Bernards of Western NY state

I'm looking for info on my mom's family, the Bernards. I don't know my grandparents first names. My grandmother's maiden name was Knitzel; I might not have the spelling correct. My mom was one of 9 children. They were raised in the Orchard Park area of NY I think. I think my grandmother passed away during childbirth. All of the children were born in the 1910-1925 range I believe. I think my grandfather passed away sometime in the 60's (I can remember my mother getting a phone call). My mom's name was Cora; her siblings were Robert, John, Franklin, Floyd, Edward, George, Anna, and a half sister, Hilda. I'd also like to get in touch with any of my cousins that I know live in the area (or elsewhere). All of the siblings had children with the exception (I think) of Franklin and Anna. My mom had an aunt that performed either in a circus or rodeo; she rode a horse and did trick riding I think. She might have been the aunt my mom got her middle name of Ellen from. There was also an uncle named Luke and he may have still been alive as recently as the late 70's.
I'm hoping with all these names someone will recognize a connection and can give me some help with my heritage. I'd like to know where the family immigrated from and when. And if anyone knows anything about the Knitzels, I'd appreciate help with that as well; I can find little on the name.
Thanks in advance!

Henry Bernard, bio

HENRY BERNARD
Walsh Heritage, ND USA 1881-1981 Vol 1 p. 153

Henry Bernard was born in Maine, Feb 26, 1872 but was raised in Quebec.

Coming to North Dakota he was married June 3, 1901 at Oakwood, ND to Miss Josephine COLLETTE. They had three children: Mrs Whitaker of Los Angeles, Henry L. Bernard of Ross, ND, and Frank P., who died at Pearl Harbor.

Mrs Bernard was the daughter of Octave COLLETTE who had a hotel at the river town of St. Andrews at the formative years of Walsh County, before the railroad reached Grafton. This hotel building was moved to Grafton and was known as the Quist Building.

Bernard started working at the Grafton Roller Mills in March 1901. During the height of production the mill had 1,000 barrels capacity and employed 22 men at 12 hour shifts. When W. C. Leistkow started the mill it had 335 barrel output. Mr Leistkow was mayor of Grafton and the town's first millionaire. When Bernard started, his salary was $60 month and wood was used for fuel. However, it was as a soldier that Bernard attained his greatest distinction.

He joined Company C in May 1898, and the company was immediately mustered into the federal service and trained at Camp Briggs and Camp Merritt, San Francisco before embarking on the transport Valencia for the Philippines, arriving in Manila Bay, July 31, 1898. August 12, they were in the trenches and had their first taste of actual war and the next day they went into Manilla. Philippine natives rebelled and fighting continued for several months, in which Company C played a gallant part. May 12, 1899, in a skirmish near Paete, Isadore Driscall, P.W. Tompkins, A. C. Almen and W.G. Lamb were killed and Tom Sletland was cited for his exceptional bravery in defending the position assigned and guarding the bodies of his dead comrades. John Buckley and Franl Upham died in camp. Only 12 veterans of Company C survived.

"Our greatest thrill," Bernard recalled, "was the homecoming celebration, Oct 2, 1899. Grafton citizens went all out to show us the time of our life. The girls were gay and smiling and I kissed those I liked the best."

---

Margaret BERNARD, m. GAINES, 1600s, VA

Margaret BERNARD was the wife of Daniel GAINES. He was b. abt. 1614 and died Aug. 18, 1682, in Old Rappahannock (Essex) Co., VA. Margaret may have been a widow of a ROUZEE. There is much fonlicting information about Margaret's origins. She is often linked to the BERNARD family of Northamptonshire,England, the family of the well-documented William and Richard BERNARD. However, I have seen no evidence supporting this origin for Margaret. Any clarification or direction will be greatly appreciated. Polly Zashin

The body of an unknown man who committed suicide early yesterday morning by throwing himself under the wheels of an electric car at the intersection of Howard and Thirteenth Streets, was identified in the morgue as Michael Domicile BERNARD, a singer who appeared at various times at the Tivoli and other places of amusement in this city. Recently he had been living in Fruitvale, where he had engaged in greeding Belgian hares and pigeons. On account of financial straights he had been despondent for some time before his death.

