I am looking for the family history of Sylvia M Benson, born 1906 in Nebraska. Sylvia married Floyd A Helsel and they had 3 daughters, Barbara Jean, Betty, and Belva Ann. The 1930 census shows that Sylvia's father and mother both were born in Indiana.
Sylvia was also married to Ira B Newmeyer (1940 census)
and to Leo Petrick (1941 Marriage record, pennington county Rapid City ND)
Sylvia was my husband's grandmother and we have no history for her at all.

David,
I don't know if you are still active on this site, but I just stumbled on your post below. Robert Benson (147) is my great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather. While his son James is your branch his other son William is my branch. They migrated to NC (not sure if through Maryland), then OH, and IN. If you have more information on Roberts tree I would really like to see.
Chichester Benson, VA NC KY (father of Judith Benson Mitchell)

Chichester Benson, VA NC KY
Abt. 1763-August 1826

Chichester Benson, who reportedly came to America from Ireland or Wales, date unknown. He married “Mary” – last name unknown. Some researchers say that Chichester first settled in Virginia and that he served in the American Revolution from Virginia. A man by that name is listed in the Historical Register, Virginians in the Revolution, Richmond, 1938, by John H. Gwathmey. The American Revolution, also called the American War of Independence, was waged between the American colonies and Great Britain (1775-1783).

If we calculate that Chichester was possibly born between 1760 and 1763 and married Mary between 1781 and 1784, we could conclude that he would have been old enough to serve in the Revolution toward the end of the war.

It is likely he and Mary had their first child within a year or two of their marriage. That would tie in with the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Benson, who married Elias Wood on February 6, 1805, in Shelby County, Kentucky. Betsy was probably eighteen or nineteen when she married which would put her birthdate between 1785 and 1786, making her the oldest (she was named as the first child in Chichester’s will).

One Chichester Benson, who may possibly be our ancestor is documented in Surry County, North Carolina. The 1784-1787 census of North Carolina, Captain Humphrey’s District, lists a Chichester Benson, head of a family consisting of 1 male 21-60 and 1 female. This would seem to be compatible in time and place for our ancestor. Possibly, Betsy was born a year or two after the North Carolina State census was initially taken in 1784.

Tax records in Surry County, if extant, would verify what year he moved into the county and began paying poll or property taxes. It would also prove when he left the county and what year his name ceased to be listed on the tax rolls. Census takers often missed our ancestors living in a county, but tax collectors seldom missed them.

Chichester and Mary (last name unknown) had seven known children (may not be in the correct birth order) – but are given in the order cited in their father’s will:

1) Elizabeth “Betsy”,md Elias Wood,Feb 6, 1805, Shelby Co,KY
2) Judith,(my ancestor) md Joseph F. Mitchell,Dec 29,1807, Shelby Co.;md 2nd: Robert Benson ca June 1819, Shelby Co.KY
3) George Benson, no further information.
4) Zachariah Benson, married Elizabeth (?); moved to Washington Co. IND.
5) Sally, md George Snelling on Feb 2, 1809, Shelby Co. KY
6) Roseanna “Rosey”,md John Mitchell, August 25, 1813, Shelby Co.
7) Ann Benson, md George Tucker, Feb 7, 1827, Shelby Co.

Chichester’s name was first found in Shelby County, Kentucky in the 1803 tax records. In 1805, his daughter, Betsy, married Elias Wood in Shelby County. Other records document that Chichester Benson arrived in the county at least before the August Term of Court 1807, when he was paid for "crying the sale for the Estate of Elizabeth Butler."

The above data was researched, copied, and transcribed from Film 33970, part 2, 259,250: Shelby Co. Wills, page 172, Volume 2, Indexed, by George E. Kimble in Florida from microfilmed records in Salt Lake City, Utah. He stated that lack of time prevented an exhaustive study of the available records, but, however, that this data should provide a basis for further study. Part of his notes follow that included a photocopy of Chichester’s original will, written in 1825, but not recorded until 1826.

The will of Chichester Benson, dated 26 September 1825, recorded August Term 1826, in Will Book No. 7, Pages 168/170, names wife, Mary; children - Betsy Wood, wife of Elias Wood, Judy Mitchell, wife of Robert Mitchell; George Benson, Zachariah Benson, Sally Snelling, wife of George Snelling; Rosey Mitchell, the wife of John Mitchell; & Ann Benson; grandchildren - John, Polly, Thompson and Jonathan Mitchell, children of Joseph Mitchell, deceased. (Joseph was first married to Judith Benson).

