Sons of Moses Ayer, North Bucksport, Maine

I have no connection at all to these families but found this while doing other research. It appeared in the Aug. 10, 1855 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"On Tuesday evening 31st ult, two boys, brothers, sons of Moses Ayer, one aged 15 and the other 11, were drowned at North Bucksport."

I have a book entitled "Some Data about The Ayer Family in the South"....collected by Louise Ayer Vandiver. My mother's maiden name is Ayer. I am unsure of the complete accuracy of the book, but it is interesting and was quite accurate re: my grandfather's (Edwin Ayer) immediate family. --Mark Price, Owensboro KY

OldCornerBooks.com has on consignment a 4 volume set of an early Bible (with commentary by Thomas Scott) published in 1830. In the front of the book is a list of Ayer familial records, marriages, births and deaths, written in old script. Inside of the front cover is stamped the address of R. H. Ayer, Concord, NH. Would this be of any interest?

seeking family of Rev. Oliver Ayer, of West Stockbridge Mass 1790s then of many small towns in central New York

Am seeking to locate people who are "in the know" about...Rev. Oliver Ayer and family once of Massachusetts and later of New York.

Oliver Ayer founded church congregations in many small places in New York... including (errors possible here) Victor, New Haven, Geneva, Perry, Augusta, Sandy Creek, Mexico, Marion, LeRoy, Wyoming, Bloomfield, "Green and Cosharie Counties," Pulaski, more. This activity began about 1798 and continued almost to his death. He worked for a Protestant missionary outreach sponsored by congregations in Connecticut, Massachusetts and eventually settled congregations in New York. It seems that he was on the road a great deal of his adult life until the last few years.

Oliver Ayer was born in 1765 in Connecticut and died in 1832 in Sandy Creek. His wife was Phoebe Brown b. 1767 in Mass. d. 1836 in Sandy Creek. I think they only lived in this last place for a few years. She seems to have been relatively settled and living at home with the boys at Augusta NY in 18teens and early 1820s.

Children
--Dr. John Grier Ayer b. 1795 W. Stockbridge Mass, died before 1880; likely a batchelor; lived in Sandy Creek, Oswego Co, NY

--Oliver Ayer (Jr)--b. 1801 Ct or Mass, d. prob 1886 prob in NY --may have been a wagonmaker in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co, NY

--Clarissa (?) Ayer--this is a guess. If I'm right that there is a girl, she was born before 1800, probably W. Stockbridge Mass.

--Daniel Ayer b. 1802 West Stockbridge Mass d. 1861 at Herkimer NY, was a newspaper printer and owner in the area of Herkimer & Little Falls NY.

--Rev. Frederic Ayer--b. 1803 West Stockbridge Mass d. 1867 Atlanta Georgia. This man is the subject of my research. He because a missionary to Indians at Mackinaw and then in interior Mich. Territory (Wisc. & Minn.). He married Elisabeth Taylor, another missionary. They had two sons, Frederic (jr.) who died and Lyman Ayer who lived to marry Laura Hill and have two children Agnes (died) and Ina Ayer who married Osborne Sims.

The Frederic Ayer story is in New York at Utica, in Michigan at Mackinac Island, in Wisconsin at La Pointe and in the Danbury area at Yellow Lake, in Minnesota at Pokegama/Pine City, Little Falls/Belle Prairie, Red Lake, Fond du Lac, Sandy Lake, St. Cloud; in Atlanta Georgia 1865-67 at the AMA mission there. He was a participant in the revivals of the 1820s in the Utica area. At Belle Prairie in 1850s he and wife and son ran a farm and the "Belle Prairie Seminary" for Indians and frontier children which was sponsored by donations from Eastern friends and relatives I believe. His ordination occurred at Oberlin in 1843.

His wife Elisabeth Taylor b. 1803 at Heath Mass. d. 1898 at Little Falls, Minn. was a Mackinaw missionary as well. She was with him in all the other cited places during their marriage.

They wrote many informative letters to sponsoring donors as well as to relatives. Some of their pieces were published in local newspapers. I very much hope to find extant materials sent by them from their mission stations, esp from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) communities and from the freedmen mission in the South.

