Feliciano “Felix” Bevilacqua - Abruzzo, Italy to Girard, Ohio 1921-2014

BOARDMAN, OH - Feliciano “Felix” Bevilacqua, 92, formerly of Girard, Ohio, passed away late Tuesday evening, June 17, 2014, at his home with his family by his side.

Felix was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Introdacqua, Abruzzo, Italy, the first-born son of Luigi and Maria Louisa Monaco Bevilacqua, and he came to the area to be with his father in 1937.

Felix attended Tod Woods School for a short time and later was sent out to work so that he and his father could send money for his mother, sister and brother to come to America.

Mr. Bevilacqua was drafted into the military when World War II began, even though he was not yet an American citizen.
He served the country in the U.S. Army under General George S. Patton for three years, storming Omaha Beach on D-DAY, a day he never forgot, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Crossing of the Rhine.
He received five Battle Stars, the Bronze Arrowhead Medal and the Croix de Guerre for his service.
Felix became a U.S. citizen in May of 1945 while still in Germany, and then returned to the United States in September of that year.

On Dec. 1, 1945, he married the love of his life, Angela Petrella.

Felix worked as a welder and later as a foreman at the Youngstown Foundry and Machine Company for 26 years until it merged with Wean United, where he worked for many years, and then he went to work for Youngstown Steel Tank.

In 1973, Felix founded Northeast Fabricators in an unused building in downtown Youngstown which grew to employ 25 people. It was quite an achievement for anyone, but especially for someone who “came across” and made his way all on his own.
He always worked hard and taught his family the importance of hard work, saving money, loyalty to this country, which he fought so hard to defend, and to never forget their Italian heritage.
Mr. Bevilacqua had many friends and did whatever he could to help them out.
He could always be counted on to “fix” things and always stressed the importance of keeping the family together and to always be a good friend.

Mr. Bevilacqua was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard, where he served as a trustee for the St. Rose Senior Citizens.

He was also a member of the St. Rose Grounds Crew and worked many other jobs at the parish, including usher and altar server at the church. Felix also belonged to the Mahoning Valley Foreman Association, served as President of the Mahoning Valley Technical Society, where he was awarded Man of the Year in 1994, was a Group Commander for the Civil Air Patrol, and also served as navigator and secretary for the Girard Council.

Felix leaves his wife of 68 years, Angela Petrella Bevilacqua; two daughters, Mary Louise (Patrick) Carlon of Boardman, with whom he made his home, and Patricia (James) Brown of Jackson, Mich.; a son, Ronald (Shawnee Spicer) Bevilacqua of Hudson, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Dina Maiorana (Ben Barnes) of Columbus, OH, Angela (Josh) Bloniasz of Suffield, Conn., Joseph (Erin George) Maiorana of Columbus, Anthony (Julie Sincich) of Girard, Joy Maiorana of Boardman, Keith Brown of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Kristopher Brown of Adrian, Mich., Elise (Ryan) Berndt of Chicago, Chrisitan (Kristen Ensler) Ambrose of Tennessee, and Natalie and Nathan Bevilacqua of Hudson; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Stella (Joseph) Comichisto and sister-in-law, Mary Bevilacqua both of Hollywood Florida; and three brothers-in-law, Andrew (Millie) Petrella of Girard, OH, Sam (Dahlia) Pagano of Girard, and James Petrella of Boardman.

A brother, Pasquale Bevilacqua; a sister-in-law, Dolores Petrella; and a brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Irene Pagano, are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at Kinnick Funeral Home McClurkin Memorial Chapel, 222 S. State St., Girard.

Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home and continue with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Rose Church at 1 p.m.

A committal service with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, OH .
(Mahoning County)

Visit kinnickfuneralhome.com to view this obituary and to send condolences online to Felix’s family.

Veteran

Yes, my grandpa was from there. His name was Bernard Gais. He and his brother used to ring the bells at the church there as young boys. That's about all I know of his life there. I plan on visiting next year and am trying to get as much info about that area and all of Italy. And my grandpa married Mary Diagoni (e?). Don't know if she was from that area also.

Anxious to hear from you....Susan

There were several Rosa Bevilacquas from Torriglia...Mine was born 10 Apr 1881. "My" Rosa's parents were: Giovanni Bevilacqua (1858) and Paola Rossi (1859) and she married first Luigi Mangini (born Torriglia Apr 1871) and after he died, Stefano Sciutto (Shutte) born Fonanagordia province, Genova 1867.

