Many of the Barr's below Jackson are desendents of Umphrey Griffin Barr (UG) who was named after Humphrey Griffin of Nansemond, Virginia. Umphrey was born in Jasper, GA in 1831. His father Isaac was born in Gates County, North Carolina along with his uncles William, Britton, James, John Wright and his aunt Nancy. His grandfather William died in 1823. Isaac and his son UG moved to Pike Co., Alabama where the extended family settled. UG moved on to Choctaw Co., and then to Smith Co., Mississippi. Much of that family now have their roots in Raliegh, Magee, and Mize Mississippi.
