My gg grandmother Olive Rasey had a child in 1860-63 . His name was Frank and his fathers name was Frank Blakeslee/ Blakesley . I don't believe they married and shortly after Olive married a man named Mudge. The boy took on the Mudge surname , married , had children with the Mudge name but those kids are actually Blakeslee kids. Only Franks death certificate revealed this info. Anyone with more info ???? thanks.

Hi Vickie - I do have this picture and would be very happy to send it to you! I don't keep track of what I pay for these rescued pictures (although I probably should!) and the postage is usually minimal. My reward is the satisfaction of returning photos to interested family researchers. "Pay it forward" if you will. So sometime, please do a kind act for another researcher.

Since this is a public forum, please contact me through me email to exchange information on getting this photo to you. scrap4heritage@msn.com

Have a great day!

I just saw your message regarding the picture of Wilmot Blakeslee. In my recent family research, I have come to believe that Wilmot Blakeslee is my great grandfather. My grandfather was adopted and through years of sorting and searching I believe I have found his birth father, Wilmot Blakeslee. He lived in Iowa, but did a great deal of traveling to Missouri and Kansas. If the picture is still available I would gladly repay you for your purchase, postage, and any additional money you might require for your trouble.
Thank you so very much for "rescuing" the picture.
Best Regards,
Vickie McCubbin
Just discovered a son born in 1878 to Margaret Murray Blakeslee and an Unknown Blakeslee. The child's name is Clarence Blakeslee and he is living in Athens Township, Crawford County, PA in the 1880 census with his aunt Nancy Murry. Can anyone verify that his father was Walter Eugene Blakeslee? I find Walter living in 1880 with another Murray sibling, William D. Murray in McKean County, PA. Margaret and a 2nd child, recently born, died in 1879/1880 and can be found in the Mortality Census. I would also like to find what became of Clarence.
Thanks

The clothing is from that era. Of course, I also have 2 family photo albums without a single name on them except for a postcard photo of "Harriet".

I've been away from genealogy research for a few years because of my job and am now starting where I left off. I was in contact with someone (won't give name yet) from NJ who was kind enough to give her line. We both believe, from oral history by my g-aunt, that John, son of Jacob and Rachel, would be my mother's 2nd g-gf. Sadly, I could not tie them in before her passing, and believe the lady from NJ is also passed since I did not get an answer the last time I wrote her. No one had done any research on this John and his son George has been my brick wall.

Back in 1997, I wrote to the Blakeslee's still living in the area and never received a single answer. So sad that some do not want to correspond.

I would love to correspond with you. We probably have ancestors in common.

I do have new info on George and Rachel. George was born in White Haven, Luzerne Co. I can only find him married to Ida WEST and lived and died in Bradford Co. Some say this George's middle name was Washington. I have not been able to verify this.

According to my g-gf's (John Henry Blakeslee)SS application, WWI and WWII registrations, his parents were George William BLAKESLEE and Alice WATSON. I also found information on a Watson BLAKESLEE, who I think may be a brother of John since both were born in Dallas, Luzerne Co., PA in the years of 1872 and 1875. It would be so easy to find him in the census for 1880, but that has been impossible. I figure his mother died between 1875 and 1877 IF the George seen with Ida West is a second wife.

Rachel was born c. 1856 and married William O. MILLER. I am thinking, because of oral history from a g-aunt, that John Henry Blakeslee may have lived with this Rachel after his mother died. If I could find out William's middle name, I would be happy. John Henry Blakeslee did live with "Aunt Rae and Uncle Orr."

Does any of this correspond with your info?

Col. Don Blakeslee is my second cousin. He is the son of James Harold Blakeslee b. 1 Nov. 1897, grandson of James Albert Blakeslee b. 8 Mar. 1880, and great grandson of Charles Albert Blakeslee b. 7 Mar. 1854 - all three born in Erie Co., PA. I believe the Ohio pioneers referred to the family of Don's mother, Mary Hervey. Don's parents divorced when he was very young, and he never saw his father again. Please e-mail me if additional information is needed, or if you have information about James Harold Blakeslee.

Captain David Blakeslee mentioned in letters

On 4 June 1908 Lucy Blakeslee Cleese wrote the following in a letter to her parents, James Franklin Blakeslee and Elvira Victoria Bridges Blakeslee:

‘I had a letter from Mrs. Blakeslee and Della and will copy what she wrote about the Blakeslee family and send it to you. Della’s mother wrote This is what Della’s father’s first cousin wrote. She is a daughter of Uncle John Blakeslee whose last home was near Crystal Lake near Chicago. This cousin who wrote this much of the history is Mrs. Manchester. This is what she wrote to Mrs. Blakeslee.

