Hi Sharryn.
Saw your message re the Beacalls, and would very much like to help. Do you know whether your Gt Grandfather William was born and died in Australia< and which army he served in -- Australian or British? A relative and I have both done quite a lot of research on the Beacalls. And as far we know, every Beacall on this planet is descended from a family called Beacall or Bewcoll who lived in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England in the late Middle Ages. The first one was a William B. who was born in Shrewsbury circa 1400. They were butchers, and there is a road in Shrewsbury, right next to the prison (!) called Beacalls Lane. Some people like to think the name is French in origin; if so, it was probably Norman French, which annoys me as I think the Normans were a bunch of gangster thugs. Do let me know what you know about your gt grandpa.
Regards, Jennifer

Hi, I've just found this tread doing a search on 'Beacalls'. I live in Beacalls lane Shrewsbury and am trying to gather the history on the house and street.

As far as I know this s the only street in the UK with this name which adds weight to the theory of the family ariginating in the area. I hope this is of some interest to you. if you have dug up anything that may help me I'd love to know.

Hello, Chris -- the Beacalls, from whom I am descended, were a family a butchers in Shrewsbury dating back to the 1400s. As far as we know, all the Beacalls on this planet are descended from this family. They seem to have lived in Fish street, but one bought the land on which Beacalls Lane and the prison now stand, presumably to graze his beasts. Shrewsbury Archives have quite a lot of info about them. If you want to know more, do contact me on my e-mail address.

Thanks Jennifer. That's very interesting stuff. The lane was named for a family of butchers. The 1838 town map shows the land belonging to a Bejamin Benyon, (Benyon St. is just round the corner) He and his brother Thomas were wool merchants who, along with John Marshall (of Leeds) built the Maltings (just down the road) A flax mill which was the worlds first iron framed building, and the prototype for all modern skyscrapers. Thomas's daughter Emma married a Furguson and is a direct ancester of the Duches of York. None of this is of direct relavence to you I know, but might fill in some of the background for you. I would be very interested in any information you have regarding the ownership of the land that is now Castlefields being in the hands of the Beacall family. This fills a part of the history for me at least. many thanks, chris.

My great grandfather was Henry Mortimer Beacall. He lived in Shrewsbury and later Eardington Manor. He ran a tannery in Bewdley Shropshire from about 1900 to 1927 or so. His father was William also owner of a Tannery and resident in Shrewsbury.
Would love to know if this connects to your Beacall family.
