Canadian Birge's

Cam Birge  (View posts) Posted: 5 Sep 2000 3:37PM GMT
Does anyone have history relating to the Canadian side of the family? How did a lineage develope here. I am only aware of one family up here for any length of time and that is our own which dates back into the 1700's.

How far back do you trace your line? There is a quite extensive listing of the family tree all the way to 1630 with Richard Birge being the first to come to America. I am confident you can place your line in the tree if you have the founding member.

Thanks for the response. Not sure of exact dates. Herman Birge is buried in Oakville, Ontario and is as far back as I can go (late 1700's or early 1800's). There was a John Birge who, in the mid-1800's, came up from the U.S. as a rebel against the United Empire Loyalists and was wanted by the British colonial government. His partner, Prescott, was caught and hanged. Cyrus Birge (born in 1847) is in the Canadian Encyclopedia as a founder of the Steel Company of Canada (Stelco). There is Birge Street in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada's Pittsburgh) and the Birge-Carnegie Library (built thru donations from steel) at the University of Toronto. I'll ask my father who may have a better idea. Is there a place to view the history starting with Richard Birge

Birge Family Line

This is the most complete family line I have seen, at rootsweb you can search off of the name BIRGE and find others, however.

There are some discrepancies in the information but should give you a good start.

Thank you very much for that link. This is a lot of fun, learning lots about the family. Will try to tie in to a family line.

This might be a long shot but my great grandfather was a John Birge (and there were many) The hook that interests me is that he worked in the Niagara Falls area on a major bridge project before the Civil War. Do you have more of a name on Prescott? One of John's sons married a widow of a John Prescott. My John Birge resided in the Central NY (Utica) area and I know very little of his life between 1820 and 1860.... Hey, you never know.

Hi Cam, noticed your post on Canadian Birge's. Is your Herman Birge (Birdge) whom married Hellen M. AINSLEY in Gore District, Ontario in 1846? I haven't come across any Herman's.. mostly a German first name. There were Cyrus's out of Vermont, just maybe..

Prescott

There is a town in Ontario, Canada by the name of Prescott. My understanding is that the town was named after the Prescott who joined with John Birge (possibly your great-grandfather)to attack Upper Canada in the early-mid 1800's. There must be a web site for Prescott, Ontario. You could likely find more information on Prescott there.
