Hi! Here's what I know: my great-great-grandfather was an officer in the Prussian army named Karl Georg von Buttner who was from Lobenstein, Saxony. (There should be umlauts over the "u".) My great-grandfather was Karl Ferdinand Buettner, who immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1800s and was, I believe, a cobbler by trade. The "von" was dropped either when K.F. entered the U.S. or during WWI because of strong anti-German sentiments. I understand he came to the U.S. with a brother named Henry (Henri?) but once here they went their separate ways. I've also heard that my great-grandfather was one of the founding fathers of Racine, WI, but I have not verified this.

I do not know where Henry ended up. My grandfather is Carl Ferdinand Buettner who was born in 1908 (or so) and died in 1965. He had ties to WI and MN before moving to Los Angeles in the mid-1950s. Hopefully something sounds familiar to somebody out there.

I find your "Carl Frederick" Buttner name VERY familiar. My ancestor was Henrich C.F. and he had sons named Henry C. and Jacob Frederick. He was born Jan. 4, 1828 in Saxony, but I haven't found his roots. He came to the US in 1858 and settled in Turbotville, PA (where my father grew up).
