The latter was born and lived in Jersey, Channel Islands before moving to Australia in 1851.I think Ebenezer's parents were Maria (Chandler0 and Ebenezer Backwell - both born c1790.
Any help greatly appreciated,

David Backwell

Hi Jim

I'm sorry, Susan Backwell isn't one of mine. However, if you google Pat Backwell you will find there is a Pat Backwell who is a marine biologist in Australia and who has published a lot of work. I dod correspond with her some time ago and she was originally from South Africa so it may well be a relative of hers. I'm sorry, but I don't have her email address any more.

Good luck

Pat

Hello Marcos,

Thanks you for contacting me about Robert BACKWELL. I would be most
interested to hear from you about the BACKWELL family, as I do not
know a lot about Robert's parents and siblings. From my records he
married my cousin Priscilla, who's family history I have a great deal
of knowledge.

I attempted to contact you at your e-mail address given in your message, but it appears not to be a active e-mail address, and so I have posted here on the notice board.

Matthew Price Backwell b. bet 1799 & 1801

Searching for the parents of Matthew Price Backwell, born bet 1799 and 1801 in Bristol, Somerset, England. (This according to him in the census)

Matthew lived in Castletown, Isle of Man, where he was a bookseller and engraver. It is reported that he was editor of Port of Tyne Pilot before coming to the Island around 1845.

He was married to Frances Browne (b. abt 1798) and had the following children:
Matthew James, Nov 2, 1829
Frances (Fanny), July 3, 1825
Esther Ann, May 10, 1827
Caroline Elizabeth, Sep 26, 1831
Ellen Matilda, Sep 14, 1843
Jane Amelia, Feb 22, 1847

After Frances' death, Matthew married again to Phoebe Gathercole (almost 40 years younger...) In 1881, they lived at 36 Hicks Road, Litherland, Lancashire, and were probably still there at the time of Matthew's death, pre-1901.

I have found a couple of Backwells in the census with the middle name of Price but have so far been unable to determine their parentage.

If you have a connection, I'd love to hear about it and can provide numerous Manx cousins.

Backwells of London and Buckinghamshire, 16th-18th centuries

Am looking for connections (if any) among London Backwell families of the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. My ancestor Edward Backwell (c1618-1683), a London alderman, was a goldsmith and banker ruined in 1672 when the Crown defaulted on the huge sums of money he had lent Charles II.

Edward Backwell was born probably in Creslow, Bucks., son of Barnaby Backwell (d. 1644/5, yeoman) and wife Jane Temple (d. 1664/5), both of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. By first wife he had son John Backwell (1654-1708), whom he married to Elizabeth Tyringham, heiress of the Tyringhams of Tyringham, Bucks.; by second wife Mary Leigh, Edward had sons Richard Backwell (c1664-1731, my ancestor), Col. Leigh Backwell (d. 1737) and Barnaby Backwell (both of the latter were unm.).

When Edward Backwell and his elder? brother John Backwell (d. 1703?) made their fortunes as London goldsmiths, a fancy pedigree was "found" for them, including "undoubted" origins in Backwell, Somerset; squires in famous medieval battles, etc. Does anyone have any hints as to the actual ancestry of the yeoman Barnaby Backwell of Leighton Buzzard, Beds., or to that of his wife Jane Temple, named in that "pedigree" as "daughter of John Temple of Burton Dassett, Esq.," but who is nowhere to be found in genealogies of that large and prominent family?

Hi Julie - I don't think I can help you in your quest but I too am a Backwell - my family come from Devon and although we hoped we might be connected to edward we are fairly sure we're not! I can trace back to a Richard Backwell born in 1799 in Dartmouth and know his father was also a Richard but not who he was or where he was from - Dartmouth was a busy port so maybe he was a sailor or from elsewhere in Britain.

We also assume the family originate from Backwell and migrated down to Devon at some point but haven't got back that far yet - I lived in Backwell for some years as a child myself! If I do come across any definite links between the name and the village I will let you know - I'd be interested if you turn anything up too.