San Francisco Call, 5/2/1902

Richard Bernard

I am trying to get any information on one Richard Bernard who would have been in or around Vinton, Iowa - Benton Co. around 1880 +/- a couple of years. He is the father of Bertha Melinda Bernard b. 1882, and husband of Laura Honeywell. Laura and Richard shared a short marriage and were divorced (?) early in Bertha's life. I have not been able to find any trail of this man and I have a great big hole in my tree from this absence of information. Anyone who may have anything please contact me here or via e-mail at above address or p_pabst2000@yahoo.com.
Thank you,

Paul R.
Geneseo Republic (Henry Co., IL) JONES, Fannie death 1883

Geneseo Republic May 11 1883

Mrs. Fannie S. Jones, formerly Miss Fannie S. Bernard, a lady who was raised in Geneseo, and who was here about three weeks since, visiting at Capt. P. H. Sniff's, committed suicide at her home in Rock Falls last Tuesday by inhaling chloroform. She was last seen alive on the morning the deed was committed by a young lady who had spent the previous night with her. Her death was first discovered by her husband and a couple of neighbors about 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Jones had just returned from Chicago and finding the house closed and locked and the blinds down went to a neighbors's to see where his wife was. No one there knowing, he and the neighbor, accompanied by another gentleman, forced an entrance to the house through a window. They found Mrs. Jones in bed, dressed in her night clothing, dead but still warm, and a dish of chloroform under her nostrils. Evidently death had come to her without a struggle. She had been about a year and a half married. No reason for the commission of the rash deed was developed by the coroner's inquest. She left a letter to be made public as follows: "To all who may feel concerned-I am tired of life and I wish no trouble made by any one for this act, as it is my fervent desire and wish and has been for the past four years, but the respect I had for my freinds and relatives, and also for the love of my dear husband, which I love most devotedly, has kept me from this before now. I may be committing a great crome, but I cannot see it in that light, and knowing my own feelings in regard to it, if I am, from my heart, God forgive me."

3 Richard Bernards (England, 1500's-1600's)

As a matter of information, those who believe they are descended from a Richard Bernard might be interested to know that there are three of them. Richard Bernard of Abington, Northants, 1555-1613, was the 12th child of Francis Bernard of Abington.

Richard had several children, one of whom was Richard Bernard who married Anna Cordray of Chute, Wilts. This Richard (1608-1651) was the one who emigrated to Virginia with various headrights, the enumeration of which has appeared in this list before.

Then there was the Richard Bernard (1568-1641) who was a clergyman in the north of England, specifically the area around Lincoln and was known to be a puritan, that is, one who wanted to purify the Church of England. He had a daughter named Mary who married Roger Williams. This Richard Bernard did not emigrate but was known to the people who have become known to us as "Pilgrims."

There is a parish in Bucks called Turvey and in that church there is a brass plaque on the wall dedicated to Alice Chybnoll, wife of Richard Bernard. Since it's a parish church, it is possible that either Richard Bernard born in the 16th Century could have been rector there. Alice was 63 years old when she died. Both Richards appear to have married late and sired families.

I have family group sheets for Richard of Abington (1555-1613) and his son Richard (1608-1651) from a member of the LDS. That would seem to be fairly strong proof of who those people were.

But if anyone has definite information concerning any of these men or their families, I would appreciate a response.

Thank you.

If in any of your research you find any reference to Anna, please let me know. She was may grandmother that I am named after, but never knew. I have nothing to add to any of your research, except that she married my grandfather William A. Wallace in Herkimer NY in 1885. Bless her heart she had to be an extraordinary woman to marry into my family and survive. She died in Mineola NY in 1930. She is listed in census of 1890 &1900 as being born in MA abt. 1865 +/- 2 years. Hey! any leads at all and I will be eternally greatful!
Thomas Bernard Wallace
Tucson Arizona
Franz BERNARD jailed for refusing to answer census enumerator! 1880 news

Hi,

I just posted an old newspaper story reporting that Franz BERNARD of Trenton, Clinton County, Illinois, had been jailed for refusing to answer the census enumerator. Ha! If only all of our census-phobic ancestors had been locked up until they talked! Ironically, I can't find him in any census, anywhere! Guess he held out longer than the census enumerator!
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of the The Ogle County Press newspaper (Polo, IL) dated July 31, 1880, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/franzbernard07311880clintonil.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com
I have no leads other than my grandmother was born in Mass. and that is from an old census report after she married my grandfather (William Wallace in 1885).
Bernard, Albert of Clinton Co., Ohio California

Albert would have been born about and very close to 1886. He had a child Leonard Earl Bernard. Albert's middle name could have been Earl? The mother of Leonard was Golda aughman of Paulding, Ohio. (Golda commonly known as Goldie?) I do not show record of a marriage, however Leonard did take on his father's last name. Leonard was born in 1910.
