I have very little on Charles Bernhardt, but here it is:
The birth records of my grandmother (Minnie/Lois, sibling of Jessie) were destroyed in a fire. However, she wrote that her great grandfather was named Charles Bernhardt & came from France but her father (also named Charles Bernhardt) was born in the US & that her aunt (her father's sister) Alta Van Deventer had traced her family back to the French revolution & the family name was originally Duc de Bernhardt. The elder Charles married Elizabeth Campbell & they had ten children; her father Charles was the youngest and named for his father, others included Alta and George.
My mother wrote of the second Charles Bernhardt that his family had been French refugees, he played the violin & died of TB when her mother (Minnie/Lois) was 3 (about 1894).
I have a copy of the one known photograph of him.
He married Clara/Clarice/Claire Gillett, b. Sept 1872, d. 19 Oct 1907.
1900 Census, Nankin Twp., Wayne Co. MI shows Clara living with her father (Ira Gillett) & 2 of 4 children: Minnie (age 8) & Margaret (age 3); both children listed as father & mother born in Michigan.
Clara remarried to George Grosvent 8 Feb 1904 at West Branch MI, had 1 known child (living).
I do have some additional info on Clara.
Still seeking any info on Margueritte/Margaret (d/o Charles & Clara Bernhardt/Bsrnhardt).
