There was an Ella C BATTS born in 1862 to John Edward BATTS and Martha Jane MYERS. She is listed with the SHIELDS in the 1870 census. Martha Jane died in 1869. Perhaps John was unable to properly care for a little girl. Ella died in Texas in 1923. I hope this helps your quest. You may contact me directly if you wish ( jonestb3@mindspring.com ).

I am writing the history of the Batt family of Ireland from the time we arrived from Cornwall, England in 1649.
In the 1950s I heard a story that a Batt had signed a document adding the comment. 'If they want me they know where to get me! Sounds like a Loyalist Statment?
there must be more information on the McCall family?
Why was Loyalist widow Catherine Batt allowed to return from Ireland to Philadelphia? Sounds as if her family had enough influence to withstand the occasion.Should appreciate insights into the life and times. Rgds Leopold Batt, Dublin Ireland.

I'm familiar with the Ava Gardner connection; when my dad was alive, he told me that there was a family connection. A genealogical account I read about William Gardner (as an ancestor of Ava Gardner) identified Edwin Gardner as the witness to William's marriage and the author presumed that Edwin was William's brother - however, I haven't found evidence substantiating that relationship with certainty. If not a brother, it is highly likely there is a close family connection. Thanks for the info and links.

I am a descendant of Jeremiah Batts and Elizabeth Williams of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. They later moved to Tennessee. For more information see the Batts page on my website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irishgirl/...

Ava Gardner was a descendant of Jeremiah's brother Bailey Batts, Bailey's daughter Cynthia married William Gardner. I do not know any more about her Gardner ancestry, but here is a chart showing the Batts connection:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irishgirl/...

Jim, I was directed to the photos of Joseph Sire and Ann Eliz Batts Gardner on the AncientFaces website which brought me back to Ancestry.com for an email link to you. I feel VERY strongly that my Gardner line is connected to your Wilson County Gardners. Originally these Gardners were in Edgecombe County and then became part of Wilson Co when it was established. I saw that your Gardner relative, Joseph, was from Wilson County and married a Batts woman. You probably know there is more than one marriage between a Gardner and a Batts. My Gardner ancestry goes back to Edwin Gardner b Abt 1797. He is in Edgecombe Co marriage records for his last 2 marriages. Simeon/Simon Gardner was a witness for one (Simeon and his family are found later in Wilson Co census records) and Edwin was a witness for the marriage between William Gardner and Eliza Batts in 1828. He married #1 Priscilla Cobb (no marriage record found), #2 Matilda Darden #3 Clarenda Edmonds. Edwin sold property and left NC in the early 1830s, stopping in Alabama for a few years, then on to Louisiana. Edwin had a brother named James B. Gardner and two of their children (first cousins?) married; they are my g-grandparents (Joseph N. and Priscilla Susan Gardner). James B and his line migrated to Georgia around 1840s. To avoid making this email any longer, I am very interested in the info you have on the Gardners of Wilson (Edgecombe) County. I know there is a connection, but that far back it has been hard to identify the connections with certainty. Feel free to contact me at "pat6@flash.net" - and thanks for any help you can provide. Pat Gardner

Laura,

Have you had any success on your search for William's father?

I am beating my head against the same wall. From what I can tell, there were two Batts in the colonies in 1667, Thomas and William. Thomas was the one that discovered the eastern continental divide with Robert Fallam in 1671. It looks like he married Mary Rudolph and had 5 children but only one son. His name was also Thomas and was born in 1660 and died in 1691. My records show our ancestor, William, being born in 1691 so it is possible that Thomas is the father of our William.

I have only found one daughter mentioned for Henry Batts.

If you find out anything, please let me know. I will keep you informed as well.

Robert Batts
majorbatts@hotmail.com

This is the correct William Batts. Walter Batts is my Grand
father. There were four children of this marriage. My Father
was Arthur Franklin Batts. He was born at Bridgeport,Texas.
I did not have any kind of information on the Batts side of
the family until I sent for a copy of the social security
record. I was from it that I got the names of his parents.

I had had it several years and had just not done much on the
geneolgy and then when I was out on disibality I started do
more research. Collins Aug 12, 1888.
Erath Co, t5exas is just a few miles from Stephenville, Texas. I am glad be are finally putting some of the puzzle
pieces together.
I have wondered If she started spelling Katherine with a C,
that is the only way I see the M C She divoriced William Batts June 9, 1899. There was only one child from this marriage a Walter Leander Gains Batts whom was my grandfather.
William P Batts was married to Matilda Linnie Katherine Roberson, her mother was Prudence W. Rainwater which is suppose to be a full blood Cherokee Indian.
I am tring to decide if this is the same William that was married to Cassabdra Butler which is the mother of Ida Leona Batts

I did go to the Duffa Cemetery last summer and found the gravesites of
Prudence W. (Rainwater} Roberson. If you find anything else
please contact me.
Thanks

The Major Thomas Batt we are referring to I believe was married to a Catherine McCall. I got this information from another site and right now I am not infront of my notes. From what I remember, her mother's name was Lydia Abbot and her father's name I think was John McCall, but I am not sure of his name. The person making the entry was a Linda Ashton and Ashton is the name that survives from her Thomas Batt. The dates of the marriage match in both records. If you read the Catherine Batt of Pennsylvania Memorial on the Loyalist Institute site, two children were mentioned, but no names. Unfortunately, Linda's line mentions only one child from the marriage, a Moses Batt. Also if you Google Major Thomas Batt one of the links mentions the Thomas marrying Catherine McCall. Catherine Batt was from Philadelphia and she died in 1793-4. I have yet to go into the City to search out the death record, if one exists. On the death record, her father and mother should be listed. I got the information about her dying in 1793-4 from my cousin in Dublin. Sorry I do not have more information for you. If I find the site on Google I willget back to you.

