After researching land and other records in Schuyler County, Illinois, I was able to answer the question I posted earlier. The Jacob Bayless who married Mrs. Sarah Ann Rose in Schuyler County, Illinois in 1857 was not the Jacob Bayless who lived in Fulton County, Illinois. The Jacob Bayless who married Sarah Rose lived in Woodstock Township of Schuyler County, where he purchased land in Sections 19 and 20 in the 1850's. He was found with wife Margaret and three children (Jacob, Margaret, and Frederic) in that township in the 1850 US Census. He was also found in that township in the 1855 Illinois state census. The Jacob Bayless of Schuyler Co. IL, his second wife Sarah, and two of his three children from his first marriage are found in Allen County, Kansas in the 1865 Kansas state census. This Jacob Bayless died in 1885 in Bourbon County, Kansas, and is buried in the Bronson Cemetery. The surname of this Jacob Bayless is found variously spelled on records as Baylis, Bailes, Balas, etc. It is spelled Bayless on his gravestone, which also states he was born in 1801 in France.
