Hello,

I never went back and checked this. I sent my mother the information. She has always wondered about Ernst. My mom said that first names and last names back then weren't always accurate and that people changed their names sometimes. I knew about the 2 boys drowning and I had heard stories about Ernst....one story was he died, one story was he never liked it here so after the boys drowned it was the last straw for him and he went back to Germany. I had another aunt, Lois (Steinke) Sobyak, my mothers sister who has visited Germany and did try to do the family tree. I haven't seen what she came up with but as a younger child when I was in high school maybe, I remember hearing then about records she found about Ernst (My great-grandfather) that he remarried and started another family in Germany. My Grandma, Erna, never remembered him as far as I know. Mom always told me she was a baby but she would have been 2 years old when her brothers died. Not a baby, but definitely not old enough to remember someone.

My mom is Elaine (Steinke) Miller. Her phone number is 715-726-1559 and her email is don.elaine@sbcglobal.net. We have recently been trying to work on a family tree together but she might be the best person to talk to for updates.

I am researching Gottfried Lange and Caroline Turski. they came from DanZig area about 24 miles south on the junction of two rivers,Vistula and negat. Emma was my grandfather Heinrich Gottfried (Henry) sister. she married Louis Backus.
Ludwig Wilhelm Heinrich Backhaus 15 Aug 1875 21 jun 1955. note spelling change. hope this helps. sons arthur 1902 to 1966 and harry ludwig Backhaus 1905-1914

I can verify the birthday and the marriage of T. Backhaus to F. Backhaus.I never knew her maiden name,but heard her German accent for over thirty consectutive years.I knew her five grandchildren as well as her son and daughter.We lived close by for many,many years.I hold volumes of information concerning our relationship over thirty years.I never met or knew of any great,great children but am sure they exist.If you need or want further information please respond to this message board. Backhaus Family in Farbezin, Germany

My Backhaus ancestors originally came from Farbezin, Germany which is now part of Poland. I had found some information on this family in Farbezin recently on this website that was created by a Joanna Becker. Is there any way that I can find her email address through Rootsweb? I'm hoping that she might have information for me on this family.

My great, great grandparents immigrated to America in the 1850's...Christian Friedrich Backhaus and Charlotte Krueger, Christian was from Farbezin.

Christian's parents were Peter Backhaus and Louise Manteufel. Christian's mother died giving birth to him and Peter then married Maria Backhaus. They also lived in Farbezin, Germany.

I have been trying to research back farther than this but can't seem to find out who Peter's parents were or get back even further then that. I had posted several years ago but am hoping by now new members are now signed onto Rootsweb and that someone will have some information for me. Forgot to mention, you have some spelling erros in this. Ellis Island lists last name as Backhauss. Name is actually Bockhaus (via birth certificates etc). Father's first name was Ernst. I don't know who you have in the concentration camp, but if that's supposed to be Ernst & Anna Marie, that's wrong. He left her after Fred and Karl drown in Wolf Creek in 1913. He showed up back in Germany a few years later. Anna married Monte Nelson and died in Durand, Wisconsin.

Yes I know 'Aunt Erna', actually she's my great aunt. Her sister Helena was my grandmother. I'ld love to compare notes on anything you have found on the family. I have a lot, but not much prior to Ernst.

My grandmother's maiden name was Backhaus. She lived in Corpus Christy, Tx where my father John Edgar Cope was born. He always told me that his mother was Dutch. That's all I know about her except, her father was a musician. She married my grandfather William Edgar Cope abt 1912 and divorced about 10 years later.

I guess then, my grandmother's parents came from Germany. All I know that she married my grandfather somewhere around 1912. Her mother (don't know first name) lived in Corpus Christy, Tx. She later married an Earnest Hurley in Fort Worth, Tx.

Have a grandmother whose maiden name was Bakhaus. Not sure of the spelling but she married my grandfather William Edgar Cope and later married an Earnest Hurley Her first name was Mary and her father was from England. I believe that she was born in Corpus Cristi, Tx as this is where my Father John Edgar Cope was born in 1914.

They came to America in 1709 from Stromberg, Germany.

I am also researching a Ferdinand Backhaus (wife Henrietta, maiden surname unknown). Here is what I know about them: Ferdinand Backhause b. abt 01 Sept 1832, Germany, d. 13 Oct 1897, Le Sueur, Le Sueur County, Minnesota. Henrietta b. abt Jan 1839, Kannenbery, Pommery, Prussia; d. 23 Jan 1895, Le Sueur, Le Sueur County, Minnesota. Henrietta's obituary indicates that she and Ferdinand moved to Le Sueur in 1882 and resided their until their deaths; she was survived by her husband and five children. Ferdinand's obituary states that he was a native of Germany and that he was survived by two daughters and two sons. Ferdinand emigrated to the US with his wife and four children (I'm not sure if all of them belonged to him). Those children traveling with him were: Herman (age 16 in 1882); Richard (age 15 in 1882); Carl (age 4 in 1882) and Emilie (age 8 in 1882). I am trying to locate additional information about Emma Henrietta Albertine BACKHAUS (born 18 Apr 1878 in Ecorse Twp, Wayne County, MI; married Gustav August LANGE on 13 Nov 1897 in St Paul's Lutheran Church in Taylor, Wayne County, MI; died 26 Mar 1964 in Allen Park, Wayne County, MI; and is buried in Bloomdale Cemetery in Trenton, Wayne, MI.

Looking for information on Backhaus family. My great, great grandparents were Christian Backhaus (born: Nov 28, 1820 in Farbecean, Pomerania, Germany) and his wife, Charlotte Krueger (born: Nov 20, 1820 also near Farbecian, Pomerania, Germany). I believe that Christian's parents were Peter Backhaus and his wife Marie (last name unknown). Christian and Charlotte immigrated to America in approximately 1850). I am looking for information about Ernst Ludwig Backhaus and his father, Christan Backhaus. Ernst married Meta Luetjen in 1848 in Hamburg. Meta was from the Scharmbeck area. Church records indicate that Christian Backhaus was from Mensinghausen amt Uchte. Children of Ernst and Metta were Metta Alheid, Johann Diedrich, Gesche, Metta Maria, Marten, Bernhard, and Ernst Heinrich. The children were born in Hamburg and several of them immigrated to New York in the 1880s.

Christian had a son Ernst Ludwig Backhaus who married Meta Luetjen (daughter of Martin Luetjen and Mette Bottjer) in Hamburg on March 25, 1848. Ernst and Metta had seven children and lived in Hamburg. Two sons, Bernard Bockhaus (born 9/291863) and John Bockhaus (born 10/16/1850), came to Brooklyn about 1880.

Were her parents in this country?
Did she possibly have Social Security?
Do you have a death certificate for her?
Have you ever tried looking for a ship's manifest?

I think you need to obtain some "American" records on Ferdinand...death certificate, census, etc. to establish a more definite age.
Have you ever searched the microfiche for the Backhaus surname at a Mormon library?
You might also have success looking for a ship's manifest. Try looking for NY as a port of entry. The manifest might show you a town of origin in Prussia.
"Preussian" records are kept under the German section of much of the Mormon's holdings.
