I made significant changes to Asa Bly's page last night after reading the balance of the documents. Asa of NY was not the same man as Asa of New Bedford. However However they were father and son. They did die about the same time. The definitive document discussed the conflict of interests between Isaac Cory, administrator of Captain Asa Bly's estate and guardianship of his children, and Theron Bly, administrator of his father's estate, Asa Bly of New York.
It spells out that the children of deceased Captain Asa Bly of Westport, MA, (Christopher, Leander and Deborah) were to receive his portion the inheritance from Asa Bly of Burlington, NY. But they disagreed as to amount and expenses.
Two more letters further clarify the relationships. One from Theron to Asa, attempting to locate him, indicates Theron did not know he had a brother until his father's deathbed revelation. A second letter from the Postmaster of Burlington, stated Asa Bly of that town, deceased had a son, possibly going by the name Tripp in the town of Westport (New Bedford). This indicates they were searching for Asa under both his name Bly, and his alias Tripp.
Further letters show Captain Bly travel south to Richmond Virginia and on to the West Indies, and north up the coast to New Hampshire, New York, Halifax and to Amsterdam, Ghent, and London during the war of 1812.
