Sometimes John Axton, who migrated to Virginia in the 1600s, is given the middle name of Cullan. Can't find the source of or reason for this. Can anyone enlighten?

Has anybody any information on Bonita Babette Axton, born about 1923, Uxbridge/Hillingdon, Middlesex, England, or of her mother, Babette (née Bowering)?

Douglas Axton 1814 NC, s/o Bayliss & Eliz. Terry Axton ?????

I have a couple of questions.
1. Was his first wife's name, Nancy WADE?
2. Did Nancy die between 1850 & 1858?
3. Was JOHN Douglas' first name?
4. I found John D. Axton (age 45) in 1860, md to Matilda (age 23), with son John B. aged 13, and a young dau., Mary J. aged 5/12. Both John D. & John B.'s ages are consistant with those of Douglas & John in the 1850 census.
5. I cannot find the family in 1870. In 1880 I find Matilda (widowed) and several children living in Indiana. The age of the youngest child is 4 yrs. This would mean that John D(ouglas?) would have died between 1875 & 1880.
6. Does anyone know the maiden name of Matilda?
7. Does anyone know the burial locations for Nancy, John D./Douglas, or Matilda Axton?

THANKS.
r. unrein
Hi, I'm a descendant of Bayless Axton b. 1788 in Kentucky m. to Elizabeth Terry. His father was Isham Axton b. 1761 in England. You can find this on a 1790 census from North Carolina.
My Line:
Bayless Axton, William Levi Axton b. about 1814-19, William Lewis Axton b. 1849 (brother of Douglas), Temple Roy Axton B. 1891 who was my great-grandfather and brother-in-law to Thankful Axton. He lived in Colorado.

I have letter from a descendant of Levi Carter Axton (bother of Bayless) about the Kentucky Axton's if you would like a copy.

According to family tradition, my father's mother Lucy Jane Axton (b. Ohio Co. Ky. 23 Mar 1881; d. Ohio Co. 8 Jun 1953) was the daughter of James Taylor Axton and granddaughter of Levi Carter Axton. My father's middle name was Tracy, a possible indication of a connection to Lois Tracy Axton and/or John Parsons Tracy referred to in your posting. However, I have not seen any other documentation indicating that Lucy Axton was in fact the daughter of James Taylor Axton. I would be interested to hear if the biography you refer to concludes that my grandmother Lucy Axton was James Taylor Axton's daughter. And if a copy of William Fitch Axton's biography of the Kentucky Axtons and/or your article about Woodford Fitch Axton is available, I would be very grateful to receive it!

Many thanks!

Hi,
I corresponded a great deal with William Axton in the 80's and 90's. You seem to already have his info about the Axton family. I think he sent letters to all Axtons he knew of who might be part of the family seeking and providing information. I wrote and published a magazine article about Wood F.Axton during that time and William Axton added a picture. As you know, his father Ed was in on the Axton tobacco business from its inception. I was able to give William Axton some information on Isaac Axton's Civil War record. He and his brother Levi were court martialed for desertion. I do have family photos of Lois Tracy and Isaac Axton. William sent some of these to me. My great Aunt Annie Axton (Sissie) was a collector of all things Axton. She kept newspaper clippings about Wood Axton, which I have.
One is of William Axton at about 10 years old at a memorial for Wood Axton. I have a Civil War photo of Daniel Fitch Axton, Lois' brother. Aunt Sissie also documented the Tracy
line all the way back to Deacon Samuel Chapin of Springfield, Mass. I would be glad to provide anything I know of the family that you do not have. I have Lois Tracy Axton's death record. She died when her skirt caught in a trolley step and she was dragged some distance. I have the newspaper article about that, also.
Thanks for connecting. I enjoyed hearing from you. If you have family photos you would share, I'd love to know about them. Mary Bishop O'Brien (My grandmother was Willie Mae Axton Bishop).

Hi,
My Dad's cousin, William Fitch Axton, put together a very definitive biography of the Kentucky Axtons, beginning with details about Levi Carter Axton, his life and personality. Levi's father, Robert, we know little about, but do have a few details about Robert's wife, Margaret. From that point on down through history William Axton(son of Edwin Dymond Axton) and I collaborated and have much information about the family doings and whereabouts. I wrote a magazine aritcle about Woodford Fitch Axton, son of Lois Tracy Axton and John Parsons Tracy, who built a tobacco empire in Kentucky. What would you like to know? I just finished rereading all the info and it is fresh in my mind. Mary
Jennie Axton

Seeking info on Jennie Axton, married to Donald E Shain, lived in Tamaqua, PA. She was the mother of Edward Shain and Emily Jean Shain (born 1916)and died in childbirth about 1918. Donald Shain later remarried Ellen Crestwell. Any info on Jennie Axton would be much appreciated, as my mother in law (Emily), 92, has never even seen a photo of her birth mother, Jennie.

