Hi Elizabeth,
Am researching David Beaton Bethune of Scotland, are they the one and the same?
From what I deducted his son, Richard, left in 1625 or 1630. The Clearances I believe you are referring to are around 1745 after the Jacobite uprising. Look through the church records in Scotland and the ship records of immigrants during this time.
Hope this helps a little,
Jan Leishman

Bethune's emigrating to Quebec Ontario from Glenelg Scotland Highland Clearances

Hello,

My Bethune / Beaton ancestors emigrated from Glenelg / Isle of Sky Scotland to Quebec/Ontario during Highland Clearances. I have names, marriages, and birthdates but not emigration dates (1800-1850's?), or any info predating the emigration.Only a few even say origin Glenelg--most say origin Scotland. So not helpful! The recorded names I have are all Bethune, but my grandfather (long dead himself now) told me that his uncles and such were called the 'Beaton Boys'.

I am not sure where to start to try to learn more about my Glenelg family pre - Clearances? Was the main set of evictions/emigrations from Glenelg in 1849/1850? I also have had a hard time learning about their news lives in Ontario. Should I use the info I have to research Scottish records? What is a good way to research Canada info? Does anyone have advise on how to proceed, I'm pretty ignorant as you can see!

I am in the USA but will be traveling to Glasgow and Edinburgh (getting married) in may 2015.

thank you!
Elizabeth

Rosa Lee McLeod (Barnett)

I am trying to find more information on my Aunt Rosa Lee Barnett. I have just recently found my mother's nieces and nephews--we are trying to pool our information together to hopefully answer even more questions that surface. My cousin, Ronald, mentioned that she had been married a couple of times and been married to a McLeod. They had a son, Kendall, who is now deceased. Her other children, Kendall's siblings, Samuel and Michele Roker. They lived in New York. Aunt Rosa had moved back to CA where she died. She was born in Beggs, Oklahoma. Her mother's name was Manda Coleman. She had three sisters, Ida Mae, Izella and Helen. Their grandparents were Peter and Lucy Coleman. She owned a hair salon in New York. I am hoping someone could assist me or maybe steer me in the right direction. Please contact me at wanda-j1956@hotmail.com

Hi Dorothy,

I am researching the McLeod and Bethune line. My great grandfather was Malcom McCorquodale, son of Marron Morag "Marion" McLeod b.1770, daughter of Neill McLeod and Sarah Morag "Sally Marron" Bethune and John McCorkindale (McCorquodale).

Do you have information on her parents and siblings? The reason that I ask is:
1. www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onglenga/Genealogies/Bethune.pdf
This particular genealogy lists Sarah Bethune as the daughter of John Angus Bethune and Christian Campbell with no footnotes to follow. It also lists Neil McLeod as being of Gesto which is in error.
2. www.ourfamilyhistories.org/getperson.php?personID=I60507&amp...
This genealogy is extremely well researched and sourced and does not list Sarah Bethune as a sibling.

Neil McLeod b. 1750 is an enigma. I recently received the following e-mail from a genealogist on Skye:
The misassociation to Gesto House - RE: Family Research Marjorie (marjorie@skye-kin.co.uk) 9/07/14
"The only information I have is from the volumes of MacLeod Genealogy compiled Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison. You mentioned Neil MacLeod born Gesto 1750 son of Iain MacLeod and Anne surname not known. From Volume III of the Genealogies I see that Neil is born around 1754 and died about 1836, and was the son of John MacLeod and Annabella MacKinnon. She was daughter of Neil MacKinnon of Borreraig in the parish of Strath. Their children were: Neil who succeeded his father in Gesto; Margaret who was dead by 1786; and Flora who married Captain William MacLeod VI of Hamer in Glendale and they had family. According to what I have read Neil married Flora MacKinnon of Corry, parish of Strath and their first child John was born 1795. They had a large family of 13 children."

MisAssociation to Neil MacLeod XV of Gesto: Neil MACLEOD (XV of Gesto) BIRTH: ABT 1754 DEATH: 21 DEC 1836, Stein,Waternish,Scotland,United Kingdom BURIAL: Churchyard,Struan,Waternish,Skye Father: John MACLEOD Mother: Annabella MACKINNON SOURCE: Rev. Dr. Donald MacKinnon and Alick Morrison, THE MACLEODS: THE GENEALOGY OF A CLAN, Section III, "Cadet Families", Edinburgh, The Clan MacLeod Society, 1970, pp. 288-289.