In his will, Chichester further provided for his wife:

“whereas my dear wife Mary Benson has been much aid to me in accumulating the property I now hold, & for love I now hold for her, I do therefore give and bequeath unto my said wife, during her natural life, the profits, interests & rents arising from my entire property or so much of it as shall support her in care & comfort for her to live in the dwelling I now inhabit during her natural life, but nevertheless, if she chose not to reside therein, then they, the executors hereinafter to be named, shall rent the same out for the support of my said wife, during her natural life.”

In the Shelby County Court, September Term 1826, on motion of William Bayne, Executor, ordered that James Pierce, Jonathan Webb, Edmund Bull and James Bayne, or any three of them being first sworn, to appraise the Slaves, if any, and personal Estate of Chichester Benson, dec’sd and that they report thereof to Court. Attested by Jas. Whitaker, Clerk.

Appraisement of the personal property of Chichester Benson, October 23, 1826, includes two negro women, Chloe and Patsy. The Inventory and Appraisement was examined and approved by the court on motion of William Bayne, Exectr, ordered to be recorded. The Inventory included 3 horses, 13 head of sheep, 6 head of cattle, 19 hogs, one ox cart, plows, axes, hoes, spade, log chain, carpenters tools, 34 geese and ganders, one rifle gun, kitchen and bedroom furniture, flat irons, loom, grindstone, hay, oats, 75 barrels of corn, one flax brake, one wheat fan, tubs, barrels, 2 mowing sythes, etc.” (Values are given in the original inventory, plus additional items.)

No record has been found as to where Chichester was buried in Shelby County – perhaps on his farm. He would have been between 63 and 66 years old. It is unknown what happened to Mary after her husband’s death, and whether or not she chose to continue to live in her home. Most likely, she eventually went to live with one of her children. An analysis and study of Shelby County census and tax records could possibly shed light on where she lived after 1826.

On, Nov. 1, 2012 after writing this story, I discovered, published in a book at the Tyler Library, The Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 2, No. 3, Apr 1964,the name of Chidester Benson, 17 years old, enlisted in Revolutionary service at Chesterfield, Virginia after 1 of September 1780. In Vol 2, No. 2, his name was again found, saying he was 17 years old, born Caroline Co, VA - and giving his place of residence as Stafford Co, VA - adjacent to Caroline Co. A number of other Benson families were also living in these counties. Now, I plan to order Chichester’s military service record, pension application and bounty land application, if there was one.)

Can anyone help connect this man to Prou Benson and wife Francis? I believe Chichester is one of their unknown sons.
Please help. I am always happy to share all of my information. By pooling info, we solve our puzzles.

George Benson Philadelphia from Scotland

Am trying to narrow down my GGGrandfather George Benson's roots in Scotland. He was born in Scotland between 1823 to 1830 according to Census records which also show him in Philadelphia by 1850 until his death in 1872. All Census records show "Scotland" as his country of origin. His 1853 Naturalization documents also show "Scotland" as his country of origin and his arrival in NY in 1845 but no matches show up.

He is listed as Sailor and Rigger in 1850 and 1860 Census records living in Southwark right near the docks so I suspect he was a Sailor before emigrating to the state.

He had five children born between 1851 to 1865 including Julia, my ancestor, along with James, Margaret, George and William.

I have been able to track William to NYC then upstate NY and the only descendant of his has no information on his origins. James was a sailor and died in the UK in a Poor House. No information on the other children.

Looking for either connections with other relatives or ideas or where the Bensons might have originated from in Scotland.
Hi Malcolm,

I still couldn't narrow it down.

Here is another suggestion, try posting the same question (as much detail you have on him in one post as you can) on the Swedish forum http://aforum.genealogi.se/discus/ (free of charge but I think you need to register in order to post a question). There is a thread there where you can ask questions in English and the people there are very helpful. They may be able to help you out.

I hope you find him!

All the best
Anna

Also Charles's daughter was Emily Louisa (one of those names could have been the same as his mother).

I don't now where coal was mined in Sweden but that could be a clue to the area where they lived

Malcolm Codd

Elizabeth Benson-Peletiah Morrell Warren

Every tree has Elizabeth Benson Warren dying between 1863 and 1897 in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

I found a marriage record in Des Moines County, Iowa (right next door to Henry County, which is her last known residence in 1860). It is between Timothy Heerman and Mrs. Eliza Warren in October 1858. The very next year he marries again.

