Virginia M. "Red" Bires, 90, of McKeesport and Liberty Borough, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. She was born July 4, 1920, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Roy and Bridget Atkinson Gay. She was the wife of the late Edward R. Bires (Bireschik). She is survived by son, Roy (Connie) Bires, of Swissvale; grandchildren, Brigitte (John) Busch, of Braddock Hills, and Julie (Brian) Curran, of Kensington, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Xander, Becca and Addie. She was preceded in death by siblings, Sarah Dunlap, Elma Conley, Jim Gay and Ronald Gay aka Arthur Kibe. She had worked for the former Jaisons Department Store and Sisters Clothing Store and previously worked in Duquesne Works during World War II. She was a lifelong member of West Side United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher, former member of the McKeesport YMCA and was an avid vitamin advocate, gardener and loved feeding the birds. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the HUNTER-EDMUNDSON-STRIFFLER FUNERAL HOME, 600 Market St., McKeesport, 15132 (412-678-6191). Services will be held at noon Wednesday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow.
