Lemuel Bassett the father of this Jared Bassett, was born at Southbury, CT Oct 18, 1788 and died Dec 12, 1874. He was the next to youngest child in a family of 10 children. The prospects for a young man on the stony soil of CT just at this time (we think he came to Seneca Co., NY in 1810) were not alluring, and he and 3 of his brothers turned their faces westward to the rich virgin soil of NY state. He walked to and from CT several times to court Julia Bennett dau of Ebenezer Bennett and Anna Beardsley. Lemuel Bassett and Julia Bennett were married June 9, 1817 probably in Litchfield (New Haven) Co., CT. Jared was the 4th of 7 children born to this union. Source: A Bassett Book by Wheeler A.
