Searching for info on the Balfe's and Dobb's of Co. Wicklow (Tomacork / Carnew).
There appear to have been two separate eimgrations of Balfe's to Canada. One in the 1830's - possibly a Nicholas Balfe - went to the Ottawa Ontario area. The second was about 1848 as part of the Fitzwilliam Clearances. This time, three brothers, John, Nicholas and Thomas and their families went to Canada, settling in Smiths Falls, near Ottawa,Ontario.
I am descended from John who married Alice Dobbs. Alice's sister Julia, married Patrick Murphy and they were also cleared to Canada.
The father of these three brothers was Ned/Edward Balfe (born c.1780) and there may have been a fourth brother, also Ned/Edward who remained in Ireland.
I'm seeking info on the Balfe's who came before the Famine as well as trying to tie together loose ends in Ireland and find out out about Balfe descendants still in Ireland and the UK. I can share information about the Famine Balfe and Dobbs emigre's and their descendants in Canada. Any info. on the Dobb's family in Ireland is also appreciated.
Thank you,
Joanna
