I was born Patrick Bruce Blackler in n.h. 1963. I grew up in foster care, and can't seem to find anything about my father side of the family. My father was John Earl Blackler. My mother is Dorothy Mae Riemer. I'd love to find something of my past. I know that there are alot of secret's that no one will talk about, including the mystery involving Deborah Horn. I'm in need of information about our family members to help solve this case. I believe that I saw her on the day of her disappearance.

Some of the names you have, I do not, for example I have two people with the surname Richardson in my tree, but they were born in the 1940's and the 1970's. I have two Rennels, one born in the 1800s and the other with no birth date at present, and no Charles Blackler's anywhere. This was the reason why I suggested you contacted Nigel with your tree as he is very good at picking up accidental deviations! I wish you the best in contacting Nigel, and I would love to know either way whether there is ultimately a link between us. In the meantime, if you'd like a copy of my tree, please let me know how you would like me to email it over to you. Best wishes, Sarah

Hi Sarah, yes, assuming that what I've found/assumed from trees on Ancestry is correct, I am descended from Henry Blackler and Mary Watts.
What I can tell you for sure is that my g.g. grandparents were John Richardson (b. Brixham 1850) and Sarah Jane Blackler (b. 1853). I also know for sure that Sarah Jane Blackler's parents were Charles Regent Blackler (b. Brixham abt 1811) and Sarah Masters (b. Brixham abt 1811). Charles Regent Blackler's parents were Thomas Blackler (b. Brixham 1784) and Jane Rennels (b. Brixham 1786). That's about as far as I have gone where I've been able to check things for myself. Beyond that it gets more speculative and reliant on the trees of strangers, but as far as I can see, Thomas Blackler was the son of John BLackler (b. Brixham 1753) and Sarah [?] (b. 1760 Devon), and John's parents were Henry Blackler and Mary Matts.
So, as I say, I don't fully trust my information prior to Thomas Blackler and Jane Rennels, but it would appear that we're working on the same family (and in any case, it's my understand that all Blacklers are actually descended from the same line in South Devon, so in that sense anyone with Blackler ancestors, especially if they're known to be in Brixham, must surely be related). All in all, I think it's highly likely that we are indeed distantly related.
I would be very happy to take a look at your tree to compare - probably a PDF would be easiest, although I can look at a GEDCOM too. Not sure if you can attach files through Ancestry mail, so if not, I'll send you my email address in a private message (would rather not broadcast it here).
Incidentally, I recently took a DNA test with 23andme, and one of the discoveries I've made seems to indicate that a fragment of DNA that I inherited from a Blackler ancestor as far back as the early to mid 1600s links me as a distant cousin with a Blackler family in Texas. They have exactly the same fragment of DNA. I'm yet to fully prove the connection is through the Blackler line, but certainly we share that DNA and the Blackler line seems the most plausible explanation. It's pretty exciting to find cousins shared through an ancestor from around 400 years ago!

Hi again! I have just tentatively looked at your tree and think that in a couple of places you may have gone down the wrong line, which is very easily done as I have done it myself before now. There is a very helpful chap in New Zealand called Nigel Blackler who has a master database of many Blackler lines worldwide, and it may pay you to send a copy of your tree to him (blackler@stc.quik.co.nz) and he will check it out, advise you where you may have wrong and also put you in touch with other people who are also researching your line. Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Marcus, are you related from Henry Blackler and Mary Watts? If so, I don't mind sharing my tree with you as I guess we must be distantly related (which is why I was getting so excited earlier) - its just working out where. However, my tree isn't on this site so I would have to send you a copy either via GEDCOM or pdf, which may be easier. Please let me know what is easier. Best wishes, Sarah

Hi Sarah, yes indeed it sounds like we're looking at the same line. As I say, I haven't really researched anything myself that far back, what I have is only what I've gathered from other trees on Ancestry, so it's by no means to be trusted as accurate until we can double check it for ourselves. But I will invite you to my tree as in any case it makes sense to join forces when we're researching the same line. I'm originally from Devon myself, like the Blacklers themselves, although these days I'm in Germany (and hence relying on sources here rather than getting a chance to go to the Devon record office and do some real research!).
Best wishes and no doubt we'll be in touch further. Tree invitation on the way now.
Marcus

