William Edward Blacksten

My great grandfather, William Edward Blacksten was born December 1862, in Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. And he died before June 1891, was kicked on the head by a horse and died from injuries. The 1870 Federal Census lists William living with his parents in Jefferson Twp, Noble County, Indiana. The 1880 Federal Census lists William living in Green Twp, Noble County, Indiana. I'm needing help in trying to find out where he was living when he died, also where he is buried, and his exact death date. William married Laura Lefler on 2 October 1883, in Seneca County, Ohio. William and Laura had four children, Oscar Bernard Blacksten (Frontz), Lucy Almeda Blacksten, Florence M. Blacksten, and Arlo Rice Blacksten. Williams' parents were James Martin Blacksten, born 26 December 1834, Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio. Died 8 March 1908, Albron, Noble County, Indiana. Mary Jane Johnston born 4 April 1839, Lexington, Richland County, Ohio. Died 23 October 1921, Mena, Polk County, Arkansas. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking. Clarence Frontz

Hi Jean, I have not made any progress on the Blackstens in several years. We know that James Blacksten and Elizabeth Raver were married 13 May 1838 in Huron County, Ohio, and they were listed in the 1840 census in Thompson Twp, Seneca County, Ohio. In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census he said he was born in Maryland. But I have not found anything about him before the 1838 wedding. It looks like they moved from Ohio to Indiana about 1845. Maybe there would be property records in Seneca Co., Ohio around 1838-1845, but I think that could be a long shot. I think DNA testing would be the best chance of finding where he came from, but I don't know of any of the Blackstens who are interested in the family history.

Gail

I have run across James Blacksten who lived in LaGrange Co. IN in my search for my family. I did see that James and Elizabeth were buried in a LaGrange Co. Cemetery. I used to live near there. I think that family also lived in Sturgis, MI which is just across the IN state line. Some of my Blackstens lived about 20 miles from LaGrange in Noble County, IN so I suspect they were all from the same lines back to OH then to MD or DE. I also found a James "Bloxom" in Noble Co., and that spelling was not uncommon in that area. Still hoping to find the connection.

Your James Blackstone Jr. was born 27 Jan 1823 Guernsey County, Ohio, and died 18 January 1905, Hocking Co., Ohio. He married Maria Elizabeth Sheley/Shealey/Sheeley on 13 July 1842 in Guernsey County, Ohio. (Marriage date comes from "History of Hocking Valley," Chicago: Inter-State Publishing Co.1883, pages 1075 - 1076.)

James was actually the son of James Blackstone Sr. and Nancy Dennis. They married on April 25, 1822, in Guernsey County, Ohio, (Guernsey County Marriage Records, Book A, 1810 - 1832, page 166.) James Sr. died 1825 in Guernsey County, Ohio.

Nancy's second husband was Thomas Blackstone, brother of James. They married on December 29, 1825, in Guernsey County, Ohio. (Guernsey County Marriage Records, Book A, 1810 - 1832, page 258, Blacksten Thomas, Blacksten Nancy).

I am descended from David Dennis, the brother of Nancy Dennis. I have a lengthy file on Nancy, her children and grandchildren, plus lots of information about the Dennis family. I will be happy to share.

My disguised email is mcalTage@cox.net. Replace the "T" with "p" and you will have my real address.

Janice

Hi Jean,

Charles Blacksten's parents were James and Elizabeth (Raver) Blacksten.

I've copied his obit below. Some other information that I've found, and might not have posted to the board yet, one of Charles's brothers, John J. Blacksten also served in the civil war and died Camp Sherman, MS on 21 Aug 1863.

Elizabeth Raver's parents were Jacob and Susanna (Beisel). I have details on the Raver line back to the immigrant, Johann Leonhardt Raver/Reber. If you don't already have this info I can send it to you. Lee Reber has done extensive research on the Raver/Reber line, and there is some discussion on those message boards.

I still have not found James Blacksten's parents. I think DNA testing is the best chance of finding a connection to other Blacksten families.

In The Miles Reporter, published at Subula, Jackson County, Iowa, June 23, 1906

CHAS. BLACKSTEN DEAD

Another of our Oldest and Most Highly Respected Citizens
Passes Away After Long Illness

Charles C. Blacksten was born in Huron county, Ohio, Sept 2nd, 1838. and departed this life in Clinton, Ia., June 18, 1906, in his 68th year. When he was nine years of age his parents moved to Stuben county, Indiana, and later to LaGrange, Ind., and here he grew to manhood.

At the outbreak of the civil war when not yet 23 years old, he enlisted in Co. G, 30th Ind. Infantry, and was mustered into the service, Aug. 27th 1861. At the end of two years and four months, on Dec. 16th, 1863, because of disability, he was discharged at Whiteside station, Tenn. The next eight months brought him such relief that he again enlisted on August 22, 1864, this time in Battery A First Ind. Seige artillery. He served in the army of the Mississippi until the close of the warand received an honorable discharge in New Orleans, Aug. 8, 1865.

