James Bennett born 8 Nov 1835 Gawcott, Buckinghamshire, England

Looking for information on James Bennett, son of Robert George Bennett and Hannah Briscow. James Bennett served in the Civil War, married Catherine Rifenberg 13 Nov 1860, and had one child Abigail Bennett(11 Sep 1864) who married Walter Thomas. Catherine Riffenberg Bennett later married James Sampson and is buried in the Decorah Prairie Cemetery near Galesville, WI. Abigail Bennet Thomas died 22 Aug 1943 and is buried in the Galesville Cemetery.

I would like to know what happened to James. He did not die in the Civil War - he was discharged. I assume he died between Abigail's birth and the 1870 census when Catherine and Abigail are listed in John Nicholl's household where Catherine is the housekeeper.

James Bennett is my Great-Great Grandmother's brother and Katherine Rifenberg is my Great-Great-Grandfather's Sister.

I have some information on the rest of the Bennett family and, of course, much on the descendants of James Benett's sister Zilpah Bennett Rifenberg.

Thank you,
Hazel

Would like to know more about Robert Bennet, b. 12/22/1731, most likely in Tiverton, R.I. and died 5/13/1797. Robert married Meribah Cook at Dartmouth, MA on 1/16/1755. They had five children:

Gilbert
Deliverance
Jonathan
Lydia
Ruby

Robert was the second son of Jeremiah Bennett and Lydia Gray.
Bob, I don't see a mention of your names in my ancestor's Bibles. My mom says she was told there were the "uptown" Bennetts and the "downtown" ones. The uptown ones were wealthy and "nare-do-well", and the downtown were the working class. My Bennett's were the downtown ones of course!! This doesn't mean they still couldn't be from the same family, though. Good luck!

James was born 1882 and his mother died giving birth.James married Della McAvoy and died at 40. Sister Lydia raised James. Lydia married Ralf Sloans. Frank married Ruth and had daughter Dorthy.
Hi Carol,
Message said you are related to many Bennett's from Kentucky. This is a long shot. My great grandmother was Effie M. Bennett b.1876 in Kentucky, she was married to John C. Davis b. 1875 in Ky. They had 2 children born in Ky; Rosella b.1897, Myrtle b. 1900. Then they moved to Cincinnati, OH where 2 more children were born, Russell Davis b. 1904 and Gladys b. 1906. The closest thing I can find in the 1880 census at LDS is Effa Bennett b. 1878 in Cadiz, KY to C.H. Bennett and wife Helen.
John C Davis and his wife Effie are in the 1910 census for Hamilton Co., OH along with the 4 children.

Have you checked the Dawes Rolls? There are many Bennett's there. Just type Dawes Rolls into your search engine and it will take you there. Then you can go through the lists of names and tribes. Since you're searching for the Bennett name you might want to try to find out if there is a connection to the Tackett name as well. Also consider researching the Melungian. They were of mixed blood races, including freed black slaves, Indian, white, and others. Many white people were there with their mixed race families on the trail of tears. I hope this will help you. There have been many records destroyed as a matter of course if it was thought that there may be "Indian" blood in the family blood line. I sure do wish you the best! :)

IN, OH, NJ Families

I am researching the Indiana Smith/ Schmidt families that are intermarried with the Hoaglands, Maxwells and Conovers . All in rescent 100- 130 years were in the Vigo Co, IN area and the counties to the south west of IN. In NJ and OH the Conover and Hoaglands are intermarried with the Bennett/ Bennet families. There were Conover Covenhoven in northern Ky in the last of the 1700's and early 1800's that moved on to Illinois. I am interested in William Conover/ Covenhoven that moved on in about 1810 but was in Indiana for a few years. Would like names and places of birth for his children and his wife. Is she a Bennett?

Re: Bennett in Kentucky Knott Why you can't find info.

