I recently started my family tree. Joseph Bartnik is my grandfather. His daughter, Dorothy, married Eugene Wilcox 26 Nov 1940. Eleven days later he was drafted. After WW II, they briefly lived on a farm and then bought the house at 734 Burke Avenue, Grand Rapids, that Joseph built, for $2.500, and the proviso that Eugene would build him and apartment in the attic and also build an indoor bathroom. My dad did these things and he lived with us until his death. He sat on the porch and told all the neighbors that his son-in-law was ruining his house all the time my dad was building these changes!

I have a wedding picture of Joseph and Sophia if you would like to see it.

Sue Wilcox

Hi Mary Kelly,
We met at you moms house a few years back with Paul and Harry.
I am just starting into genealogy and found a cousin on my fathers side Tom Jachim.
He sent me a wealth of information about that side plus some of the Bartnik side. I'm sure you have the scant knowledge that Jacob Bartnik's parents were Augustine Bartnik and Anna Sczecina. Both born about 1864. Thats all I have so far. If you have more please send it along.
Best wishes,
Tom Wojtas

Hi,
I am researching my great grandparents. My great grandfather was Lach and his wife's last name was Toczek. I believe they came around 1909 as well to Allentown, PA from Galicia, Poland/Austria. I found a 1920 Census and they lived with other family members with the name Toczek as well (which was spelt wrong) and its making me wonder if my great grandmother came with some of her family or just coincidence and it was another family all together.

Sorry, just getting back on Ancestry.com since it is free until Sept.
Wondering if we are related. I would be interested in speaking to you, if you know that Jacob Bartnik, son of Augustin, and brother to 6 other siblings from Poland are also your relatives. I still have a feeling some of the info I was given about last names, may be names of cities in Poland.

I think I can help a little with Adam's information. FamilySearch.org has indexes for Polish records in the area the families were from as well as Grand Rapids. If you search for Adam Bukala you will find a US draft registration card with his DOB, Sept 17, 1888.

Using the birth year and searching for Ada* Buka* you will find these 3 records: http://bit.ly/LCwjf7
The baptism date is a few days later as is to be expected. The surname is frequently transcribed as Bukata because of the slash in the Polish 'l'.

The surname of the mother is not Jaskowicz. House# 63.
5 records come up for children with the Joannes "Bukata" father & mother Maria in house #62. Also a 6th record comes up for father's surname "Bukats". Several spellings for the mother's maiden name.

Is Adam a child of an earlier marriage? Or was the record too difficult to transcribe correctly? Maybe getting the microfilm to review would clear that up.

If you search for Adam Bukalla a passenger list comes up showing Adam going to Grand Rapids, to an uncle Augustus? (Probably Augustyn) at 315 Diamond Str. Arriving 28 Jul 1903.

I hope this provides you with some useful information.

Chris
Thank you. It is very likely that Daniel was a grandchild of Anna & Adam. I do not have documentation. However, Anna's obituary stated that she had 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren at her death in 1976. Not all of them would have had the Bukala surname: One married daughter lived in Illinois; 2 married daughters in Grand Rapids, and two sons - John & Harry. (3rd son Edmond was not mentioned).

In 1930 this was this was the only family in Grand Rapids in the census with the Bukala surname. I located Adam on a passenger list in July 1903 (as Bukalla). His hometown appears to be either Donebic or Dombic. Destination: Uncle's (M? Augustin) home in Grand Rapids at 315 Diamond Str. A widow, Augustyn, is found on Diamond in 1910. Diamond is also the street where the Syrek family lived. Anna's sister Hattie married Joseph Syrek & lived on Diamond.

Thanks again. This had a little more information than I had found before.

Chris

I am researching the family of my great grandfather, Stanislaus Bartni(c)k who came from the Zasow/Zassow Parish in Poland near Debica to Grand Rapids MI. His wife was Katherine Kieras. They had 10 children:
Mary - b. in Poland, I found her baptism record, married Joseph Rusmus/Razmus
Frank - b. 1889, the same year the family came to Mich. died unmarried.
Hattie - married Joe Syrek, 4 children
Anna - married Adam Bukala - 6 children
Julia - married Anthony Kopczynski, 1 son, d. 1990
Josephine- married Frank Kopenski
Andrew - died single
Louis - died single
Joseph - married Thelma Hunt, one son
Rose - married Peter Stawasz

When Katherine died her obituary said she left one brother, but did not name him. Her parents were Frank Kieras & Maria Cichon. I am sure my information is incomplete & am hoping someone else can connect.

We are linked to Manlinoski, Miller and Hank Brandenberg (Katryna Bartnick had his baby out of wedlock) but kept baby and her maiden name. We could possibly be related, as Augustin Bartnick had 6 children all born in Poland. You could write Tony Bartnick who is 78 and knows more than I.

thank you so much for your response. I have been doing a search on the name Toczek, my grandfather, and his wife was Starzak, she was born in 1889 and came here in 1909 I believe from the Ellis Island site, and I believe traveling with a relative named Lach. When I saw the name I decided to give it a try. I appreciate the information you posted, I will file it away and maybe down the line something will click. Thanks again.

