I know this is long past when you posted and you have probably found the information you were looking for but I have just started doing this and came across your post. Peter was my great great grandfather. I believe his mother's name was Jane but I don't know his father's name. His son Fredrick was my grandfather's dad. I hadn't heard the story about him giving away a daughter but did hear he accidentally threw all his valuables overboard during a storm while coming to America.

Hi Pat - well fancy that. How far have you got back with
your Baxendales? I am stuck at my ggg grandparents who married in 1783. There are too many Williams and Marys to be absolutely certain so am not bothering.
Don't know whether any of yours were married at Weldbank but
at Astley Research Centre they have 2 files with marriages
from 1856 - 1949. Have discovered loads of mine.
I only noticed the other day that the 1911 census images only were accessible and I have been tediously crawling through the enumeration districts ever since. Will be easier when they are transcribed.
My email address is magsmorton7@aol.com if you would like to have a chat. Nice to hear from you.
Mags
Hi Margaret

Bet you're surprised to find me replying to your posting. I find I'm descended from one, Thomas Baxendale and his wife Catherine nee Nelson. He is buried with his daughter, Mary Blackburn, at Weldbank.

As far as Chorley Cemetery goes, there are no graveyards at Sacred Heart, St Josephs and St Marys, and so there is an RC part of the cemetery.

Best wishes

Pat

I've got Thomas Baxendale marrying Catherine Nelson @ St Lawrence's Chorley 5/10/1834. Same Thomas, I believe, on the 1841 census on Lyons Lane, Chorley. He is living aged 25 (probably approximate age) with his father,John,55, brothers William 20 and Robert 20,John Baxendale aged 6, Catherine Baxendale 25 (nee Nelson?),Mary 4 (my great, great grandmother) and Alice 1. Also Ann Anderton 30 and Joseph Anderton 4 months. On the 1861 census I've got my great, great grandmother, Mary Baxendale 23, described as head of the household, plus her siblings Ann 17, a cotton weaver; Henry 14, a drawer in coal pit, WILLIAM 12, also a drawer in coal pit and Elizabeth 9, a scholar. In addition there was Mary's daughter Ellen. Don't know where Thomas and Catherine were, I lost Thomas until he turned up in the household of his son in law, William Southworth and his daughter, Elizabeth, in Fleet St (bottom of Pall Mall). He died in 1888 in Eaves Lane Workhouse and was buried with my great, great grandmother, by then Mrs Blackburn at St Gregory's Weldbank. Hope this William is your William and that you find more information about him.

Hi Rosemary - Joseph's parents were William Baxendale born abt 1758 and Mary Heys born abt 1762. They married at St. Laurence's 27/11/1783. Witnesses were John Kelet (sic) and Catherine Heys. Mary Heys has been difficult to research and her witness Catherine doesn't seem to tie in with what I found. Funnily enough, a William Baxendale married a Margaret Heys in 1773 I think but still couldn't find anything to connect with her. Like you, I found Charlotte's
mother Elisabeth who married William Southworth in 1817 2 years after Charlotte's birth so that could explain why Southworth appeared as a maiden name.
Elisabeth's mother Ellen Baxendale was a spinster too and she married a Joseph Bolton who was a widower 9/6/1796 at St. Laurence's - about 2 years after Elisabeth's birth. Here again that could explain the use of Bolton as a maiden name. Anyway that's what I have decided to stick with because it is the best I can come up with the explain the 3 maiden names.
I have all but given up on William Baxendale but no doubt they are all related in some way or another. Even though Joseph lived around Pall Mall all his life, I don't think he is buried at Weldbank. There was obviously a graveyard there in 1869 when he died. Someone once mentioned that there was a grave in Chorley Cemetery but I couldn't think why he would be there as he was Catholic.
Charlotte died in Adlington 31/12/1903 and was buried at Anderton St. Joseph's on 4/1/1904/. Strange thing is that I work at St. Joseph's Primary School which is next to the graveyard!!! There is a record of her burial but don't think she had a stone.

Re Ida Caddick from yesterday. Am still looking but searched Margaret J Balshaw who married William Caddick and had Delia. Margaret died in 1904 so William must have married Annie straightaway as John was born 1905. I don't know where Annie came from but John was born in West Preston
mother's maiden name Madden and Susan (Susannah) in 1908 Chorley mother's maiden name Dutton. Ida born at the end of 1909 - mother's name Madden. The other Caddicks my aunt mentioned have different maiden names. Very puzzling!!
Regards
Mags

I had a look in Lancashire Online Parish Clerk and it has these two records:

Baptisms: 19 Jun 1808 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Joseph Baxendale - Son of Mary Baxendale
Born: 15 May 1808

Baptisms: 24 Feb 1815 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale - Daughter of Elisabeth Baxendale
Abode: Chorley
Notes: Mother spinster
Baptised by: O. Cooper

One point of interest is that there is a marriage not long afterwards involving a Southworth:
Marriage: 24 Nov 1817 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
William Southworth - Bachelor of Chorley
Elizabeth Baxendell - (X), Spinster of Chorley
Witness: Betty Smith; George Southworth, (X)
Married by Banns by: Richard Hodgson, Officiating Minister

It is interesting that there seem to be a number of births of Charlotte Baxendales in Chorley at around this time. I wondered if a generation back, there was a Baxendale or Baxendell married to a Charlotte, as otherwise the name doesn't seem to appear. However, I couldn't find a common ancestor for Thomas, John and Elisabeth Baxendale or Baxendell. There is a possible common parentage for Elisabeth and Thomas, in Daniel Baxondale and Ann Taylor, who come from Standish parish, but they did not seem to have a son John.