We know absolutely nothing about his parents. That is why I am looking for any ties of Kelley's to Axtons, since his sons middle name is Axton. Also the name Benjiman's middle name is Webster, which also has ties to the Ohio County Kelley's, and finally, Benjiman has a son named Daniel Boone Kelley and it is my understanding that the Ohio County Kelley's also have ties to Daniel Boone. I have been trying to find something on Benjiman for decades with no luck. My uncle recently allowed me to send in his Kelley Y chromosone dna to have it tested, and we had a match to a Kelley who goes back to VA and is known to be related to the Ohio County Kelley's. I think there is a possibility that my Benjiman MAY have been born in Missouri or at least lived in MO as a young child. So if there are any Axton's that may have ties to MO that originate in Ohio County KY, that too may be a lead.

Joel

Yes, the mother of David Axton Kelley, that's what I meant. I've got a Eliza B Axton b. 1854 in IN, Elizabeth Axton, dau of Bayless Axton likely born in Ohio Co.KY date unknown, Elizabeth A Axton b. 1839 in IN, & Elizabeth Ann Axton b. 1830 in IN. I'm going to take a look at the census today if I have time and see if I can match any Kelley's up with Axton's in Ohio Co., KY. It would be nice if we could find the name of David's mother. Who knows, it could be a connection...
LC

Well it would most likely be his mother that was an Axton if anything, not his wife. My Benjiman Webster Kelley left Ohio County KY and settled in Lafayette County MS where he married Eliza Hobbs in March of 1860. There is a possibility that Benjiman could have been born in Missouri, but I feel certain that his family returned to Ohio County KY. In addition to his son David Axton Kelley, and his own middle name as Webster, he also had a son Daniel Boone Kelley, all of these names tie to Ohio County KY and the Kelley's that settled there. I recently had the results come in for my Uncle's dna and he matches the dna of the Kelley's that were from VA (Bedford County I think), of whom are related to the Ohio County KY Kelley's. I do know a Moses Kelley was married to an Axton, Eliza if I remember correctly, so it is possible that the Axton name could be just a relative by marriage, not necessarily an ancestor.

Joel

There are records there, but I havent gotten into much of them. I've gotten some cemetery records and found one death record, etc. Do you know who Benjamin Kelly's wife was? I have a Bayless Axton with several daughters that I dont know much of anything about other than birth dates so far. Let me know.
LC

My 2nd great grandfather was Benjiman Webster Kelley b btwn 1817-1827 in KY (probably Ohio KY), one of his sons was named David Axton Kelley, so I am thinking he has a tie to the Axtons of Ohion COunty KY.

Regards
Joel H.

Joy,
We have been in touch before, haven't we? Edmond's parents were George Hunter Axton and Mary Bee. Edmond had a brother, George Hunter Axton, Jr. George Sr.'s parents were James W. Axton and Isabella Howe. This much I know for sure. Beyond that I can only surmise. James' parents may be (are LIKELY to be) Jeremiah Axton and Polly Kramer. Isabella's parents may be, but this is not at all certain, Alexander Howe and Elizabeth Rush.

Eliza Jane's parents were Samuel Griffeth Morris and Mary Elizabeth Morris(?)(This may actually have been her maiden name)Sam's parents were Samuel and Jane (Farquhar) Morris. I do not know anything else about them yet. Samuel Griffeth Morris' sister, Rachel Jane, married Jacob Schock, had a daughter Jennie who married George Hunter Axton, Jr. So Edmond and Hunter's wives were first cousins.

I have some jpegs of your grandparents if you would like me to email them. I would be happy to send anything that I have, but progress has been slow since we last communicated. I have only gotten some clues about the Howes. The Axtons still seem to have come out of nowhere.

Sydney's mother: Celia Ellen Martin, parents: Police constable Edward Edmund Martin/Fanny(?Frances -also Mom's middle name)Pepper
Recent email gives connection to living decendant by email.
Re: John AXTON & dau Ann SMITH, later WHITECOTTON: 1600s Stafford, VA, USA

Hi Betty,
My Axten information is from the 1800's in England. I believe I do not have a full set of siblings in the earlier 2 generations - Jeremiah Axten in Watford,Hertfordshire and Thomas Axten, but have reliable information on the descendants of Sydney Axten b. 1884 in Kent, England to present in Canada. I think the list of Jeremiah's children is incomplete, showing only Thomas, John and a much younger sister, Louisa, who died at 5 years of age.

Sydney's mother was Celia Ellen Martin m. 1)Thomas Axton (clerical error of census taker or transcriber), 2)Harry Johnston. Sydney's siblings were older sisters, Ellen and Gertrude and a younger sister, Harriet.

Celia Ellen Martin's parents were Edward Edwin Martin m. Fanny(?Frances)Pepper. Celia b. 1858 had a sister one year younger, Mary Martin.

Thomas had one brother, John Axten shown on the 1881 and 1891 census records, who named his first son, John.

Sydney is the only sibling known to have emigrated (early 1914). He corresponded with Gertrude, but his wife had a bad habit of cutting heads and bodies out of pictures if she came to dislike them and likely destroyed Gertrude's letters, but Mom has preserved as many photos and documents as possible.

