Hi, Doug--I'm glad we're in touch again! from our prior emails, I was able to find a lot of information in the land records (which are now on-line through the MD State Archives website).
This reply has thrown me into ancestry.com, apparently, so I don't have the info you put in your post on rootsweb in front of me at the moment. It went bye-bye when I tried to post! isn't technology grand.....If you prefer, you can email me directly at genknit@verizon.net.
I thought that I had found a land record for Luke w/ Catharine's name on it, too, but in a quick search through my files, I was unable to locate it. I did find one that gives Catharine's father, and grandparents, though. That was cool!
Following is the information I have, along w/ my sources, for Luke and Catherine (Pinckley) Bernard and their children. (I'm descended from Grafton; as I recall, you're descended from Permelia.) Here goes:
Luke Bernard m. Catharina Pinckley 25 April 1796
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152.
Margaret E. Myers, Marriage Licenses of Frederick County 1778–1810, second edition, p. 7.
Children:
Grafton, b. 9 December 1796
Obituary for Grafton Bernard, 9 Apr 1880, Fostoria Review, Fostoria, Ohio; The obituary and tombstone give Grafton’s age at death as 83 years 3 months 26 days. This yields a calculated birthdate of 6 Dec 1796, a discrepancy of 3 days from the date of 9 December given in the obituary. Also, Grafton’s sister Sarah was born 15 Mar 1797 according to a parish record. Clearly, Grafton could not have been born in December 1796 if Sarah was born in March 1797. Grafton’s date is more likely the one in error, assuming that the parish record was contemporaneous with Sarah’s birth.
Sarah, b. 15 March 1797, baptized 24 September 1797.
Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church (formerly St. Peter’s Rocky Hill), Frederick County, Maryland, Parish Registers, 1767–1889, p. 60
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152.
Permelia, b. 1797
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152. [note: it is unlikely for both Sarah and Permelia to have been born in the same year, if Sarah was born in March.]
Malachi
d. 1850, Seneca County, Ohio.
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152.
Nancy W. Allred, “The History of Four Generations of the Bernard Family (1755–1944),” 1989; photocopy of typescript manuscript, obtained from Allred, p. 7.
William
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152.
There are records of marriage of Wm. Bernard to Prudence Gittenger 30 Nov 1819, and William Bernard to Anne Otto 28 Dec 1813, but we do not know whether either William is the brother of Grafton; these records were found in Margaret E. Myers, Marriage Licenses of Frederick County 1778–1810, second edition.
Catherine, b. 4 January 1803
Maryland State Society DAR, Directory of Maryland State Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Their Revolutionary Ancestors 1892–1965, p. 152.
In digging through the on-line land records, I found numerous references to all sorts of Bernards. I have reached the conclusion that there were at least two Bernard men with the following names: Thomas, Luke, John, James, Jeremiah, and William. There appears to have been only one Grafton initially, but there are at least two Grafton Bernards in Ohio--and they are not father and son. I have only found records for one Malachi Bernard, as well. Some of these men's dates overlap each other.
I also found the original land patent for a Luke Bernard for Rattlesnake Den, and for Bernard's Desire. This is most likely "our" Luke's grandfather or great-uncle. I found one deed which lists John, Jeremiah, and Luke all in the same deed. And, I found one wherein John Bernard is purchasing land from a gentleman in London. I'm still sorting these records and trying to make them line up chronologically, so that maybe I can start connecting the generations through circumstantial evidence.
So, that's what I have. I really would prefer to correspond via email, because then I have a copy of what I've sent you. I don't know how to save anything on rootsweb or ancestry.com. Hope to hear back from you soon!
Sue.