I also have the Traverso connection in my tree with Serifino/Serifinus/Giuseppe aka Michael and they married in NYC 22 Dec 1904. This Rosa's siblings were: Giovanni Battiste (1879), Giacomo (1880) my Rosa (1881), Rafael (1884) and Paolo (1888).

Paola Rossi had a sister, Maria (1857) who married Giovanni Battiste Bevilacqua (1855) and had at least 3 children: Palma, Maria and Rosa.

Other Rossi siblings: Andrea (Andrew) 1860, Luigi and Luigia (most likely twins) (1861). Hope this helps.

Cheers!
Stephen
Neither my mom or my sister knows what her actual name was, but they both met her...I never did.

I was told that 'nonie' is grandma and 'lala' is aunt in Ligurian dialect...but nobody knew on the Italian site.

Cheers.

And yes, would love to have some pics :)

Stephen

Re: Bevilacqua Brothers in NY/NJ

Since I am now living in Montreal, I guess I should start off with 'bonjour'...

...It's always great to meet cousins; I've met many while doing this research. So many wonderful stories. Unfortunately, my mom died last month so with her also dies anyone I am close to for making inquiries. I'm glad I got to ask zillions of questions last year. I do still have another 2nd cousin in NJ that I've corresponded with about all of this. She told me I had more information about her side of the family (Shutte) than she did. We compared some notes and I got some pics from her and my mom sent her a cookbook she made of family recipes (her last one) but I guess she got too busy with life and didn't hold up on her end when she said she would scan some pics and email them over the holidays when she wasn't working...

Hopefully, when I write and tell her of losing my mom she will get hyped up on genealogy again.

Here's a link where all of our great great grandparents and their families lived: http://www.unofficial.net/wanaque/midvale.html

It's got some interesting trivia along with pics of what it used to be like on the 'old Hook Road' where, it seems, everyone from Torriglia, Genova settled when they arrived. I suppose many would still be there today had they not flooded the town for the state watershed programme. Now it's the Wanaque Reservoir.

When I looked at the 1920 census and then an arrival manifest from the "Konig Albert" from 18 May 1904, I see that this was a pretty tight-knit group. When one's spouse died, they apparently married amongst themselves. A little creepy, but understandable when you think about it. But there are some skeletons that go along with that.

But if you noticed in 1920, there they all were on the Hook Road: Murchio/Mangini/Bevilacqua/Sciutto - living side by side. It was farm land back then.

We're definitely related, so it will be interesting to see just how close. You've given me some info that I think may help us both out with your post.

I found the folks at ItalianGenealogy.com to be very helpful indeed. There is a woman from Liguria region that really helped, as did others.

http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/topic23665.html is the thread I am referencing for Rosa Bevilacqua. Maria came up with not only the marriage info for Rosa Bevilacqua to Luigi Mangini but also to Stefano Sciutto (Shutte) after she was widowed. And how bizarre is this: When my great grandfather went to Genoa to escort his cousin to the states, the brother of who would become his widow's husband was traveling with them... they're listed on the same page. I wish I could find out some of the personal storeys behind all of that! But the point is, that forum has helpful peeps that showed me how to ferret out some records on different sites. I'm finally figuring out how to use them, lol.

They must have been into angelic themes back then as Rosa had a sister, Serafina (whom he fetched from Italy) and she married a man named Serafino(Serafinus/Michael)Traverso. There were loads of people with those names along with some form of John the Baptist (same in my French side) and ArcAnge(l). They lived right next door to each other. She also provided a free site for Passaic county naturalization paperwork (it's in that thread).

I'm pretty certain that our trees are going to intersect as our great great grandparents seem to be the same on one branch. I haven't had much luck on the Italian side in almost 5 years of doing this...but one branch traces all the way back to Cleopatra (75th great grandmother) on my mom's side and now that I've done a DNA test, my dad's side has led back to Jock and Tam Gordon (progenitors of many) and Alexander Gordon, not to mention the Stewarts and Robert the Bruce. Even saints! It's no wonder I love history...my family IS history!