Hi MtBaldy101,

Mt name is Marty Smith and I am a descendent of that major Thomas Batt. he was a Loyalist and he came from Ireland. Our family originally came from England. Our ancestor came as a soldier in Cromwell's army to "teach the Irish a lesson" after the English Revolution. Cromwell was broke and paid his soldiers with land he "took" from the Irish. Most of the soldiers sold the land to wealth protestant land barrons, but my ancestor stayed and married into the Irish. He settled in New Ross. One of his ancestors migrated to Belfast and amassed a fortune. Today, most of our family are of modest means and live near Dublin. The Batt family in the US came, first with Maajor Thomas Batt in the 1770's and again at the turn of the 20th Century with my grandfather and his 1st cousin. We are in Denver and in New York. You might check out the Loyalist Institute site and look up the Catherine Batt Of Pennsylvania Memorial. There are specific details of his doings during the Revolutionary War and in Nova Scotia where he was killed. There is also another site which gives us a report he made to Gen Gage about a battle he fought.

Thanks so much for looking. I have one more to try and that is Tomas Batts, born 1836 somewhere in Alabama. At least that is what is thought. I know nothing of any other children, wife or any other details. I have only found one reference to him as Richard's father and the spelling was without the 'H'. Thanks again for looking.

I am looking for parents of William Batt, a Loyalist who was captured at the Battle of Saratoga and imprisoned on the ship JERSEY in New York harbor (American Prisoners of the Revolution: Danske Dangridge) After the war William went to Vermont and married in to a very revolutionary family, the Goulds.
They were still in Vermont in 1806.

Any info on parents of William would be most appreciated.
Ev Whitbeck

My Great Grandmother was Martha Batts, born 1852 in KY. She was married to James W. Mullins of Water Valley, Graves Co., KY. A family member said that her father was Geroldus Batts. The 1880 census said that her father was from NC, and mother was from KY. And, that her mother was Nancy Johnson.

On some sites I've seen Elizabeth "Betsy" Joyner, or Elizabeth Knight (who's mother was Keziah Newsome). And, in some historical paper online, Geraldus Batts from Edgecombe Co., NC had several illigitmate children from Ms. Joyner, but their names got changed to Batts, later. Martha was one of them. Unless there are two different Geraldus Batts! Another site said he was from Wilson Co.

Can you help? Most of my Mother's family came from Water Valley, Wingo, or Hickman (don't know if that is County or city of Hickman).

This is in addition to post of 1/16/09.

The 1870 Limestone Co, Ala. census has him listed as Edward Batts, married to Mildred with 3 minor children. Jackson age 9, Lucy age 5 and Oscar 5 months. John Christopher always went by "Jack." So there is no doubt but these are the same people listed in the family.

Information has been put forth that the children of John Edward and Martha Myers had been placed with other people after the death of Martha. Examples of proof offered were that Ella was in the Shields household and Lucy was in the Christopher Myers household. She could have been visiting her grandfather when the census enumerator came by and was listed as a resident. Since Lucy made the 1870 census twice, I prefer to believe that John and Lucy were the only children of John Edward and Martha Myers and they were with John Edward and Mildred a year after they were married.

In addition, the mariage records in Limestone Co. Ala. Archives states Lucy was married in the home of Edd Batts and Ella was married in home of George Batts.

If you have recieved any information showing closer conection of John, Lucy and Ella, I would appreciate you sharing it with me.

This info rmation is what I have on John

This information is concerning John Edward Batts who died in Arkansas in 1914 at the home of son Judson James. His father was John H. Batts, born 1811. He was married to 3 wives. The 3rd wife and the children of the three are listed in the 1860 census of Limestone County, Alabama. Probably the reason you could not find them is they are listed as John H. PATTS. Note that there was a James listed in the census which might account for the lore that John used name of James sometimes.

His father was Benjamin Batts born 1786 and died in 1834. He was married to Sarah Hicks Rainey (b late 1700s, died 8/12/1850)They had 13 children.

His father was John Batts , born 1717 and married to Mary Warren.

His father was William W.Batts,Sr. born 1691.

This information has been gathered from several locations over the years.I do not have documents to cover all of it but am comfortable with it for my use.

I descend from the Batts-Myers branch and agree with you that there were only two children,John C and Lucy. Ella was married in the home of George Batts.

Thomas Batt was an officer in the Royal American Fensibles who died in Nova Scotia in 1781. We have been told that Ida Leona's mother was full blood Indian, but unable to verify the fact, or verify her mother's name except for the name "sis" as mother and "will" as father in my uncle's baby book. Do you have proof that Cassandra is Ida's mother?
I have the copy of W P Batts marriage to Mrs. M. C. Collins, dated April 18, 1889- (is this your Matilda?) do you have a copy? Where is the Duffa cemetery you mentioned? Thanks again! Donna

According to the information I have from Tim Sears on William P Batts, he shows child of William and Matailda to be Walter Leander Batts 1890-1964 married to Ruby Cecil Bird 1892-1978. They had daughter named Cora Lee. Does this information match yours?
If this is the same William P Batts, we related through him. He is my great great grandfather. His daughter Ida Leona is my great grandmother. Walter Leander would be Ida's half brother .
Do you have any proof on Cassandra Butler? By the way, it's very nice to meet you. I live not far from Stephenville. Donna
