Hi,
I just started researching my Baad ancestors. I might be able to answer some questions posed here, as well as find clarification for some of my own. I notice all of these posts are several years old.
Are there any Baad researchers still here?
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
I just happened to visit this site tonight. I'm one of those who posted a few years ago. I know that my grandfather (Frances Baad) was researching the family before he died. I'll try to find out where all of that information ended up. He lived in Western Michigan but was related to Baads who moved there from Ohio. Does that sound like your branch of the "Baad tree?"

Hi Ingrid,
Thanks for writing back!
I don't know about the Baads in Michigan, except that they're there. I may indeed have a connection. My g-g-grandmother was a Baad. Her parents were Christian Friedrich Baad and Elisabeth (Magenan) Baad. I had assumed that Christian and Elisabeth came to America like so many others. After beginning my research, I found out that it was an entire family that came from Germany (Steinheim an der Murr in Baden Wuerttemburg).
The Baads settled in New Bedford, Coshocton County, Ohio. They were founding members of St. John's Lutheran church (now disbanded). My mom was from New Bedford, and much of my childhood was spent there. I am the last on my branch of the family tree to have been baptized at St. John's.
Studying the cemetery and the church book of St. John's, here's what I believed happened with the Baads:
Georg Adam Baad (1791-1867) and his wife Rosina Barbara (Ott) Baad (1796-1881) (and two brothers, Gottfried Baad (1796-1872) and Jacob Friedrich (1807-1888)) came to America with their children Christian Friedrich (1820-1881), Samuel Friedrich (1824-1891), Christian G. Baad (1830-1916), Louise Margaretha (O1834-1866), Christina (1836-1916), and Wilhelm Gottfried (1840-1879).
That last one, Wilhelm, I believe might begin the Michigan connection. Wilhelm moved to the town of Warsaw and appears to have operated a store. He married a Temperance Darling in 1865. The Darlings were a prominent family in the early days of Coshocton County. Wilhelm's store was located on a lot between the main street (now SR 36) and the old Canal. The canal is gone now, and the lot now holds the town fire dept. Behind his store, on the other side of the canal, was a large mill owned by the Darling Family.
Wilhelm and Temperance had the following children: Harriet (b. 1867), Joseph (b. 1871), and Frank (b. 1872). Wilhelm died in 1879 at age 38 and is buried in Darling Run Cemetery, just west of the town of Warsaw. Temperance remarried a Allen van Lien (Van Lehn?) in 1844.
The rest is off the top of my head. I think Frank Baad went to Michigan, and was later joined by his sister Harriet and mother Temperance. I found Harriet later at Akron Ohio living with her mother Temperance, now going by her old name of Baad. It sticks in my mind that I came across a death certificate for Harriet and Temperance and they were buried in Michigan. Does any of this ring a bell?
I kind of put the Baads on the shelf for a while because I'm working on getting through a brick wall on the other side of the family. The Baads have turned out to be very large and very spread out. I figured it would take a lot of time to get them all sorted out.
I'm descended from Wilhelm's older brother Christian Friedrich. His daughter was Mena Wilhelmina, and she was my g-g-Grandmother. Christian Friedrich had two sons, William Godfrey and Adam. Notice how the same names stay within the family?
Hope this helps.
Best wishes, Mike

I'm hoping to find any living relatives of the Baad family - originally Ohio and then Michigan. My mother is in possession of some oval portraits that she was told are of Baad ancestors and she wants to get them back to family members. We were good friends with Hazel Wagoner Baad who was the second wife of Earle Webster Baad (1887-1974) living in Three Rivers Michigan. Hazel died and left alot of things to my mother. Hazel had a niece from Ohio or Illinois who came to visit (this was in the late 1970s and early 1980's). Earle was the son of George J Baad (1844-1929) and Fredricka Spaklinger. George J Baad is the son of Jacob F Baad (1807) and Charlotte Rieth (1804). THANKS

Well, I would be one, I guess. Jakob and Charlotte (Rieth) Baad are buried in the old cemetery in Bolivar, OH. I am descended from Jakob's older brother Adam Friedrich Baad. Our Baads came from the city of Steinheim an der Murr in Germany.
So, some of Jakob's descendants ended up in Michigan, eh? That's interesting. Old Adam Baad's son Wilhelm Friedrich had descendents that went up there too.
If you send me an email address, I can send you what I have of a Baad family history. There's a section where I touch on Jakob and Charlotte. I will also send you an invite to view my ancestry.com pages. through there, you can get to my profile page on Jakob. If I remember correctly, I have pictures of Jakob and Charlotte's headstone, and the gps coordinates. You can copy and paste those into google earth, and probably google maps to see the cemetery where they are buried.
The Baads were in New Bedford, Coshocton Co., Ohio. Some eventually moved on from there, but my immediate ancestors stayed. They were among the first members of the Lutheran congregation there. Sadly, St. John's church is no more. It was torn down a few years ago. My parents were married there, I was the last person of my immediate family to be baptized there.
Nice to meet you!

Sorry, Adam's son Wilhelm Gottfried, not Wilhelm Friedrich. Also, just checked. I didn't put the picture or the gps coordinates on Jakob's ancestry page. They are in my computer that is "down" at the moment. If I can't resurrect it, I will re-take later in the spring. Bolivar is not far from me. It is a small town on the northern border of Tuscarawas county, which is also, historically, part of the Greenville Treaty line, if you're into history.
Thanks, Mike

Hello, I am a descendant of George J Baad (1844-1929) and would very much appreciate the portraits you have. I'm currently doing research on our history and am willing to share what I have also. I'm located in Northern Indiana but can travel to Michigan.
Thanks

Hi Jim. I'm sorry it took so long to respond to this. It has been a crazy busy spring. I'm excited to hear from you. I have sent out pics of the actual portraits for folks but we would surely like to get these to someone who is a relative. We no longer live in Michigan. My mom packed the portraits up carefully and moved them with her when they went to Tucson. My sister is currently there and can probably pack them up for mailing. Please message me through my Ancestry profile - kathyval which is where I have the Baad Family Tree (a little bit anyway, mostly out of curiosity). THANKS PS - if you have trouble doing that, reply here on the board and I'll give you an email. Kathy

Kathy thank you so much for the response. I don't have a full ancestry membership (maybe someday) but you can email me at jimbaad at hotmail.com
If you have digital copies of the portraits I would love to see them.
Thanks again for responding.
Jim