I have some info for you Bennett hunters... I am the granddaughter of the bennetts and have been fixing up my family tree. I know a major link in the bennett line is connected at Edward Bennett married Tabithia Knott It is a belief of mine that people that married into the bennett family along a line of bennetts would change their name slightly. The reason I believe was linked to Mason families. all the people on the Declaration of independance with exception to about 5-10 married into the Bennett family. An Edward Bennett (not tabithias) came over with a fleight of 43 ships right after the mayflower. I trace some knotts and other relatives back to Buckingham Palace, also a Male Bennett had an affair with the husband of a King (England) The child I believe was raced as the King's son. Back to Tabithia the brain teaser I believe her middle name was Elizabeth born September 19, 1837... Why she and Edward are so important... They are tied to Knox (Like Fort Knox) and other major families such as Kennedy, Watson, ect... Basically her line is the protector of the real identity as how they were believed to be masons. I posted a bunch already through the family tree maker program ... After I realized the Mason thing I stopped posting as much so that I won't piss people off. Interesting fact though... Knights of Templar have ties to the Bennett Family. Bennett family comes from a line of Danish and Swedish Kings, Russsian Kings, Vikings, Kings of Egypt ... King of Kings Line. They are of Viking decent. I believe that that link protects a great deal of information. A lot of the name changes occur around the time of the declaration of independance. It is also important to point out that the first Gov. established in the US was Richard Bennett of Va. Nephew of Edward Bennett with the 43 ships. Many of the Bennett's have names of cities and marriages throughout NC, VA, KY, ect... North Carolina's "Chapel-Hill" is a descendant ascendant of tabithia bennett. I happened to stumble across this also. Bennett's place was were the Revolution ended (conspiracy? or coincidence?) If you think I am off my rocker wait til you hear this one. Back to the knights of templar... One of the signs is a lamb carring a cross, (the moravian church symbol) Wonder why there was 2 salem's...lol... Edward Bennett dropped off his Nephew and his son up North, then came down to Virginia. Thus the split pattern in migration. I hope nobody kills me for opening pandora's box. But I call it as I see it. What is more interesting... I can't tell you that one. Check out these names for links. Watson-Wasson, Yountz-Younts-Younce, Weavil-Weaver-Webel-Wevil, John Washington 1630, Vanderlip-Vaughn-Vaughan-Vanderhyden, Thomas-Thompson, Terrill-Terrell, Ripple-Rippol-Riepl, Rothrock-Rockwell-Rochefontaine, Variations of Reed, Motsinger, Livengood, Vogler, George McKnight, Magnum, Hill, Hess, Green, Haynes, Graves, Frey, Fitzgerald, Fisher-Fishel-Fischel, Evans, Elrod***, Axum-Axom****, Douthid-Toudith-Tousard***, Davenport, Cook-Cooke, Chappell << I will get to that one., Butler, Bishop... That will get you a start. My grandfather said that Lafayette Bennett (which I can't find) was a direct relative. I know that some Bennett's married Indians and were ashamed of the hertiage and gave Christian names (Chappell/Haines/Hanes? was one) It looks as if once the two sets of Bennetts that came split off One North, One south... Interesting I believe that they went to the Carribean for a short time. The Bennett's came back into play at the outer moutains of North Carolina when others were just migrating there. Alot of relatives are found in Texas ... which looks as if it ties into this "hidden" family. Interesting enough there is a Mason graveyard in Texas... No info available. Some Key places that may additionally help... Isle of Wright, Chowan, Pittsylvania, Luncsenburg Va< forgot how to spell recently discovered ties, Caswell, Rockingham, Spotsylvania... BTW forgot to mention the Spanish War going on... Washington had many masons placed in high ranking positions... Thus the migration possibly to texas. Tear of trails may be inter related to the marriage of indians and migration back north?? If you don't have family tree maker, get a copy... its awesome. I started out thinking I would be done with a few generations... I have over 8000 individuals tied in. (Haven't verified them) I will eventually make an excel spread sheet. I always wondered why and how I was so smart... I guess that is the Watson link ... LOL. Any way, I have a new founded goal with the family tree... To figure out what the heck is going on. Anyway, My family tree is theory based so my links on my tree may not be representative. I don't know where it goes when I contribute to the family tree, so I can't give you advice, links ect... I gave some leads to start off with. I found it easier to start with the oldest Edward Bennett came over around 1626, got info from the web, and started going at it. Trace both lines North and south. Send me an email if you find what actually happens, and I will try to keep a post on what I find. Also... Edward frequented sailed between Ireland and England. He was associated with the King. See ya... Maria

Uh-Oh. Now you've gone and done it...
I'm a Bennett and some of the names you've listed are in my history. I'd love to know what you "find". Nothing is "fact" when you want it to be, even if it really is. Just remember that as you work. I'm not sure people want to believe what you've written about here. You might want to remember that too. If you're not supposed to have some info, you won't get it! Keep yourself safe. Good luck. Remember that you're writing about a "waring" history. These things don't just die and go away. You be careful.