Hi Marcus, thanks for your reply. I have previously been given the name of a Henry Blackler as the son of the Henry at the top of my tree and then going back to a John, but I couldn't prove it. However, if you also have a Henry Blackler, born 1723 and who married a Mary Watts, on your tree then we may be researching the same family (and I am trying hard not to get excited here), so please may I be able to see your tree please? As a matter of interest, are you in the UK? Many thanks, Sarah

I have him *tenatively* as the son of Henry Blackler who was born in 1700 in Devon (exact place unknown, but likely somewhere between Totnes area and Brixham). I say tentatively because it's based only on other trees I've found here, I don't have access to any sources to verify this. But if true, this Henry snr. was in turn the son of another Henry Blackler, born 26 Sep 1672 in Cornworthy, Devon, and I've got the line going back a further couple of generations beyond that, to a John Blacker born in 1620. Contact me if you'd like to take a look at my tree (it's not publicly viewable, invitation only). As I say, it's all very tentative so it would need to be researched and verified further, but perhaps it helps.

Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for the information you provided. I had also heard that many of the U.S. Blacklers (and there aren't too many left!) came from the Devon area of England long ago. I also had heard abou the Blackler Department Store in Liverpool. I'm not yet sure how we're related but will continue to add pieces to the puzzle I've started. My line of Blacklers was in the Marblehead, Massachusets area since way back in the 1600's, and they also came from Devon. I'll keep you posted as I go forward.

Thanks again!

Edmund (Chuck) Blackler
Rapid City, SD

I have just been searching on the British Newspaper Archive and found a great article which involves my ancestor as a witness in a "charge of attempting to poison". The other witnesses are a Richard Blackler and also a Charlotte Tapson and Eliza Jane Tapson.

If anyone would like me to send them a copy of the article, let me know! It's great because it has these people's actual words they said in court.

The date is 1860 and they were servants at a house in Ipplepen, Devon.

Hello there- It is now March 10 2013 and I have been amiss in my continued research of the Blackler Family Tree ---due to Family matters and getting resettled in a senior apt in Edmonds Wa.-Just wanted you to know I plan to continue my search- I collaborate with Shirley Luis Greenfield who has far more information on Blackler's then I do (She is married to Randy Greenfield the son of Jean Blackler my 1st cousin here in Seattle Wa. Jean's father was my Uncle Ashley Duane Blackler and eldest son of Edward A Blackler and Harriet J.Sweetzer Blackler, of Lake Forest Illinois. Edward is buried in Lake Forest Ill. and Harriet ended up living with her son Arthur in Seattle Wa and buried in Evergreen Washelli Cemetary-- If you go into my Family tree of Blackler/Sweetzer/Mooney you will find some more information on this subject. If this info does not compute for your needs--at least it makes for interesting reading and study in Geneology. Regards Evelyn

Hi Darcy

I've been trying to find a missing link in my father's bloodline, and I'm hoping I have found it.

However, I can't be 100% certain at this time.

Basically, if my research is correct, then John Blackler is my 2nd great grand uncle. Quite exciting, really!!

I always thought my dad's family were Welsh, but when my mum told me that one of my dad's ancestors (on his father's side) had fled to Wales from Cornwall in England in the 1800s, I started to try to find the link. Apparently, the ancestor (Probably one of the Joseph Blacklers) shot a gamekeeper after being caught poaching, and fled with his family to Wales to avoid transportation to Australia or one of the other colonies. In the process, he changed his name from Blackler to Blackwell.

I know there is truth in the name change as my cousin has our grandfather's birth certificate which states his name as "Thomas Charles Blackwell (also known as Blackler)", but unfortunately, both my mum and dad are now dead, so getting further information is very difficult.

If we are related, I wondered if you would be able to shed some light from your side of the Atlantic?

Either way, it makes for interesting winter evenings!!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Regards

Phill Blackwell

:)
