Dutch and German sailors to the East

The Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (United Dutch East-Indian Company) was in the period 1610-1794 by far the largest employer of the Dutch Republic, with an estimated yearly work force of 22.550 men. The wages were only half of what could be earned on shore. So sailors were often nor married, except those who came from other countries like Germany, France and Scandinavia. For them the wages were enough to be able to maintain a family. Contracts were signed for five years and only one in three saw in the end their home back.

The following names can be found at: Websilon.nl.
weblinks for Dutch family research

Hello Donna,

Genealogy is a popular hobby in The Netherlands. This in contrast to Germany (which is another country!). There are a lot of portal websites for Dutch family research. Here are a few that are used a lot, but there are much more:

www.cbg.nl/ ((Official) Dutch Genealogical Centre)
www.kwartierstraat.nl/
http://genealogie-opnaam-abcde.startpagina.nl/ (letters abcde)
http://genealogie-opnaam-fghij.startpagina.nl/ (letters fghij)
http://genealogie-opnaam-klmno.startpagina.nl/ (letters klmno)
http://genealogie-opnaam-pqrst.startpagina.nl/ (letters pqrst)
http://genealogie-opnaam-uvwxyz.startpagina.nl/ (letters uvwxyz)

Most Dutch are able to read and write simple and clear English sentences and questions. Elderly people can have more trouble with it.

Good luck!

Marnix Berkhoff.

I was just contacted by Marnix Berkhoff about my family name. As far as I know, my family originated in Liddy, Russia and emigrated to the USA in 1905 or thereabouts.

There are many Berkoffs living in the US - in most major cities. My family lives in the New York City area. I grew up in northern New Jersey. I currently live in Washington, DC

Regards,

Todd Berkoff

Re: Elisabeth Berkhof - Terborg

Today I was in The Hague at the "Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie" (Dutch center for family research) and I found for you the following information.
Elisabeth Berkhoff died at 30-3-1820 in Doetincem, she was at that time 71 years old (so she is born about 1748!) and she lived in house number 86 according to the death registration. At that time she was the widow of Hendrik Willem Otten he died at 30-3-1812 also in Doetinchem.
The clue of the parents of Elisabeth can be found in the appendix of the weddingregistration of their son Hendrik Willem Otten, a shoemaker. He married at 11-4-1820 Hendrina Claver. They were onable to pay the registration of their wedding and according to the law they married "vrij van zegel". This means without paying the registrationfee. Okay now we come to the information you were looking for. In an appendix of the weddingregistration is a declaration of :
1. Corcordius Rensen 78 years old, without profession.
2. Cornelis Berkhoff 65 years old without profession.
3.Jan Hendrik Lucksen 64 years old, tailer.
4.Reinder Hueter(? name was difficult to read), cooper.

The 4 persons declared to have well known Hermannus Berkhoff and Aleida Nusselder who were married and lived in Terborg and died there more than fifty years ago and were burried at the cemetery in Terborg.

In the BBsite (branche Doetinchem from mr. Scholten) Hermannus is known as Hermanus (Alexander) and his wife as Aleida v.d. Nutzelaar. In those days names were not that strict!

albert berkhof 1739. The only possibility is Albert Berkhof baptized in 1702 21-5-102 at Vriezenveen as son of Hermen Berends Berkhof en Berendje Alberts Jonker. Although there were other Alberts 1. Albert baptized 3 november 1700 at Vriezenveen, but his live is known, he died 21 of march 1749, he was maried to Hendrikje Timmer, also known as Boeschen. They had one son Jan born in 1728.
and number 2 baptized 7-6-1711 he was the son of Berend Hermsen Berkhof and Jenneken Berends Fayer,he married Janna Lamberts and they had four children. So it must be the first one. The Alberts in Vrienveen were both linen tradesman according to the information of the local historian Herman Jansen

Erik

In 1754 Jodocus Harmannus Berckhof married in Groningen with Marieke Freriks. In the certificate we can read that Jodocus originated from Lier Oostfriesland (Today: Leer, Ost-Friesland) and that Marieke came from Lier-Oord Oostfriesland. Unfortunately no ages are given. We only Marieke was assisted by her father Frerik Martens.

Who knows where they did live and who their family were?

In 1675 Barent Berkhoff (founder of branch Amsterdam 1) married in Amsterdam Marietje Simons Bon. According the banns he originated from Unna and was 27 years of age. Witness of Barent: his nephew Dirck Boeckenkrot. This surname Boeckenkrot is a rare name in Amsterdam, although it in 1689 occurs when Jan Boeckenkrot bought the citizenship of the city. This Jan also originated from Unna and was registered as surgeon (chirurgijn).

Does someone have the connection in Unna (-area)?