So do you have any information as to Neil McLeod's parents, siblings, and where they were from on Skye?

Any information you would kindly share is much appreciated.

Re: Sally Bethune M Neal McLeod

I am a descendant of Neil McLeod, son of John and Catherine Fletcher McLeod. I am nearly certain that Neil and his wife Elizabeth Butler McLeod ( from Sampson Co., N.C.) were in Marengo County Alabama in 1830, as I have found Neil McLeod in the `1830 Census. The household just before Neil is a "Catherine McLeod" so I believe that it was perhaps his mother.....some records on ancestry say that she died around 1835 in Alabama. I did not find Catherine in any further census records, but found Neil in 1840, 1850, and 1860. I never knew anything at all about these people except that my great great grandmother was Elizabeth Butler
McLeod (from N.C.) and that she married John J McCorkle and lived in Marengo County Alabama until her death in 1872 (I think), The breakthrough came when I saw Neil McLeod's name in the 1850 census and recognized one of his daughters and then I realized that this man must be my grandfather and then I knew where my great grandfather's name "Neil" came from. He was the first McCorkle to EVER have the name Neil, and one of his brothers named one of his children "Malcomb." I am going to the Marengo County COurthouse in a few weeks to look for any probate records for these people. The courthouse has records from 1819 and they have never lost any of their records. If you are interested I will post any "finds" after the trip. Thanks Kathleen

My Dad is from Dothan, Alabama. All of our lives we have been told that we were related to Ms. Bethune. The spelling of our name by members of our family range from McCloud, McLeod, McCleod. It is believed that we may be related through Ms. Bethune's father. I have tried to get info on her father but have not been able. I live in SC now and I attended the dedication of the memorial for MMB several years ago and had the opportunity to chat with a very old lady who looked exactly like my Dad's family.
My family are Beaton/Bethune, sometimes being born Bethune , marrying as Beaton and reverting back in Census entries. If you pronounce the name Beaton with the accent of a gaelic speaker, a listener, perhaps the local registrar of births deaths and marriages, might think that the speaker was saying Bethune and vice versa, it really dos not sound too different. I have heard the theory that some Bethunes were French but I don't think that was the case, not in the Scottish Highlands anyway. The spelling of the surname was not terribly important to gaelic speaking people anyway - they were more likely known by their nick names, James fair, Effy the orphan etc (this woould of course be in Gaelic, not in English).

Re: Help! Parents of Farquhar Bethune (born 1800, wed Charlotte Lalonde)

Hi
I have recently come across your request regarding the parents of Farquhar Bethune and may be able to suggest a possible connection to get you moving in your quest for his roots. What I am suggesting is fairly tenuous and gives no direct connection. There is an individual called Angus I have been unable to trace possibly because he emigrated. The Old Parish Records are not very good for this period. A generation or two can be missing from the record which leads to frustration.
However not to despair - From what you say Farquhar was 1 year old when he left Skye. This suggests that his father Angus is likely to have been born about 1770. The information that I have gives an Angus b. 1772, a son of Rev. William Bethune of the parish of Duirinish, Isle of Skye. He had 6 brothers and a sister. One of his brothers is named Fearchar which is the Gaelic for Farquhar. Brothers often called their children after each other and this Fearchar for example has 3 sons called after his brothers. Angus being one of them. If you know the names of Farquhar’s siblings or those of his 12 children you could compare them with the following names Kenneth, Christine, Peter, Kenneth II, Angus, John, Fearcher and William. If some of them crop up it should be a good hint of a connection!
I am descended from John who is my grt, grt, grt, grandfather on my grandmother’s side. So perhaps we are related!
I have no information on Angus’ wife. If you can discover the shipping records of migrant ships landing in Canada in 1800-01 you might find the family listed in the ship’s manifesto.
We have then the following ascendancy:- Farquhar _ Angus _ Rev. William _Rev. Kenneth _Rev Dr John etc ...and right back to the early 14th Century (with a few gaps).
I think that you are right in rejecting the suggestion that you are descended from the Rev John. This would be a very strong memory in your family’s folklore if it were the case.
The Rev Dr john was the last of the Beaton doctors on Skye.
Hope this is useful to you.
Regards
From all my research I believe my Great Grandfather James McLeod was the son of John McLeod born 1774(about) in the Isle of Skye and Catherine Fletcher. This John was the son of Neill McLeod and Sally Bethune and they came from the Isle of Skye to the Cape Fear region befor 1783. Neill's will 1818. He died in Spivey Corner,Sampson Co.NC.
John married Catherine 1788 . Does this sound possible to you. My g-granfather James was born 1813 in S>C.
I do not have a spouse for Neill and Sallie's son John. Ophelia McLeod Wright said he had a son named John Washington, but offered no documentation or other information. I did find a John McLeod living in Sampson county in the 1820 census, but am not sure it's the right one. The Bible page I have is for Neill's son Malcolm and it was quite obviously filled out much later. (The copyright date is AFTER the birth dates listed). but here it is. Sorry, it's not a better copy.

