived in the Greater-Hamilton area in Ontario, Canada.

If anyone has any similar information, and think they might have a sibling or cousin from this family tree, please let me know! This is as far back as I can trace this line, and I'd like as much information as I can get!

I am searching for information on my grandmother Pearl Kuresh Bodnaruk. Bodnaruk is her surname from a second marriage. She is buried in Drumheller and that's how I found the name Bodnaruk. She had 6 children in her first marriage to John Kuresh who died before she gave birth to twins. They are John, Bill, Ann, Helen, and twins Jack(Harry), and Dorothy. When she married Bodnaruk she had the twins with her and I believe Bodnaruk was a widow and brought children to the marriage as well. I don't know if there was any children from that marriage or not.She ran a store of some kind and a boarding house in Rosedale during the depression. She died in Aug of 1956 and the name Bodnaruk is on her head stone. She is a mystery to me and I would appreciate any information someone might have.
Thanks
L. Winfield

My grandmother Pearl Kuresh Bodnaruk (see thread) was either married to or living with a man named Bodnaruk before she died. I assumed they were married because his name is on her headstone. All I know about him is that his nickname was Chief. What do you think? Do you know much else about your father or if your grandfather was native?

The reason why I'm writing to is because I'm interested in my origins and thought that you might be a relative of mine.
All I know is that my grandfather, Demetrio Bodnariuk, was born in a little village known as Hotin, Vascauti, Rumania eighty years ago.

If you think that we may be related to each other, please contact me.

Natali
Hi! I feel terrible that I haven't been back to this site for so long.
Did I ever answer your question about my grandpa Wasyl Bodnaruk being married to Pearl Kuresh. I thought I had but can't find my comments. I think he was only called Chief as in BOSS!!!
My dad, is now 88 years old, and doing well. I haven't gotten any farther on his side.

Jan

Hi Shelley - Wow, that's interesting that you changed your name from Bodnaruk to Budd!
My father is William Bodnaruk born 1920 in Drumheller.
His mother,Midora (nee Bulechowsky) had a sister Mary Anastasia who married a Peter Rawlusyk and a brother, Alexander(Sandie) who married Katarina Huzio.
Midora was first married to a Lopaschuk.

That would be nice if we were connected.

Jan Petersen

Hi! I think Victoria had a grandson named George? If she did please let me know! I am trying to trace back family members. All I know is my family came through Canada and they passes away in California. Also I researched the name Bodnaruk and its not as common as I thought it was in Romania. If you have any other info let me know!

My Grandmothers maiden name was Bodnaruk or Bondaruk and she origanally came from the Ukraine to the United States just before the revolution. I would love to find the family of my Grandmother. Her first name was Doris or Dasha.
