Hello Sue

I saw your old posts about George and Cecil (Bernays) Harris.
I'm not related to either but I do have a photograph taken in a Mt Gambier, South Australia studio of one of their youngest daughters titled "T Cecil Harris Aged 19" - Theresa Cecil Harris.

This must have been taken before her December 1878 marriage to Phillip Anson Vyner in Mt Gambier. They had two daughters including one named Margaret Bernays Vyner before they went to live in New Zealand (Invercargill).
A late great aunt apparently thought Theresa married a brother of my gggrandmother our family had lost contact with in the mid-1880's. Seems she had confused Cecil with a similar sounding part of his real wife's name!

This photo is one of about 100 I have from 1850's to 1880's.
Only about half are named. Several unnamed ones are of "middle-aged" women and men who I am fairly sure are not part of my extended family.

I think the Harris' were were long time family friends.
My extended family had a large house in Caulfield, Victoria from 1850's to early 1900's - the suburb where the Harris children were born, as well as a sheep station ("Maaoupe") near Penola, South Australia from 1840's to 1940's near Mt Gambier where George was an engineer with the Roads Board from 1866.

I have tried to identify the unnamed one's without any success so far.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

rgds
Neil

Hi Kevin,
Yes, I had heard that there was a bust of Adolphus in Kings College London. There is also one of Lewis Adolphus in the Queensland Parliament I believe. Must try and get up there to see it. We are in Sydney Australia. Whereabouts in the world are you ? I found Marta in my copy of the family tree.
My husband is the 3rd Great Grandson of Adolphus and Martha (Arrowsmith) Bernays. His son Lewis was also educated at Kings College London and ended up in Australia.
Cheers for now
Judith

Hi Sue & Judith,

I'm married to Marta Gutierrez Bernays. Marta is the G G G Granddaughter of Adolphus. Did you know there is a bust of Adolphus in Kings College London? He must have been in his 30's or 40's when it was sculpted. I have a photocopy of a photo of the bust.

kind regards

Kevin

Dear Sue,
Sorry, but the answer is no. It is a portrait of him - a lithograph we think- as a young man. I think it must have come to Australia with Lewis Adolphus as we have a photo of the interior of the sitting room, in Queensland and it can be seen hanging there. We are lucky that my husband's Grandfather, Edwin Bernays, kept two photo albums, and named nearly every photo so we have a few photos of the Queensland family. The oldest I would think would be over 100 years old, as Sylvia, born 1907, looks to be about 4 years old.

We donated these albums to the State Library of Queensland and they have put them on their web site, so you can see them. We wanted to share the photos with everyone.

Getting back to Cecil, have you checked the newspapers for a wedding photo perhaps? I have nothing on her or her family so if you have time, I would love to have more on her.
Cheers for now
Judith

Hi Judith

I just re read your message and was wondering if the picture of Adolphus includes his wife or children. After many years we are still unable to find a picture of daughter Cecil Georgiana Harris ( Nee: Bernays)

Sue

Hello Judith

The family may also be interested to know about Prof Adolphus Bernays wife Marths, she was the daughter of the eminant Hydrographer & Cartographer to the KIng, Aaron Arrowsmith, see on-line for a selection of original works.

Yes i have spent a long time on the Bernays and i do have a picure of the QLD mob, and all their WW- 1& some of their WW2 files, as part of the Harris/ Bernays WW1 involvment, you will probably know about their loss at Gallipoli.

Those files include some hand written notes from Bernays family to AIF re family losses etc..

But have never seen Leopold, and sadly never seen Cecil G. I guess the fact that they were originally named Beer is on the family tree, the info habout that is in the biography about Martha Freud( Nee: Bernay)
'
I also had an email a few years back about GGG Father Adolphus and his involvement with charitable works in UK>

Sue
Sue

Dear Sue,
My mother in law was born Charmian Bernays, in Toowoomba, Queensland. She comes from a long line of Solicitors, her father being Edwin Chisholm Bernays, and her Grandfather Leopold Frederick Bernays. Lewis Adolphus was her Great Great Grandfather and his father as you say was Adolphus Bernays, and his father Jacob Bernays born 18/6/1747 Gross Gerau Germany, who married Martha Walsch in Mainz, Germany. Jacob had a brother Isaak born in 1742.

A relative, Sir Pierre Bernays who lived in Switzerland had the family tree researched and as my husband's mother, Clara Bernays (m s Swan) was a friend and they corresponded a lot, he sent her a copy of the tree for the family.

If you 'google' the names Leopold Frederick Bernays and Charles Arrowsmith Bernays you will find out all about them. Also Lewis Adolphus Bernays.

I have Cecil Georgina born London 30/9/1827 and died Mount Gambier South Australia 3/9/1868 her husband died there 6/3/1905. They and their daughter Mary Cecil sailed in the S.S. Calcutta (the baby died a few months after they landed). But perhaps you know all this?

I have a family portrait of Adolphus Bernays born 1794, however the only other photos I have are of the Queensland family although one does include Leopold Frederick.

Kind regards
Judith