Frederic Ayer had clear handwriting and signed "F. Ayer." His wife had incredibly precise handwriting and signed "E.T. Ayer" which many observers thought was "E.F. Ayer" and may be listed in archives that way. I've never seen handwriting of rest of family.

Any chance you have any old letters that describe Indians at prayer along the trails of fur trade country or former slaves who are building a school and a church in bombed-out Atlanta? How about some kind of "mission Sunday" brochure or newspaper article that features an Ayer mission that your congregation once sponsored? Sure would like to learn about them!

Linda Bryan
1752 Gulden Place
Maplewood MN 55109

I sent the Bible to him many years ago. He and his extended family were thrilled to have such a wonderful piece of their family history. They were the Ayer family that the town of Ayer, Massachusetts was named after. Not sure if that's your lineage as well, but hope this helps.

W.C. Ayer from St. Louis, MO?

Among my grandmother's photos and letters were photos of "W.C. Ayer", as well as telegrams he sent to her from St. Louis in 1927 and 1928, when my father and aunt were born. I believe they were either friends (or boyfriend/girlfriend), or that he took her under his wing when she was essentially orphaned in 1911 (her father committed suicide in St. Louis and her mother "disappeared" from her childrens' lives.

My grandmother's name was Ethel Beans, and she lived in St. Louis from 1905 to about 1926. She married my grandfather, Ralph Witten, in St. Louis, and they moved to San Fernando, CA.

I would love to know more about who Mr. Ayer was, and what his relationship was to Ethel Beans. I did find an obituary for a W.C. Ayer who owned the St. Louis Button Company, but I do not know that they are the same person. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Anne Witten Fried

Would you consider a DNA test to help with your research and with ours?

There is a group that was formed to study Ayer/Ayers DNA. Although it was originally intended to study those in the southern states, data has shown that many of the northern Ayer/Ayers went south. In addition there has been some accumulation of New England data.

The testing methods used and the collection of samples insures that the data cannot be used except for genealogy purposes.

Please contact me direct, Willisb199@aol.com , if you are interested in greater details of the test. I also have some data on your family accumulated during my many years of interest in the genealogy of the Ayer family. I am willing to share that information.

Happy hunting, Willis

Thanks for the info. I did actually find where James and Betsy Ayers were buried in Conway, NH and found their old homesteads in Albany and Deerfield. james C was actually born in Deerfield according to some of his military records and children's death records. There is an Ayers burying ground in Deerfield (James C's siblings are buried there) and there is one in Albany ( but Eleanor Ayers got a disinterment application approved and had all the Ayers relocated to Conway.

Probably the closest we have to first hand information on Thomas Ayer comes from an interview with his son, Lewis Malone Ayer, Sr., in the 1850's. In the book, the History of the Old Cheraws by Rev. Alexander Gregg, we have the substance of that interview. In it, it states that Thomas Ayer came from Ireland. Although it does not state he was born there, I think it would have noted the fact if that was not so. Interestingly enough, a copy of Thomas Ayer's signature exists in the South Carolina archives. To me, it is rather apparent that his wife taught him how to write his last name. His name may have been spelled differently prior to the emigration. By the way, her signature (from a later document) is absolutely beautiful!

As far as I know, Thomas was born in Ireland. We can trace him to Brunswick County, Virginia in the 1750's, but not to Ireland. I assume that he emigrated either through Newport News or Philadelphia. It appears that information on Thomas Ayer's background derives from "Some Data about The Ayer Family in The South" by Louise (Lulu) Ayer Vandiver. She apparently received the information from her father, Lewis Malone, Jr. and from other relatives with whom she corresponded in the early 20th Century. We know from Lulu that Thomas was born to a Scots-Irish family, strongly suggests he was Irish and born in soutwestern Ireland and that he married Frances Malone in Virginia, before emigrating to South Carlina. Nothing I have ever seen suggests he was born in Scotland. Hope this helps.

It's a long time since you posted the message I'm replying to! I was just trying to find out why a small group of people online list my ancestor, Nancy Ayers (b. abt. 1799, wife of John Anderson, died in Franklin Co. MO 1848), as Nancy David Ayer, dau. of Zaccheus Ayer (b. 1771) and Sarah David. Checking around, I found your post saying you're a descendant of Zacheus Ayer and had information. I wonder if some of your information could help me connect some dots. I would certainly appreciate your help and/or reply.
Elinore

Some Ayer People with Maine Connections

I have no connection to any of these families. I am just posting info. I have come across while volunteering at the historical society. This is by no means a complete list, only the ones I was able to obtain. I have discovered the hard way that within a certain span of time, if you don’t have the date and place of death, it’s hard to track someone down.

