Canadian Birge's - Herman Birge

Cam Birge  (View posts) Posted: 25 Feb 2001 9:31PM GMT
Herman Birge is buried in St. Jude's Anglican Church Cemetery in Oakville, Ontario. Cyrus was born in 1847 so he may have been the son of Herman. I don't know who he married though the name of Helen Ainsley does seem to ring a bell, possibly from the headstone at the cemetery. There are several other Birge's buried at St. Jude's. To the best of my knowledge Herman is the earliest born Birge buried there and appears to be the starting point of the Canadian Birge's. We have no clue where he originated from at this point.

: I am searching for information about my grandfather, Cyrus Albert Birge, Nov. 7, 1847 - Dec. 14, 1929. There is a brief entry in the Canadian Encyclopedia. He merged his company, Canada Screw Co. with others to form the Steel Co. of Canada in Hamilton ON in 1910. He was active in the Canadian Manufacturers Assn. and the Methodist Church, and donated to Victoria College, University of Toronto to build the Birge-Carnegie Library.
I would appreciate getting any information about his parents, siblings if any, and his spouses (I believe there were three, one nee Vanstone). He had at least two children, my father, Charles Alexander of Oakville ON,and a daughter, Edith McKay of Burlington ON, but I believe there was another son, possibly Herman, who is buried in St. Jude's cemetery, Oakville ON.

Cyrus Birge's father came from Hartford, Conn., about 1840 and settled in the Oakville area; in 1842 he married Helen Ainslie of nearby Nelson Township. Despite his father's death in 1855, CYRUS was able to spend several years at local schools, including the Oakville Grammar School.

I have a Cyrus Birge that was born in 29-Oct-1797 from
New Haven Conn.
All the Birge's I have found all connect in Conn. & Vt.
I couldn't find Herman Birge in my data base. I am almost
sure he is connected.
Do you have any idea who Herman's father might be??? If
you did maybe he may be in my Birge data base.

Hi Sam, the original post from Bill and Cam Birge is they are trying to find who the Canadian Birge tie to. I was able to determine Herman from Hartford, CT but not his parents yet. Herman information says he was from Hartford so one of the Birge lines in the Hartford area needs to be looked at. I have looked at a lot of Hartford ones but yet to pin point a Herman since census records will not show children so need a vital record from a church to find him. Your branch which is Cyrus of VT is different from the Canadian Cyrus. Herman is unusual for a first name in the Birge line. First Herman I have come across..
But I feel that there is other Birge's from Suffield Twp., Hartford Co., CT that were in Hamilton which is near Oakville in Ontario. That would be Morton Birge, son of Anson Birge. I only have 3 children for Anson so possible more unknown yet..

Jerry,
Your right Herman is an unusual name in the Birge linage.
Cyrus is a common name in my Birge linage. Just thought
there might be a connection being so close there.
Thanks for the reply.
Sam,

Yes, Herman Birge is my great-great grandfather, and is almost certainly the father of Cyrus Birge, who's son Charles Alexander Birge was the father of my father, William Pentland Birge. They are all buried in St. Judes Cemetery in Oakville, Ontario (between Hamilton and Toronto).

Thank you for helping to shed some light on where the Canadian side of the Birge lineage originated.

Here is info on the Paletta Lakefront Park in Burlington, Ontario, Canada which was purchased by Cyrus Birge in 1912. Our family used to go swimming there when my grandfather would visit his sister Edythe.

http://cms.burlington.ca/Page385.aspx

Cyrus had another residence (tudor syle mansion on Lake Ontario) at 2024 Lakeshore Road East in Oakville which my grandparents (Charlie and Sue Birge) lived in as their main residence. Despite efforts by the Oakville historical society to preserve it, it was torn down for a new home in the 1980's.

There are wonderful memories at the Oakville house of a bygone age - we were so lucky to have experienced those times. Charlie Birge would belt out Louis Armstrong tunes on the piano in the living room at parties. Croquet was played in summer on one of the large lawns of the property. Many trees to climb and the attic was very spooky. Peter (gardener and chauffer) and Dora (cook) along with Charlotte (housekeeper) kept us all very spoiled.

There's a lot of info on John Ward Birge and the Battle of the Windmill in 1852. Just google him. He does come from Upper New York state so it could be a match?
