Many Barbee's have been searching for years for a connection to the early Andrew and William Barbee lines of Virginia and North Carolina, but they didn't have a clue which line they might connect to.
After 3 short months of DNA testing, now it is possible to answer that question once and for all. Through DNA testing of descendants of Andrew and William, we have found that they are NOT related. This means that other Barbee's who get DNA tested can find out which of these early Barbee's they are related to.
On the Andrew Barbee line, we have discovered that the James Barbee and Sarah Martin line from South Carolina are related which came as a big surprise to me!
On the William Barbee line, we have discovered that the following family lines are related:
--John "Smith" Barbee and Loubina Henderson of Macon County, Tennessee,
--Elzey Barbee and Polly Maples of Grainger County, Tennessee,
--Hilary Barbee of North Carolina, Lawrence County, Tennessee and Boone County, Arkansas,
--John Barbee and Martha of Alamance County, North Carolina,
--Haws Barbee and Polly Jones of Caroline County, Virginia and Franklin County, Ohio, and
--Matthew Barbee and Rebecca McCormick of Marion County, Tennessee.
The John "Smith" Barbee line is my line and I have been stuck for years. He was orphaned right before the Civil War on the Kentucky/Tennessee border. There are descendants of Andrew and William close by and I had no idea which way to look so I've been researching both lines for 15 years. Now I can quit looking for my connection in the Andrew line and focus on William. This cuts my time and effort in half!
In addition, by testing more descendants of Andrew and William Barbee we hope to identify more closely where other family lines connect. Small differences in the DNA allow us to distinguish between different branches. We also hope to test European Barbee's to determine our roots.