Some of the names that appear to be maiden names may very well be married names and the other name given be the maiden name – at least it tells you a date and place of death – a good starting point. This is all the info. I have on these people although I do have a number of vital record books for the Knox County (Maine) area and would be willing to do a quick lookup or two. I am typing in literally hundreds of these entries so please be as specific as possible if you need a lookup.

Abbie S. Walker Ayer died Jan. 3, 1912 in Rockland. She is buried at the Sea View Cemetery in Rockland.

Ellen F. Stevens Ayer died Dec. 12, 192 in Rockland. She is buried at the Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.

Hannah B. (Ayer) Cochran died Aug. 7, 1902 in Rockland. She was the widow of E.H. Cochran. Hannah was born Oct. 25, 1817 in Freedom, Maine, the daughter of Peter and Jane (Bartlett) Ayer, both born in Freedom as well.
Okay, a liitle more research on NEHGS website finds:

Mary D. Wife of Edwin died Dec 29, 1859 @ 29y 7m 14d, born Andover..doesn't state her Maiden name. She died in Lawrence.

Now Nathaniel father of Edwin died Oct 27, 1872 in Winchester MA. @ 85y 4m 1d born in Haverhill, son of Obediah and Elizabeth Ayer of Haverhill. He apparently remarried on Nov 28, 1867 at age 66 to Ellen Cousiss(?) she 56 in Charlestown.

His (Nathaniels) first wife Elizabeth died April 24, 1855 @64yrs (in Winchester) she the dau of David and Mary Fosdick.

Edwin had a brother Warren that m in 1851.I'm sure there are lots others. Perhaps investing in membership to NEHGS would find you a lot of missing links.
His father appears to have been named Edwin Ayer of Haverhill, Mass.
Dale,
Is there any chance I can get a copy of the obit from you that you mentioned in your post of 9/06? I'm not interested in an authentic document so much as any names and dates that might possibly link my ggrandfather to ANY current Ayers. I am certainly willing to reimburse you for any expenses you may incur. Thanks,
Blessings,
Audie

I tried to email you, but its been a while since you posted here, so thought I would post and maybe you would see it.

Chandler Ayer, husband of Mary Reed, is my 3rd great grandfather. His son Llewellyn my 2nd Great Grandfather, then my Great Grandfather William and Grandfather Alfred.
I was wondering if you ever found Chandlers parents? I am stuck here also. I have been able to go back to the 1850 census, but anything before that is quite difficult to research. I have been meaning to go on a trip to Boothbay to check out the records but as of yet haven't been able to.

Also, the last place I find him listed is on the 1890 special veterans census of Windsor, Maine. Do you know where he is buried? I'm assuming it is around the veterans home he was in.

Charles Ayer in NH

There is an 8 year old Charles Ayer living in my great great grandfather's, Isaac D Smith, household in 1850 in Tuftonboro New Hampshire. I am trying to find out who this young man might be. It is possible he might be related to Isaac's wife Mary, although I have no idea what her maiden name was. Isaac and family, sans Charles, is living in Elliot Maine in the 1860 census. Would anyone have any idea who this young man might be?
thanks in advance
faye

Would like to communicate with you about descendants of Mary Barbara (Barbary) (KEGLEY) FOGLESONG. Mary Barbara married Christian FOGLESONG in Wythe County, Virginia and they were among a group who left Virginia and migrated into Indiana. The FOGLESONGS had fourteen children and one of the fourteen, Phoebe, married a Reverend John PRUNER. At this point I only show one daughter for them, Nancy, who married Charles Willett MASTERSON. Please reply to justpeachy@greenhills.net

Dianna in MO

I am looking for solid proof that Wm Henry Ayres and Sarah Kirkland Rentz had a daughter born 1855 named Susan Ellendor Ayer. Susan married John Dexter Platts before the Federal Census 1880. Susan is not enumerated in Wm. Henry's household in the 1860 or 1870 Federal Censuses.