After I see if I can put more of this together I'll send you an invite to my tree. I made it private so I can clean it up and verify things I should have never trusted from other people when I started. But I've got around 15K ppl already. Just can't seem to stop, lol. And I don't want people to just grab all the work I've been doing cleaning up what I should have never 'borrowed' in the first place.

Cheers,

Stephen Gordon
greatcyber@hotmail.com

Hello "cousin". You'd never know it by my last name- but my people were Manginis.

My great grandmother, Ida Murchio, married Carlo Mangini. Carlo came from Genoa Italy when he was 17. He had the following siblings: Mike, Lena (married a McCloud), LOUIS (bus driver that died), John, and Jack (had 6 kids in Lodi).

I have pics of some Manginis if you are interested. A great one of my great grandfather Carlo in front of their Midvale bus line with another guy-
Can't get it to attach on here unfortunately.

My great grandmother was Rosa Bevilacqua, born Apr 1881 (according to 1900 census). Her arrival record (9 Nov 1897) states she left Genoa 28 Oct 1897 and was going to NY to stay with her brother and uncle.

By 1900 she was living in Pompton Township (Midvale), Passaic County, NJ. She married Luigi Mangini in 1899. They had 3 girls: Teressa (Renie) in 1900, Palmyra in 1901 and Mary Amelia (Minnie) in 1903.

Both Rose and Luigi came from Torriglia, Liguria, Genova.

Around 1907, Luigi became ill and went on a sea voyage for his health. However he died in Italy just afterward.

Rose, now widowed, remarried in 1908. She married Stephen Shutte, also from Italy and had 3 boys, August, Robert and John.

Rose died 27 Sep 1936 in Wanaque, Passaic, NJ and is buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Butler, NJ.

Stephen Shutte died in 1957 and is buried in the same cemetery.

What I am trying to determine is who are the brother and uncle she stayed with in NY? Is it the bakery brothers?

in 1910 (census info) there were the following Bevilacquas in Wanaque, NJ: John, born 1800 in Italy; Louis (wife) b-1884 in Italy. They had 4 children born in NJ: John, 1908; Angelina, 1910; Joseph, 1912; Louise, 1914.

Any information that may help me to find Rose's family will be greatly appreciated.

According to a family Bible, we know that Rose DID come from Torriglia in Genoa.

Hoping to hear from some new cousins!

Pic of Luigi is attached; nothing on Rose/Rosa so far.

Stephen

Oh my bad,
I'm sorry Laureen. I'm Teresa Bellino Bobe. My grandmother was Teresa Bevilacqua the youngest child and only daughter to come over with her brothers. If you look on Teresa Bobe's family tree you will find the pictures.
It interesting to find out that some of our relatives lived in Little Italy. I don't know exactly where they lived but in 1930 Our uncle Tony lived near High Street in Brooklyn.

I an Andy Bevilacqua, son of Vincent Bevilacqua, his father was Carmine then his was Angelo Michelle--same family line you are looking into--I believe I have a picture of the Bevilacqua Bros bakery in my files--it will take some time to find it--I also have a large PAF file that goes back quite a ways to Ariano De Puglia with birth, matrraige and death certificates--I also found the Ellis Island file where Angelo Michele came over to the US

Hi Im looking for info on my great grandfather Giuseppe Bevilacqua. He was born around 1886 He immigrated to American around 1912 from Savelli, Italy which is in Calabria. I have his naturalization papers he filled out but never got a chance to send in. It says he came in through the port of Boston and it asked who he would be staying with and it said brother in law, last name Sacco. So Giuseppe had a sister who married a Sacco in Mass. and I have no idea what her name is. Giuseppe ended up settling in West Virginia. I was told by my great uncle they used to go visit his sister Theresa in Norwood, WV who married a man with the last name Priest. My uncle also said they would visit a brother in law in Norwood, WV named John Rocco and a cousin in Wheeling, WV named Sam Bevilacqua. Ive hit a wall with all these names. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated!

