My grandfather was Gedalia Barkan, from Polotsk; he stayed in New York, then New Jersey, and then moved his family (wife Ana Slavin, daughter Tessie to San Francisco, where they then had my father Milton and a daughter, Esther. Any chance of a relation?

I'm trying to trace Gedalia (went by Joe, later), Barkan from Polotsk, Belarus. He married Annie Slavin. They had three children, Max (Milton), Tessie and Esther.

Gedalia was born in 1887, and Annie was born in 1889.

I'm trying to find out when they traveled to NY.

I know Sanford Barkus in Elmira was a relative. Sanford barkus did a family tree and my first cousi Bill Wallach made a disc of it. did you ever hear it? waiting to hear from you.g

my grandfather was a photographer and his name was samuel barkan. He eventually moved to Sandusky, OH and ran a photog business there for many years.

My name is Victor Barkon. We are came in US in 1991 from Kiev, USSR(now Ukraine. All these twenty years I tried fond people who have the same last name. My father, Valdimir Barkon told me that his grandfather or gradegrandfather was born in Lituvania. But I'm not sure, it sound like a legend. Maybi we are relatives. Who knows? Yor post dating at 2000. Now 2012, well, I don't know what gonna happen.

The Sam Barcan who died in 1936 and a member and leade r of the Polostk group, I do not believe is relative. He was my great grandfather and that family was grounded in the Bronx and the Lower East Side of NYC, pretty much exclusively. My maiden name is Barkan and we are from St.Petersburg/Leningrad. My father's name was Moisey Barkan, grandfather Veniamin (from Polotsk)HaCohen, his wife Rivka Piratinsky was from Nevel. We are probably related?.. Let me know.

I have been reading with great interest the postings on BARKAN and see that there are a few similarities.
My ggggrandfather was Granum BARKAN (Hacoen) married to Anna
my gggrandfather was Abraham/Abram MARRINSON married to Esther KASDAN. The name Marrinson was taken to avoid conscription into the army. Abraham was a teacher and scribe in Vitebsk and emigrated to Minnesota. He was born in Borisov, Belarus in 1842 and the description of the area was near the Dvinsk River & Polatsk. Esther was born in Pleshtinitz.
my ggrandfather was Hershel/Harry MARRINSON married to Mary EDELSON. He was born iin Kamen, Vitebsk in 1867.
Our family is Cohen and originally part of the Lubavitch sect.

I reread the old posting It was a Rabbi that said to us about the Bar Cohen but I did not do DNA and really have only that so who knows . The image of Abraham Barkan's tombstone may help. What looks like his middle and last name are written in hebrew. The middle name looks like Saul and the last name looks broken into 2 words - Bar Cohen / Bar Kahn (Son of a Cohen). When you look for European records, translaters may have spelled 'kan' different ways - and Barkan may be 2 words.

By the way, his son Harold's wife was Edith Haberman, right? I'm a cousin on her side of the family.

my grandfather Henry Borken was born in nyc 1893 i do not have his parents names but have birth certificate my understanding is they came from lithuania vilinius but also
their were relatives from russia moscow perhaps i found out
from the rabbi at my brothers bar mitzvah that it is barcohen my dad norman was a doctor there were borkens that came in 1800s to ca but i dont have the ship lists i looked up before my email is samikwest@yahoo riga vilinius and kovner were fairly close together

My grandmother and her five sisters werre all children of Sam and Anna (Efroiken) Barkan, who eloped and emigrated to Michigan from Riga before 1890. Sam indeed died young, probably before 1906, leaving his wife and daughters to struggle. My grandmother, Ann, was sent to New York City to live with relatives before returning to Michigan in 1906. The graves of Sam and Anna Barkan are here in Bay City, Michigan. Any further information that could connect Sam to the rest of the Barkans would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the answer and no need to apologize. I forgot to add in my previous message that our Barkans are NOT Kohanim. One branch that of my father’s uncle BenZion Barkan and his wife Frida Zidon and their 5 children arrived to then Palestine in 1923 from Liepaja, another branch arrived from Ludza in 1935. Later in the late 60th other Barkans arrived from Argentina and Uruguay.
We are quite a big family here in Israel and once in 2-3 years we are meeting all together. I am living in Tel-Aviv.
Can we continue our corresponding in direct e-mails? Is your address the one that appears here?

Thank you for responding. I am not sure as to whether any of my family was from Riga. I know that my grandfather was born in Drissa - small jewish settlement near city of Polotsk, Belarus. In the 1920's he moved to St. Petersburg. I am not sure, if any of the family ever went to live in Riga.

How much did it cost you to hire a genealogist? How accurate were his/her results? What were his/her sources? Were the sources reliable? Where did you hire him/her?

I appologize for not responding right away. I am not sure as to whether any of my mother's great grandfather received such a permission. May be one of his siblings/cousins received such a permission. But I believe that my mother's father (my grandfather) was the first one to move to St. Petersburg when he was 13 (that was in 1920s, i think). His brothers shortly followed him. I will investigate this further, however, I dont promise results. Unfortunately, there are not too many people to ask.

I am not sure if any of Barkans in my family tree are Kohanim. My grandfather (my mother's father) was married to Maria Gurevich. We have relatives living in New York (and I guess all over the world). I am not sure who are our Barkan relatives in Israel. I will investigate it as well. I am sure we have someone there too.

By the way, where are you located? I am in New York.

Thanks for your prompt answer. Some names you mentioned appears in my family too – Aron, Feigeh, Meier, Zalman (which is actually Shlomo). My great grandfather or his father received a special permission from the Czar to live with his family in St. Petersburg and I heard that we do have there relatives, but am not able to confirm it up to now.