Barbara,

The info I have on Joseph is sketchy ... but according to his obituary he had one brother & one sister who survived him. They lived in Poland. Their names, and where in Poland are not stated. No deceased members of the family are mentioned. Joseph died Apr 9, 1953 in Grand Rapids, MI. He was buried there:
WASHINGTON PARK CEMETARY transcription
Starzak, Joseph (Father)
b. 1883; d. 1953
on lot with Sophia L.
Starzak, Leo
S1 US Navy World War II
b. 1925; d. 1976
Starzak, Sophia L. (Mother)
b. 1892; d. 1947

I now have a copy of his & Sophia's marriage license. It states he was born in "Austria Europe" (same as it says for Sophia who was born in Zassow Parish) and that his parents were Albert Starzak and Cora Swierkus. Witnesses were John Wallin and Frances Szezerba. I have found a Szezerba near some of my family in the 1910 census. Friend or relatives, I do not know.

If these seems like a connection for you, I will look at a couple other things for leads.

Chris

Chris,
I do not think our Jacob Bartnick is a relative. He did not have any sisters by the name of Sophi. I do know there is another Bartnick Grand Rapids that was also inquiring with e a couple years ago about Stanley also. His name was Brian Kelly Bartnick and his email is darkmatir.com You could try checking in wih him also. My grndfather did have a brother named John though, but from what info we have gathered, he came to the Unived stated, possibly Pennsylvania only for a couple years, and then returned to Poland and died ther after WWII. I do know if he married or not. We think he lived back in Poland with his father, Augustine for a while! Does this help at all?

Would a daughter, Sophia, be one of the other female siblings? I find a John Bartnick, father-in-law (age 78) in the household of Joseph & Sophia Starzak - Grand Rapids, Mich, 1930. I am looking for John Bartni(c)k who came to the Grand Rapids area, had a brother Stanley & sister Eva - from the Austria/Poland area. Using his age & year of immigration (1890) I think this may be the correct person. We believe that Stanley & his wife Katherine came first (1889) then John. The brothers then sent for Eva, but at least one other sibling (Sophia) remained in Poland.

Mary,

I believe you are correct about the 2 Bartnik families not having a connection - at least a direct one. (Brian is my brother). I have been able to find all of Stanley's 10 children & spouses, some children. His sister Eva's marriage (Koszarski) and children. But nothing on their brother John (who descendants of Eva tell me married "Margaret").

I may have "your" Jacob's "Declaration of Intention" re: citizenship. It states that he was born Aug 24, 1879 in Suwalki Russia - was 5' 6" tall, 140 lbs, blond with grey eyes & was living at #6 Frenchman Ct. Grand Rapids MI. Entered the US from Antwerp Belgium on the vessel Vaderland. If this seems correct I can scan and attach the document here for you.

I am struck by a couple coincidences. Although the states are not where I know of my Bartnick/Bartnik relatives taking up residence... Stanley, John and Eva Bartnik were all siblings who came from Poland to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stanley was my great grandfather. All I know of John is that he was born in Poland and his wife's name was margaret. I do have some other information re: this family & from their parish in Poland.

Bartnik - Starzak

Looking for more information on this family, or to share what we have found so far:

Sophia Bartnik (Bartnick), dau. of John Bartnik of Poland, married Joseph Starzak, Grand Rapids, Mich. According to her obituary she was survived by her husband, 2 sons (Leon & Frank) and two dau. (Louise Groen & Dorothy Wilcox).

More info on this family is found in the PGSA online records from Jastrzabka Stara & Zasow Parishes. John had at least 1 sister (Katherine) and perhaps another also named Sophia that we believe remained in Poland. Another sister, Eva, followed her brothers (John & Stanley) to Grand Rapids.

We are looking for more information on John (wife: Barbara Pyz) & whether he had other children, and on the siblings that remained in Poland. Also information on Stanley's children & grandchildren. We have identified the 10 children of Stanley (& Katherine Kieras): 6 dau. & 4 sons. 2 born in Poland the others in Grand Rapids. Katherine's obit says that she was survived by a brother, but he is not named - since his home is not named we believe he may have been one of the Kieras in Grand Rapids.

Daughters married names: Bukala, Kopenski, Kopczynski, Ruzmus/Rasmus, Stawasz, Syrek. Only 2 sons married - Joseph (my line) and Frank. However, we have not found the name of Frank's wife or if he had any children.

Thanks for your reply. Richard was in my Army unit, 388th Evacuation Hospital, at Camp Atterbury, Indiana in 1950-52,and was from Toledo, Ohio, according to a roster we have from that time. We have no further info on him. We have had several reunions of our Army unit, of which I have been Chairman, and that is the reason we have been trying to locate him, as well as others, if they are still living. He would be approximately 70 - 80 years old. Some of the people from Toledo were members of activated National Guard or reservists and so may have been older than myself (73). Capt.James Corbley, who still lives in Toledo, was one of our Commanding Officers and was reactivated in 1950. Perhaps Richard might have been a relative of your grandfather. Thanks again and please let me know if you find out anything further on Richard.

I have very little info on my grandfather, I believe his first name was Basil but may have also been Vasily, he was from the Ukraine and married my grandmother (Anna Fedodova) in the late 1930's early 1940's and was believed to have died during world war II in 1941.
