See the post I just put under the thread for "William Balbirnie" in this forum for the location of a digital copy of William's account in 1860 of the Balbirnie family (separate from the book he wrote on the Vances, which is also bound together in that same digital work).

I haven't done any research on the Balbirnies myself so I can't vouch for William's accuracy, but he goes into much detail on the history of the Balbirnie name, their coats of arms, and family legends.