Do you know if your Barkans are Kohanim? Are you in contact with your Israeli Barkans?
My father’s uncle Israel-Bernhadt went to Israel (Then Palestine) with his family at 1923 and most of his offspring are still living in Israel.

Thank you for replying. I need to make some clarifications with respect to where my mother's family came from. Her father came from jewish settlement of Drissa, Belarus (near city of Polotsk). His father, Aron, lived in Drissa, but not sure where exactly he was born. He was a melamed (teacher) in a hedder (pre-school) in the settlement. He had other children besides my mother's father (Beynus). They were: Sadik, Anatolii, and Olga (not clear as to the jewish name). My mother's father immigrated to St. Petersburg when he was 13. Aron was married to Faigelah. He had two twin brothers Zalman and Mayer (sp?), and a sister Sonya (not sure of the jewish name). His father (my mother's great grandfather) Ilya (not sure of the jewish name) was a clock repairman. My mother's father's brothers in 1920s immigrated to St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and worked as jeweler (Mayer) and book publisher (Zalman).
The generation of my mother's father are in Israel and in N. America. I am not sure whether we had any relatives in Latvia. Maybe we did...

My father Abram Barkan the son of Shlomo Barkan was born in Liepaja. His father and other family members are from Jekabpils, Latvia and from Vitebsk area as yours. Part of his branch went to Riga, Siberia, South America.

I am trying to trace the nationality of the my ancestor's surname. His name was Andras Barkany.

He came to American from Hungary in 1904 and listed his Ethnicity: Hungarian, Magyar. However if he had been Jewish I don't think he would have listed it. He may have been fleeing persecution. Does any know if this is a Jewish name or could he have aquired this name from a town of residence.

My mother's maiden name is Barkan. Her father - Beynus (or Boris - hence my first name) Barkan came from somewhere in Belarus from a small jewish village near city of VItebsk. During WWII, the family was evacuated to Ural Mountains. I will supply further information later. Any relatives? Thanks

My Father's people Borken came from Russia , probably Moscow and Probably from Lithuania too . My Father would look up the name in the phone books whenever he traveled. Not too much since he was a Doctor with a family in Miami.
Anyway ,my Grandfather's name was Henry Borken (possibly Israel) and he was born in lower Manhattan.He married Mary Kavner also born lower Manhattan. Let me know and I will do the same since I have been puttering lately.Oh the name Birkahn perhaps is the same from Latvia etc. and Turkey .

Diego: The name Barcan comes from Spain during the Inquisition, then to Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, Russia. It appears in Polotsk, Belarus from at least 1563, the t ime of Ivan the Terrible.

The name Barcan (from Polotsk, Belarus from at least 1563, during the time of Ivan the Terrible. There were Barcans in Latvia (Riga), Lithuania, Belarus, across Europe, South AMerica. IN Spanish, the name became Barca. It comes from son of a cohen. Bar COhen.

Great to read your information. Were the men in the family Cohens? B ecause the spelling Borken, Barcan. B arken doesn't matter - what is common is that the name has root in Bar Cohen, or son of a cohen. My grandfather was born in Polotsk, Belarus. But there were Barcans in Riga, Lithuania, even came from Spain.

Many Barkans fled Belarus and Riga for Urals and for Azerbayjhan during WWII. My grandfather had 12 children. He was Shai. MY father was born in the US. We spell the Name Barcan, but the thing is Bar Cohen - son of a cohen.

Barkans from Riga

My father was Harold Barkan who was born in the Bronx NY in 1924

His father was Abraham (Abram) Barkan who was born around 1889
Abram arrived in 1906 to Ellis Island from Riga with three of his siblings - I can't read the handwriting very well but these appear to be the names: Dobe, Leie, and Meren
I believe his first stop was to Philadelphia to see "L Cohen on Catharine Street" but I cannot locate anyone after that.

My father's mother was Annya (Temkin) Barkan who was born 1899

Abram died at the age of 40 in 1929 and Annya died at 48 in 1947

My father was adopted in 1947 by his stepfather, Harry Abramson, and out of respect he never spoke about his childhood or the Barkan family.

Any information anyone can provide for the Barkan genealogy would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached a picture of my Grandfather's Headstone which may give you some clues.

Samuel's last name was Barkan, and he was a photographer in Sandusky. They moved there from Cleveland in approx 1930.

He came from Belarus to the US when he was about 5 or 6. Died in 1972 in /columbus.

How are you related to him? He was my maternal grandfather.

His dad died when he was a child and he was adopted which is why I know next to nothing about the Barkan history, but your story sounds very familiar. Does anyone know about a Barkan who had a son in 1924 and then passed away shortly after ??

That would be great !! The dates and the towns certainly fit what I have heard. Anything you could find would be a great help. I have a box full of pictures (the backs of many have long hand yiddish and I have not been able to find anyone to translate) Any ideas ??

Jewish Barkan family

I am distantly related to a Barkan family that lived in Dneiperpetrovsk (aka Yekaterinaslav). This would have been in the early 20th century. Vladimir aka Volodya Barkan married Sonia Luria (my grandmother's cousin). They had three children: Leah, Rochel and Isroel Barkan. According to my grandmother the entire family died in the Holocaust. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and my grandfather Bernardo Barkan, came from Latvia, I think from the area of Riga in the 20' of the 20th century.
Now we are living in Tel Aviv.

There was a Barkin or Barkan, I believe, in my family who died prematurely. I don't have it all updated, but check out www.ancestry.com and pick Family Trees and put Shaia Barkin in and see if you recognize anyone. If not, I can look at a series of emails from my cousin that might state the name of this deceased person.