I'm not sure these are the same people, but there are many names in common that would indicate some kind of family connection back in NY, ME or VT. The names of interest would be: Peletiah, Morrell, Thirza. There may be more.

These names would be first or middle names with the surnames Barter, Heerman, Hanna, and Gray.

Anyone run into these surnames in their research?

Carl Benson/Fern Gordon Clark

Am looking for information on Carl Benson who married Fern Elizabeth Gordon Clark sometime after 1940. Fern was divorced from Charles Samuel Clark and lived in Dunn County Wisconsin. I cannot find any record of her divorce or her remarriage. The Minnesota Death Index has her as Ferne E. Benson born 15 Jul 1905 and died 30 Oct 1990. Mothers maiden name Fuller. So I know this is the correct Fern. She lived in Bloomington Minnesota when she died. Help would be appreciated. Once you nail down who it is and you've got the his details in Sweden it is pretty easy to track down both living relatives as well as further down the line.

Just ping me another note here when you have more information

Good luck
Anna

Hello Anna
Happy New Year and thank you for answering my post. The only information I have on Charles Albert Benson is that he was born around 1866 in Sweden. It is possible his father was Samuel Benson.

He married Mary Jane Kingsbury in Cardiff. Three of their children were Emma Louisa Benson born 1891, Mary Georgina Benson born 1893 and Charles Albert Benson born 1894 - all in Cardiff.
Best wishes
Linda

Their father was Laurits(Lawrence) Peterson Bennedsen/Benson. Laurits was born in Denmark in 1849 and the family lived in Texas. Anyone know who the mother was?

Nancy Chisholm Benson
Indego71067@yahoo.com

Benson in Alabama 1810-1859

There are many who have researched the Benson line of Chilton County only to come to a dead end with Jesse T Benson. Through the Chilton County Deeds records I have put together the following facts and reach out for those more suited to follow up, perhaps getting through the mystery of Jesse T Benson's parentage.

Jesse was born about 1810, in Georgia. He was married to Isabella Cummings on August 8, 1845 at the age of 35. In the Chilton County deed recordings (Shelby County until 1868, renamed Baker County until 1874 when changed to Chilton County), the following have been listed:

George Benson: (also listed residence in Nixburg, Coosa County and Clarke, Coosa County) bought:

Chilton County Sec 5-22N-15E-39.69 Acres, 15 Oct 1835, (Cahaba Land Office)

Chilton County Sec 5-22N-15E-39.69 Acres, 15 Aug 1837 (refreshing the deed on same proerty?) (Cahaba Land Office)

Jesse T Benson:

Chilton County Sec 17-22N-14E-40.07 Acres, 20 May 1841 (Cahaba Land Office)

Henry Benson:

Chilton County Sec 27-23N-14E-80.4025 Acres, 10 Dec 1859 (Tuscaloosa Land Office)

Jesse Benson:

Chilton County Sec 6-23N-15E-126.61 Acres, 30 June 1891

Chilton County Sec 6-23N-15E-0 Acres, 30 June 1891

George, Jesse and Henry all lived in Coosa County and are recorded in Census of 1840. Jesse and Henry together along with Gideon Cummings. Jesse married Isabella Cummings in 1845, at the age of 19. What WAS unnoticed were the property purchases in Chilton County listed below:

Thomas Cummings:

Chilton County Sec 3-23N-14E- 79.5 Acres, 4 Jan 1831

Stephen Cummings:

Chilton County Sec 3-22N-14E- 38.0 Acres, 15 Aug 1837 (Probably Cahaba Land Office)

Chilton County Sec 13-23N-14E- 36.875 Acres, 1 June 1858 (? Land Office)

If any are into solving genealogical puzzles, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Sammy Benson

Re: Descendants of Lawrence Anthony BENSON

Thank you for your reply. There is a more likely death for Elizabeth Maud in 1973 which is on Ancestry but does not appear to be on FreeBMD. But either is possible and there are also some less likely possibilities. Getting a death certificate is certainly a possibility. However getting certificates for all 2nd cousins 2x removed gets expensive!

I cannot find a newspaper notice of the deaths.

There are 8 possible births before the marriage. Of these at least 3 are close together but separately registered leading me to believe there are at least 3 couples of these names around the area at the time. And possibly none of those births before 1921 are mine. So birth certificates would be very much a guess.

I may get a death certificate eventually if no other avenues present themselves.

Thanks again for your reply.

Christine
