My Great Grandmother's maiden name is Bjerke But I Don't see any of the names that you gave in my family. My cousin in doing research got in touch with a branch of the Norwegian Government called Nordmanns Forbundet. I don't know if your familiar with how they named their children. I know that in tradition, the town that they were born in was used in their surname also their fathers name. sen for a boy and datter for a girl. For example My grandfathers name is Ole Pederson Bjerke. His Father's name was Peder and He was born in the town Nord Bjerke. It could be helpful in finding the information that you need.

Hello,
While doing a search on the FamilyHistory.com
message board for Hatton, ND- I came across
you query for BJERKE. My mother's late
sister Opal Livedalen was married to William
Bjerke. Uncle Bill - along with my mother
and her family grew up in Hatton, ND. He
would be someone that may have a lot of
information on your Bjerke family. He is
really into genealogy and got me started on
my Livedalen family.
I have a Hatton North Dakota - Diamond
Jubilee 1884-1959 book. I did a quick look
through. There are many Bjerke pictures
and articles. I did not find Anton - but
that doesn't mean he wasn't included.
The book does not have an index.
I am sure Uncle Bill would be thrilled to
find someone who is also researching the
Bjerke family. Please reply and I will
supply you with his E-Mail address.

From what I've been able to see so far,
there seems to be a large Bjerke family
in the Hatton area, and a small one.
My family is from the smaller one ;)
I have not been able to see any connection
between the two families yet, but I'm
willing to keep trying :) email me at

Bjerke Families in the Hatton/Northwood ND Area

There are a number of Bjerke Families in the Haatton/Northwood North Dakota Area. Not all are related to each other. For example, my cousin who graduated from Hatton Highschool has Bjerke Blood on both her mother and fathers side. They are not related. My Bjerke ancestors took the name Bjerke after they came over from Norway. Seems like Bjerke was used by many. My Bjerke's took the name from a Birch Grove near their home in Norway.

If you are looking for Hatton or Northwood Bjerke Families, drop me an E-mail and I will forward it to the Geniologist in our Family.

My Kappedal name came from the KAPPADAL Farm near Aurland Norway.

Anton Bjerke lived in Hatton. He had a brother John, who died then Anton married John's widow. He moved to Grandforks and died there. The complete Genealogy book of this Bjerke family has been done.
I no longer have it as I gave it to my cousin, who is realted to this family.
The book was done by Anderson who lives in Fargo, N.D.
The Bjerke Family who lived near Northwood took the name from the Birches in Norway. Last name was not Bjerke in Norway,
but Peterson. they came from Gran, Norway
Hadeland...
I wrote this book. It is 320 pages long and went back to 1600's.
The Bjerke's of Hatton and Northwood are NOT related.
You may e-mail if you have any further questions.