On the 8th of the following March he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Wells, who after 34 years of married life preceded him to the grave, having died Sept. 25, 1900. He and his wife moved to Iowa April 12th 1871 and resided in this community until death claimed them. The family consists of one son, Orville, of Kingsley, Ia., and three daughters, Apama Yappen, Addie Ericksen and Lottie Snyder, all of Miles. These all survive and were present at the funeral.

[There are several more paragraphs on the funeral, choir, church, his character and patriosm, etc. His daughters were married to Charles Yappen, Walter Erichson and Earl Snyder.]
Jeffrey, can you tell me the parents and grandparents of your Charles Clayton Blacksten? I am curious about his middle name as many of the Jacob Clayton Blackstone descendants carry the Clayton name. Since I am hitting a dead-end on my research, I wonder if there is a connection. It is my information that my Blackstens/Blackstones came from MD or DE, then to OH.

My name is Jason K. Darby, and my great-great grandfather was a William Brown Blacksten, born 1855 in Ohio and who died in 1928 in Caldwell Missouri. Based on the information I have found, he was the son of a James Blackstone (Born in 1822 in Guersney Ohio; died 1900 in Hocking Ohio) who was the son of a Thomas Blackstone (born in 1805 in Chester Pennsylvania; died in 1870 in Guersney Ohio) and of Mary E. Sheley (born 1821 in Guersney Ohio and died 1900 in Hocking Ohio). Any information corroborating this or elaborating on this would be appreciated.

This side of my family is really giving me fits at times. My oldest brother passed away in 2000, and I wish he was still here. He was our historian. I'll keep checking leads though. I'll let you know if I find anything about a James Blacksten also.
Thanks!!
Ruby

Dear Annice Kelsey,
I have a sight on MyFamily.com with all the information I have on Forney Wade Blacksten,
which was my grandpa's father. I do have names of all his siblings. If you have more information on siblings, I would like to add it to pedigree on Blacksten site. If you will send me your email address I will send you an invite to the site. How are you connected to the Blacksten family? My email is BlackstenR@aol.com. Hope to hear from you soon. I do have some letters from a couple of my grandfathers' brothers but I have to locate in storage in northern California. List of siblings are Ora Earl and Harvey Erwin and Walter Guy and Aubrey Wade and Herbert Hadley and David Eli and Leroy and Lemar and then finally a girl who was Viola May and one more son named Oliver Joe for a total of 11 siblings to Forney Wade Blacksten and Etta Eleanor Nichols. This is the information that my grandpa has left me. Oliver Joe lives in So. California and his son lives in Connecticut but I do not have close contact with either of them. I have talked to Oliver Jr. a year or so ago due to the fact that his daughter went to Chico State Universary in Northern California. Any contacts with other family members through email or otherwise would be appreciated.
Thank You,
Rick Blacksten

I am Richard Guy Blacksten and my father was Richard Leon, grandfather was Walter Guy. Rea Cloud was my grandmother. Looking to communicate with other Blackstens to connect up our family tree. My grandpa was born in 1906 in Oklahoma(?) and had about 10 brothers. Oliver was in Southern Ca. and his son is in Conn. He also had brothers in Colorado and New Mexico and I think Ohio. I know when I was a kid that he used to go back east somewhere for a family reunion but I never went myself. My uncle Bill and aunt Jo live in Yukon, Ok. I have other information on the family but will have to search for it in papers. Names and dates, etc. will be in those papers. Let's hear from you Blackstens.

My grandfather was born in Missouri. I had some paperwork that I misinterpreted, but now I am sure it's right. (Warrensburg, Missouri, March 16, 1906) His grandfather was Eli Blacksten from West Lebonon, Ohio, born in Sept. of 1842 and his father was Daniel Blackstone who changed name to Blacksten for some reason. Daniel was born in Westmoreland Co., Pa. in Oct. 1813 but died in Wayne Co., Ohio. I think from information that I have received from others that this is where the Blacksten's split up and went different directions for some reason. No work in Ohio or something like that. Then my grandfathers family split up and went different directions during the depression years and the dust bowl in Oklahoma. More information and postings of family news is needed on MyFamily.com Blacksten site. So come and help us unravel the mysteries of our ancestors. Or just come and post pictures and make contact with other sections of our family. Looking forward to seeing you in the future.
Rick

Ruby,

I checked the 1880 census records, the place of birth is difficult to read but it looks to me like John H. Blacksten's father was born in MD, not MO (ancestry does show it as MO in the index, but MD seems more likely at that time).

The 1860 census had a George H. Blackstone family in Green Twp, Hocking, OH, with a son John H., age 12 (born about 1848). I'm guessing that this might be your family.

The same family is listed in the 1870 census in Ward Twp, Hocking OH, but they are indexed in ancestry as "Blackdore". (This name is almost always misspelled in the original records and/or mistranscribed in the index.) Hope that helps you connect to the other Hocking Blackstens. John H. had several brothers.

I have a James Blacksten born about 1815 in MD, he lived in Seneca and Huron Counties, Ohio, later moved to Branch County, MI. I have not found a connection to the Hocking County Blacksten's, yet.