my research indicates that Neill and Sallie's son Malcolm was born in Sampson County NORTH Carolina March 29, 1785. This is based on census and tax records. The will is dated 1818 and was probated in Sampson County. I'll be glad to share all my info, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the ulnar nerve in my left arm and hand pinkie and ring fingers are numb, which makes keyboarding difficult. Feeling seems to be returning, but I don't want to push it .. hopefully in a few more days I can get back to work ...

Kay McLeod

Hi PG Beaton. the Beatons in TN are from the line of David & Flora Beaton. They first spelled their name Beaton but later changed it to Bethune. I think the families in TN are from their son Christopher, he seems to have moved to TN along with his two brothers in the early 1800s. So in moving they might have kept the Beaton and not changed to Beathun like their father. I think Beaton might be the way the name was spelled in Scotland, and then changed to an American spelling like so many family names did. you can contact me at: spwhite44@aol.com should you want to talk about the Beaton/Bethunes. sw

Hi lbethune1. I'm the one who started this question about Archibald Beaton/Bethune. If your great grandfather was Archibald Beaton/Bethune, he came down thru the family of David Beaton (later Bethune in records). David & his wife came over in 1774. The Archibald that I am trying to find was in NC in 1753, I have found him in the MARS records at the North Carolina State Archives. In 1753/1754 he was in Bladen County, had received land grants. From 1784 to 1791 he was in Cumberland County, received land grants there (Cumberland County was made from Bladen). In the 1790 Census there was Archibald Beaton, David Beaton (your family line) & Martin Beaton (my husband's family line) All the others went by Bethune. I have been trying to trace who Martin's father was; don't think that most of the information on line is correct...not really sure when Martin came to America (no records on file)even thought people put information on line about when he did. So, for now I guess it will remain an open question on who this Archibald was. I'm heading to the NC Archives next month and will post any information that I find about the family.

Sorry I am late to this thread. My Great Grandfather was Archibald Bethune. We have the family back to about 1000 AD. There are two main strains of Beatons/Bethunes in Scotland: one from Scotland/Ireland and the other from Calais. The Calais Bethunes (in my family) were Norman and came from Bethune in what is now France in 1165 to Edinburgh. Part of the family went to the Hebrides in the 1500 to become a long line of hereditary physicians to the clan MacLeod and others. Whilst there, the name went back and forth. The history in our family is that one part of our clan was already in carolina in 1774 when my direct ancestor arrived on the ship Ulysees on October 18, 1774. Evidently, he did not know how his name was spelled. In his family, both spellings existed though he was no doubt a Bethune not a Beaton. Folks in Carolina gave him that spelling, which was then corrected by family members of the next generation, who did know the right spelling.

If you want anyone to have information for you, you might want to add a little more information to your post. Where was your father born, what were your grandparents' names, the farthest-back ancestor you're aware of, any locations and dates can help.

Help! Parents of Farquhar Bethune (born 1800, wed Charlotte Lalonde)

help! My ancestor is Farquhar Bethune, and I'm trying to find out who his parents were (or at least one of them; anything so I can move further backwards on that line.)

A bunch of people seem to think he's the son of the Reverend John Bethune, but that man's famous and his list of children is public, and 'Farquhar' is NOT on that list.

Here's what I KNOW about Farquhar:

"Angus’s father, Farquhar, was born on Isle of Skye, Scotland in 1800 and moved to Lancaster, Ontario in 1801 as a I year old boy. Farquhar married Charlotte Lelond and they had a total of 12 kids."

What I wish I knew is ANYTHING else. I'd love to believe the Reverend's the dad, but I just don't think there's any evidence for it. I'm pretty new at this whole genealogy research thing-- maybe someone else already knows the answer, or knows how to find it better than me?

Here's hoping, because the Isle of Skye Bethunes were well-recorded enough that if I were to get ONE adult name/dates/spouse of a Bethune ancestor on Isle of Skye, I'd probably have generations of legitimate history to develop from.

Thanks for any assistance!

-Keely
