BASTIN's from Devon

My great-great-grandfather was Thomas Bastin, who came to New Zealand in the mid 1800's. I have a birth certificate for him, born in 1862 to a Charles and Elizabeth Bastin.
Census records show a Charles Bastin (aged 76) and Elizabeth Bastin, nee Avery (aged 32!) in 1871. Bit of an age gap, but I suspect these are my great-great-great-grandparents.
Finding anything about these two is quite difficult from this side of the world. I would truly appreciate any help offered from anyone in the UK.

Hi , i just came across your post as i was searching myself for further lineage. I believe we are related. My father is john henry basting, son of gertrude and john willliam basting, decendant of john basting from hungary. I would like to exchange information. My father, born in chicago in 1938 and his oldest sister margaret are still alive, his sister (my aunt) geraldine stone basting and his brother charles (chuck) alex basting have passed. I noticed some of your info is mixed and can help with data. Are you the daughter of charles basting (who would be my fathers uncle?) My father has great recollection of family members. Hope to hear from you. Ann basting Nelson

Thomas Bastin (1745-1817)

Thomas Bastin's descendants qualify for membership in the DAR according to their website. According to their listed sources, he performed "Patriotic Service" in NC. They list as "proof", Pruitt, Abstracts of Land Entries Caswell Co., NC, 1778-1795, P41, #516; and NC Land Grant, entered 22 July 1778. I have requested copies of this from various libraries without success. Is there someone on this board that would be willing to copy these 2 pages, scan and email them to me? According to WorldCat.org, the nearest locations with libraries that have the item include: Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. I would be so grateful for your help.
Kathy T.

Thanks for your reply. I am still seeking parents & siblings for Cora. I have John Youngers's parents as Reuben Absalom Farmer & Virginia B. who was also a Farmer. I have John Younger's siblings if you need them. I also have that Gertrude marr Eunie E. Jordan 18 Jun 1905 & that he was the son of Thomas Jackson Jordan & Euphemia Farmer. The only child I have for Eunie & Gertrude is Cassie b abt 1906. She marr Otis Loving son of Willie F. Loving & Kanawah Farmer. Do you have any more children for Eunie & Gertrude? Also seeking children for Otis & Cassie.
Thanks, Ollie

Cora Bell Bastin was my great grandmother. According to the 1860 census she was 3 years old and living with Eldred Boughan in Sparta, VA. I don't know if her parents were deceased at that time or what. I have a list of her children when she was married to my great grandfather, John Younger Farmer. My grandmother, Gertrude Harris Farmer Jordan was their daughter. I haven't been able to track alot for Cora Bell and John Younger Farmer. I do know that they are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling Green, VA. Do you have anymore info on them?

NS Bastion/Bastian/Bastense/Bastin 1860 US Census IL

Looking for 1860 US Census in Coles Co. IL for Nicholas Schermerhorn Bastion (b. 1808 NY). Usually shows up as NS, once as US. Surname can be Bastian; in 1865 IL state transcription is Bastense. Some descendants use Bastin. Makes tracking him difficult. So does the fact that he moved around, a lot. In 1859-1864 he was pastor of Christian (Disciples of Christ) church in Shelbyville, Shelby Co. IL. But Nov 13, 1859, son N.S. Bastion jr. b. Matoon, Coles Co. IL Since as a pastor and revivalist he traveled, he may have been in Coles Co. when the 1860 Census was taken. I can't find him anywhere. Someone has told me that in Ancestry, there is one image of 1860 Coles Co. that won't come up. It is remotely possible that this page includes the Bastion family. Does someone have an alternative source of the images, and can check for me, please?

Since I only have him for 1850, 1854 (in IA), 1865 (in Alton, Madison Co, IL), 1870, and 1880, and he died in 1884, any additional data points are important.

The family should include

NS Bastion 52 b. NY
Eunice (usually mispelled)32 b. OH
Jennie (sometimes Jane) 8 b. IA
Myra (sometimes Mary) 3 b. IA
NS jr (sometimes US) infant b. IL
maybe others--if so, please include

Please give me the URL, if possible, so I can get a copy for my files.

Many thanks
Doris Waggoner
Seattle

Yes, I think my father Rod Basting was in communication with a Basting (male) in Chicago years ago, but I think that Basting passed away. We do not know if he had children, we have been looking for the Basting descendants becuase I am the only female Basting that lives from our family. I would love to find out more, is this John Basting your grandfather?

I emailed my father for more information, but he is also on Ancestry.com too. You can look at our family tree online to see if we are the same descendants.

I will talk to my father more and maybe have him reply as well.

Thanks,
Danielle Basting

Phyllis,

Re your BUIS/BASTIN family research. I have very little infor. about Buis family.

Zerelda Bastin was a sister of my grandmother Susan Craig Bastin who married George Taylor Williams. Have much research on the Bastin family both in Lincoln/Casey Co., KY as well as Caswell Co., NC. Let me know how this procedure works and where you would like to begin. Look forward to your reply.

Alexa

If there is any information I can help you with please let me know. You can email me at danniib44@hotmail.com. I also have our family tree on this website if you haven't already looked. Do you still live in Switzerland? I actually live in Washington State (North-West of US) but my father told me there were some Basting's that lived in Chicago but I am not sure if they had any children?

Hello Danielle,
wow - that's a complete success for me to find somebody of the Basting-family! John Conrad Oswald was the brother of my great-greatgrandfather - one of three brothers (and a sister) who all emigrated from Oberaach/Switzerland (my birth place) to Minneapolis. I have pictures, letters, newspaper articles and obits of him and his family. (also a pedigree of his wife Lisette Scheitlin) My grandfather often told stories about his famous senator-uncle in America and now I am searching more information and his and his brothers descendants. I am writing a family tree and also a little Oswald chronicle. If you want, dear Danielle, we can share the things we have or know. Are you interested???? Are you also living in Chicago? Today I am quite busy. I will write you again when I have more time.
Best whishes from your 'new happy cousin' (...) Beat (male!)
Hope you understand my Swiss English.....