Gail

Ruby - Looks like they are also listed in the 1850 census in Hocking, although John H. is listed as Henry in 1850, assuming it is the same family.

On the LDS website there is a wedding record:
GEORGE K. BLACKSTON
Marriages:
Spouse: MARY JANE LAUGHLIN
Marriage: 17 APR 1845, Morgan, Ohio

the K might actually be an H., and Morgan is close to Hocking, so this might be worth checking out too.

Please let me know if you find anything in MD. I have a big brickwall with my James Blacksten born about 1815 in MD.
Charles C. Blacksten obit

Hi Jean, I just a received a copy of the obit for Charles C. Blacksten (born in Ohio 1838, died in Miles, IA 1906) and it confirms that he is the son of my James & Elizabeth Blacksten. Charles married Ellen Wells in 1866, and had 4 children, a son Orville and three daughters, Apama, Adelaide and Lottie.

Charles was born Sept 2, 1838 in Huron County, Ohio. I think I also found the 1840 census record for the family in adjacent Seneca County.

James Blackson 20-30, Seneca, OH
Female 20-30
1 boy 0-5
1 girl 0-5

So this would suggest a connection to the other Blacksten (or Blackston) families of Seneca and Huron County. I'll copy part of the obit below.

[that's incorrect, they moved from Steuben to

His daughter was married to Charles Yappen.]

Hi Jean,

The information I have is from the 1850, 1860 & 1870 census records, and a death certificate in 1873. My James Blacksten was born in Maryland about 1815 to 1817, and his wife Elizabeth was born in PA.

I don't know who his parents were. The first son listed in the census is named Charles C. Blacksten, so maybe Charles was his father's name?? Based on the kids birth places the family was in Ohio before 1839 until 1844, but I don't know which county in Ohio. They were in Indiana by 1846, and in Otsego Twp, Steuben County IN in the 1850 census. (Steuben is just east of Largange Co IN)

In 1860 & 1870 they were in Noble Twp Branch Co Michigan,
and James died in Branch Co in 1873. The name is usually listed in the census records as Blackston, but the spelling actually appears to be Blacksten. They did a bad job transcribing this name in the census index - the name is incorrectly listed as "Blacks" in the 1870 census, even though the script clearly spells Blacksten.

Yes - it sounds like there might be a connection between these families. Where did your family go after Noble Co IN?

I'm also looking for my gggg-grandfather James Blackston (or Blacksten), he was born in Maryland around 1815, he moved to Ohio, then Indiana and died in Branch Co MI in 1873. He was married to Elizabeth Howlford and they had 8 children:

Charles C. b.1838 in Ohio
Elizabeth b. 1839 Ohio
Sarah Ann b. 1841 Ohio
Clarinda b. 1842 Ohio
John J. b.1843 Ohio
Mary A. b, 1845 Indiana
Susan b. 1847 Indiana
James b. 1851 Indiana

Probably just a coincidence - but Sarah Ann Blackston married Jesse Myers and had a grandson named Clayton Myers.

I have not been able to find anything more about James Blackston but there is an excellent webpage on the Blackston family, mostly in England but also some information on the US at this link:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/christopher.atkinson700/docs/in...

There were four brothers...William, Emmanel, Henry, and Charles, plus sisters Flora, Bessie, and Elizabeth. If you know any of these people I would appreciate your letting me know. Branch CO. is only about 50 miles from where my great great grandfather James Blacksten lived in his later years(Noble CO. IN). He was born 1830-1834 depending on whose records you believe. Your James may have been a brother to my James' father, Jacob Clayton Blackstone who was b. abt.1808, and the name Clayton may well be a family name, perhaps of one of the mothers. Do you know who were the parents of your James? I believe my Blackstens came from Kent Co, either MD or DE, depending on the change in state boundary lines...Where in OH and IN did your James live? I have previously seen a James in Whitley Co, IN which is right next to Noble Co. IN.

Jacob Clayton Blacksten/Blackstone

Is anyone researching this name? I am looking for info on my g-g-great grandfather Jacob C., born in DE or MD in 1808. He lived in Richland Co. OH, married Mary Cromer/Kramer and
had children James Martin, Wm, Oliver, etc. The children later lived in IN, MO, OK, etc. I am unable to determine Jacob's parents names. Any info appreciated.

Thanks! I will see if I can find leads on this info. I think, in time, we will find that the Blackstens were connected to the Claytons. I will try to research this in the Allen County, IN library as they have lots of materials for all states. I believe that the Blackstens were also connected to the name Martin. Have you looked for your people on the Soldiers and Sailors site for Civil War records? Its been a good source for the Blacksten men, as 5 sons of Jacob Blacksten, Ohio, were in the Civil war at one time. There were several other Blacksten/Blackstones also on the OH rosters.

Re: Blackstens' family

Could possibly be a link: my grandfather's family was from OK: has a huge family. He traveled to ID about 1905 when he was 16 years old: Had native American ancestry too. We've never been in touch with the OK branch of the family. There was some old talk of changing the name from Blackstein to Blacksten due to an argument? His name was James Clarence Blacksten. If you see a connection I'd love to hear from you! S.