‘Captain David Blakeslee was in the war of 1812. These are the names of his children: Ruben, David, Hiram, Jason, Jesse, Gersham, John, Ann, and Sally. Captain Blakeslee had two wives, and had one son by his first wife whose name was James, making him a half brother to the seven boys and two girls of the second wife. Reuben, David, Jason and Jesse and Gersham died in Penn, Ann in Vermont. Her husbands name was Brainer. She never came west. Uncle Jason’s wife was Janette, Uncle Jesse’s wife was Betsy, Uncle Gersham’s was Emeline, Uncle John’s was Nancy Ward. Her fathers name was McArthur, a Scotchman. Uncle Ruben’s wife’s name was Prudence and Hiram’s was Lenora. (I will add right here that Hiram and Lenore were my husband’s parents, Della’s Grand Parents, Mrs. Blakeslee.) The first Blakeslee known to arrive in America was an English orphan boy and had few friends, so he ran away, and managed to get aboard of a vessel for America. He hid himself in the hold and kept still and did not show himself until hunger and thirst drove him out. They could not sail back with him, and did not dare to throw him over board so he got to America. He made his way and married and we are his descendants. I for one am proud to know I am a decendant of such a plucky ancestor. It was just such men as he that made this country a republic. Mrs. Manchester.’

On 18 February 1912 Mrs. F.A. Gage, Box 303, Spartansburg, PA, wrote the following in a letter to her cousin, Daniel Blakeslee (brother of James Franklin Blakeslee):

‘O.P. Blakeslee has your grandpa’s commission papers.’

My questions are:

1. How accurate are these statements, and who is O.P. Blakeslee?
2. Do any of his descendants still have the commission papers?
3. Was Captain David Blakeslee in the War of 1812, or was he in the Revolutionary War, or both?
Thanks for looking, Sarah. My Blakeslees started in Connecticut also but they went west via NY, Illinois and most of the West except Iowa. With little doubt I have found that all of us are descended from Samuel Blakeslee in New Haven, CT ca 1640.

HI---
Please refer to my previous request on this board. I am interested to know if G.B.Blakeslee could be a descendant of my Great-Grandfather Gervase Blakeslee or his son Gervase, Jr. Both were born in Harpursville, NY. Jr. went west, first to Illinois, then I lost track of him, but he or one of descendants probably went further west. He was listed as a grocer in both NY and IL. Does any of this ring a bell? I would be interested to get some of your input in any case. gblakes442@aol.com. Thanks.

Ken,
If you haven't already found this, the Susquehanna County Historical Society in Montrose, PA has quite a lot of genealogy information, most of it compiled by Rev Garford Williams about 1950-1970. Because the four sons of Jonah Blakeslee (Benjamin, Zophar, Aaron, Lyman) had come from Wethersfield, VT to Springville, PA about 1800, Williams had compiled extensive information about their descendants. My line is through James I Blakeslee, one of Zophar's sons.
Norm Scarpulla

Last week, I found an old and somewhat unstable web site (ReoCities.com/Heartland/Ranch/7108/blakeslee) which has John (third son of Jacob Blakeslee and Rachel White) married (wife unknown) with three children: William (b.1852), George (b.1854) and Rachel (no birth date). George was married to Mary Watson and had one listed son, John Henry (b.1872), all in the Dallas, PA area. There seem to be some other information about George on another page but the site crashed. I have been unable to get back on the site. Maybe you might have better luck.

Re: George BLAKESLEE/Mary Watson-PA

I went to an old site that hasn't been updated in years and found George Blakeslee married to Mary Watson with a John Henry Blakeslee as a son. George was born in 1854 in Dallas, PA and was the son of John Blakeslee (1825-1866, wife unknown). George had 2 siblings, William (b. 1852) and Rachel, John was the third son of Jacob Blakeslee (1780-1853)and Rachel White (1790-1854), my ggg grandparents. Hope this finally puts the search to an end.

Jacob and Rachel are my g-g-g-grandparents. They had three sons; Jacob Jr,, William (my g-g-grandfather)and John. The only information I have on John is his birth about 1825 and (possible) death in 1866. I've found no record of his marriage or family. Hope this helps some.

That's cool--he and his wife must have been great people to take in (and apparently raise) two children who weren't even related to them.