The other Charlottes were:

Baptisms: 9 Aug 1812 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale - Daughter of Thomas Baxendale & Elisabeth
Born: 18 Jul 1812

Burial: 29 Mar 1813 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale - Daughter of Thomas Baxendale & Elisabeth
Age: 8 mos
Abode: Chorley
Buried by: D. Cooper

Baptisms: 20 Apr 1827 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale - Daughter of John Baxendale & Mary
Abode: Chorley
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: J.S. Master Officiating Minister

Burial: 25 Aug 1827 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale -
Age: 4 mos
Abode: Chorley
Notes: No parents listed
Buried by: J.S. Master Curate

Baptisms: 19 Oct 1828 St. Laurence, Chorley, Lancashire, England
Charlotte Baxendale - Daughter of Thomas Baxendale & Elizabeth
Abode: Chorley
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: J.S. Master Curate

Kind regards,
Rosemary

Joseph & Charlotte Baxendale of Chorley Lancs.

Joseph 1809 - 1869 and Charlotte 1815 - 1903. Lived in
Pall Mall Chorley. They would have married before 1835 (if at all) but cannot find any records. All their children were baptised at Weldbank Chorley as was Joseph himself.
At these baptisms, Charlotte's maiden name is given as either Baxendale, Bolton or Southworth. I have a theory
about this involving illegitimacy and subsequent marriage of both her mother and grandmother. Can anyone shed any light?

Chorley Baxendales

I'm descended from William Baxendale, born I believe in 1848 (= a rough calculation from a census entry which gives his birthdate as 1849, but the BMD didn't have a match for that year) in Chorley. If this is him (got the ref from the Lancashire BMD link someone included in their message) his mother's maiden was Nelson. The BMD ref. is CHO/13/6, but I haven't requested a copy of the certificate yet. Census records show William B was married to Mary Ann Barnes, who was also born in Chorley. Has anyone come across these two?

Hi Ian,

Yes this does help. When my Baxendales first immigrated to Canada they came to Oliver Township, outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. On the previous census was a Richard Baxendale with a Charles and Priscilla (I believe) and my Charles Baxendale had a brother Richard who I can't find too much information on so I was wondering if this Richard was the same and that is why the family came to the same area. I traced Richard Baxendale to Dufferin and did find his death certificate but it didn't comfirm anything but your information does. With Baxendale being an uncommon name in Canada at that time I thought there might be a connection. I can trace my Baxendale line back to William Baxendale, born abt 1793 in Croston and died 1868 in Preston.
Tanna

Richard Baxendale born abt 1833

Looking for information on a Richard Baxendale who immigrated to Ontario with his wife Ellen Unsworth in the late 1850's. He had the following children, Pricilla, William, and Mary who were all born in Ontario, Canada. I would like to know if this Richard Baxendale was born in Lincolnshire to William Baxendale(1793 to 1868) and Mary (1797 to 1872) and the brother of Charles Baxendale and possibly a Philip Baxendale, whom both immigrated to Ontario, Canada. I am decendant from Charles Baxendale but am trying to find out if his siblings also immigrated to Canada.
Tanna

My Baxes originated from Chorley, Lancashire and seemed then to spread themselves about the Leeds area, Armley, Hunslet, Gildersome, Brighouse.

It seems Thomas moved to Wath on Dearne in or about 1890, he's there on the 1891 census listed as Flint Glass Blower.

They did'nt stay long and moved back to Hunslet before 1896 when their 6th child Harry was born ( my grandfather)

I'm going to take a trip into leeds probably next week and get a couple of certs. Hopefully i can then make a connection with yours and mine.
Thanks for that.
I'm sure there must be a link between our Baxes - there doesn't seem to have been many in Wath!
If you are checking parish records records are you checking in Leeds or Chorley, Lancs? If Leeds it is probably Morley not Chorley (no Chorley in Leeds). Where did your Leeds Baxendales live?

I have done a little research on your Baxendales. You're right! The 1881 Census is totally screwed lol I think the enumerator must have been having an off day or he'd had one too many on his rounds lol This happens a lot on the censuses. I looked back at the earlier ones and they all seem to tie in with the 1871 so i would just put it down to experience and move on from there. I think Thomas and Catherine are correct.
Unfortunately I just cant tie in with these yet but there must be a connection somewhere as my Baxes were in Wath for a shortwhile.
I'm still trying to get my head around the Leeds ones at the moment and trying to tie in two Baxendale familes that lived pretty close to each other. I think i know how they are related but need to get a look-up in the Parish Records for Chorley just to be certain.
Didn't see Time Team but will watch via your link after this message.
After I posted my message the other day I had a good look at Thomas & Catherine and Charles & Jane and am left a bit confused. In the 1861 & 1871 census records Thomas & Catherine are there with their 4 children. In the 1881 census Charles and Jane Baxendale appear with the same 4 children (identical names, ages & places of birth)and 2 others. Charles's details are identical to Thomas but Jane is shown as 8 years older than Catherine. Did Thomas change his name & marry again?
These links start in Huddersfield, move to Wath-on-Dearne (where son John William was born in 1861) and back to Huddersfield.
Will go watch time team now!

Some long time since I posted anything!Having had a battle with cancer I've now settled down to research again and I find my previous search was wrong!
My great grandfather's (Harton) parents were Thomas and Catherine Baxendale (nee Mawson). Thomas was born in 1831, Catherine in 1834 and were shown on 1871 census in Huddersfield and 1861 in Wath-on-Dearne wheere their first son John was born in that year. As well as John & Harton there was Joe Manson Baxendale and Lillian Baxendale children.
Anyone linked to any of the above or can go back from Thomas?

There is no other information available - only what I have posted online.

You might want to try other resources, i.e.:
Institute of Regional Studies, Fargo, ND

They have a website online with alot of genealogy, biographies, etc. Not sure if Baxendale is listed but you just never know.