Stephen,

I am Lillian Bevilacqua, daughter to Angelo Bevilacqua the barber in the family. I remember your father & mother very well. Your father Nicholas taught my daughter Anna how to play the violin before we moved to California. I would very much like to share with you the details that we have on the family. If you would be kind enough to send me your e-mail address, I will send you a link to my tree. My niece Nancy is helping me with this so I will give you her e-mail address NLLOWELL@yahoo.com. My e-mail is nonapoo@sbcglobal.net. I would also like to be able to update the Pintauro side of our tree if you would be kind enough to send a link so we could also see your tree. Do you happen to have any pictures of your parents? I hopw to hear from you!
Love, your cousin
Lillian Bevilacqua

Andy, I am Lillian Bevilacqua Jones, daughter to Angelo Bevilacqua. We are cousins. My father Angelo was the brother to your Great Grandfather Carmine. I would very much like to get in touch with you. I also would like permission to view your tree. It seems you may be able to complete some of the missing details in our tree. Maybe I will have some information you may need. I would also like to see the picture of the bakery. I remember my Uncles well. My father Angelo was a barber. I moved to Ca with my father & sister Nancy in the 60's & lost track of my Bevilacqua family. I started my tree aftr my father's death so s lot of the details are missing that he could have helped me with. If you will send me your e-mail address I would be happy to send you a link to my tree. My e-mail is nllowell@yahoo.com.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Lillian

Nicholas owned the macaroni business. Ralph & John were two of the three brothers that worked for him. I did forward this picture to Lillian Bevilacqua Jones (Angelo Bevilaqua's daughter. He was the barber in the family) for her to take a look at. She said it is not John or Louis. She said that her Uncle Nick (Nicholas helped all the brothers start their own business ie bakery, theater, barbershop). She had an apt to go to but will take a closer look at the picture when she gets back. If you e-mail me your e-mail address I will pass along her email address & phone number.
I also have a copy of Angelo at his barber shop. I will post as soon as I figure out how to do it.

Nancy Mauro Lowell
NLLOWELL@yahoo.com

We plan in the future to go with white paint and make the names more legible.
We often to Holy Cross since it is the area my brothers and I grew up.

Hi Laureen,
Nice to meet you. I posted pictures of the Bevilacqua family grave. Sorry some of the names are not too visible. I plan on going to visit again with a can of white paint so the names can be visible again. All the people listed on the stone are about half of who is buried there. As soon as I find the list I will post it here all who are buried there and in the gravesite my mother and her cousin are buried.
I thought perhaps some of you may appreciate this picture, and perhaps also know more about the people in the picture.
I read this after I sent you a message. I would love to see what the bakery looked like and anything else you can send. I'm new to Ancestry.com so I'm not sure how this works. Do you need a personal email address?

I appreciate any information you have. My other question, do you use any other sources besides ancestry to gather information?

thanks,
Maria Bonomo Barton

Hi James

I never knew our grandfather or the name of the bakery he had, and for some reason I found this information about the Bevilaquas instead of the Bonomos, really interesting. They spelled my name wrong, and yes, I don't know where they got the name Vincent from. I thought your dad's mothers name was Gemma and I thought Grandpa Bevilaqua's nickname was Jimmy?

Definitely have to email you.

Maria

Teresa-

I'm new to this and I'm suprised to find any information on my mother's family, her name was Pauline Bevilaqua married John R. Bonomo. Her birthday was October 29, and I believe the year she was born was 1918. Anyway, I have 2 older brothers, John (Jack) and Richard, I'm Maria, they misspelled my name as "Marie".

All this information sounds pretty accurate except for a couple of corrections.
I knew my grandparents were from Avellino, but I thought it was the name of the town, not the province.

Please respond, I'll try and give you more information of whatever I know.

Maria Bonomo (Barton

Hi-
Thanks for the info! I have looked for the picture and can't find where you posted them, though.

Please tell me your name and how you are related. I am Gertrude Bevilacqua Fredella's granddaughter. Gertrude is Nicola's daughter and granddaughter of Michele.

I live in Queens and am very interested in where the Bevilacquas lived and what their lives were like. I have traced Nicola to Elizabeth Street in Little Italy in 1894, and I know he emigrated in 1889. I don't know where he was before 1894. It is likely that it was in Manhattan, on Elizabeth St. or somewhere else. I know that after he married in 1894 they lived on Mulberry St. and then moved to Brooklyn in 1900. Michele came a few years later. I think. Do you know where in Brooklyn he might have lived?

Any other info you have is welcome!
Laureen

I am Gertrude Bevilaqua's granddaughter. She married Louis Fredella and had 3 children: Sue, Connie and Frank. Connie and Frank are still alive, although Frank, my dad, has Alzheimer's. There are 9 grandchildren, mostly in the NJ-NY area.
Laureen Fredella