Sydney Axten's name on the ship manifest is spelled incorrectly as Sidney Akten. Sydney could not have seen this document. If he had, he would have insisted on his name being spelled correctly as he was very particular about having his name spelled properly. Like his grandfather, Sydney was a capenter who had gained many other building skills. I suspect that he listed himself as a farmer for emigration purposes if farmers were in demand in Canada at the time. He landed in New Brunswick, but clearly went on to Toronto in time to have a short courtship and marry in 1914.

My 90 year old mother is the living second daughter of Sydney Axten m. Margaret Greer in 1914, both born in 1884 Margaret was born in Donegal, Ireland. Her parents, John Greer m. Jane Wilson and 11 of their 13 children emigrated to Canada in 1900/01. One child, James, had died and the eldest Agnes was married and unwilling to leave Ireland.
My mother has a list of the siblings, some pictures and documents including a Will.

I would be interested to know if this family has turned up in your lineage and if we are linked. It is possible that missing siblings were ones who emigrated, disappearing from census records in the UK as Sydney did. He turns up in the 1891 census, but did not emigrate to Canada until 1914, so I wonder where he was for those missing years.

If I can share any information with you, I will be happy to do so.
In another post, I read that Axton was a place name with Axten meaning 'from Axton', so the Axten spelling may have evolved from that.

Contact: sharon1333@sympatico.ca

Re: Origins of AXTON Name (ENG & Wales)

Hi Jim,
My grandfather was Sydney Axten b.1884, Kent, England, who emigrated to Canada in 1914. Sydney's father's name was Thomas Axton in the census records sent by a kind UK researcher. This was clearly a spelling or transcription error by a census taker or transcriber in records as the name reverts to Axten as soon as a Scholar is listed in the family.

Sydney's mother was Celia Ellen Martin m. 1)Thomas Axten, 2)Harry Johnston. Sydney was my mother's father. Like his father and grandfather,Jeremiah Axten, he died early.

I am very interested in tracing this line back as far as it goes and willing to share any incoming data, especially descendant data missing from this site. I'm building a tree called AXTEN on Ancestry, inserting information only as it is confirmed.

Fortunately, my mother is still living to confirm information directly from her father. She just turned 90 and has wanted to know more about her father since he died in her late teens. She has been elated with the preliminary information about her father and his family, but I'd like to be able to give her as much as possible.

Do you have an Axten tree or one containing Axtens that, as a newbie, I haven't found or might confirm the census info sent to me by a kind UK researcher?

There is another family line I'm searching on my father's side - his father Mervin Cameron Williams m. Martha Davidge; parents of Mervin: John Darlington Williams m. Marion Fraser Cameron.

No combination of surnames has produce any hits on the above people.

When my father was alive, I thought he said John Darlington Williams originated in Wales, where they found descendants, but Mom thinks this was in Ireland. Dad referred to Powys Estate, which sounds Welsh to me.

John Darlington Williams emigrated from UK or Ireland to Nova Scotia, Canada. The earliest location I know of for him is in Trenton, Nova Scotia, Pictou County. They moved the whole family and house to Great Village, Nova Scotia when Dad, Frank Ross Williams was a young child, circa. 1919. The family farm has been passed down through 3 generations in Great Village and will be passed to a fourth.

My original focus was on Dad's mother's Davidge family who originated in England, settling in Burgeo, Newfoundland, Canada. Our family genealogist compiled a family history book of over 700 descendants of John Davidge m. Sarah Jane Guy, 1848. This meticulously sourced information is being put onto a Tree by one of the experts in our research group.

Last year, our family historian traced Sarah Jane Guy to her mother, Ann Matthews m. William H. Guy d.1859 in Burgeo, NL; Ann's parents were John Matthews m. Sarah Bagg; Sarah Bagg's parents were Hugh Bagg m Jane?. Hugh Bagg lived in Lamoline, NL, later founding Cape La Hune in the Burin Peninsula, NL. Hugh b.about 1759/Jane b.about 1763 are my 5xgreat-grandparents who are positively linked to newly found cousins in the U.S.

I have successfully located William H. Guy b.1770, Leeds, England that show he died in Burgeo, NL, with only a death date and name, but can't get into the associated Higgins Tree where all my known family lines appear to converge.

After over 15 years of research by various family members, we are currently blocked at tracing John Davidge's origins. John went to Burgeo "as a servant to Uncle John Matthews". The writings of Joseph Small are unclear as to whether John Davidge came "with" John Matthews or "to" him. We do not know if he came directly from England or was born in NL. The term 'Uncle' was used to differentiate between John Matthews and his father of the same name, who was referred to as "old man Matthews".

We know John Davidge drowned along with his 18 y/o son, George, while rescuing shipwreck victims in April, 1867. His age at death is unknown. Like most Davidges of his era, he was illiterate. Rough calculations for an approximate birth date of 1820-1828 are based on his being in his early to mid-teens when he arrived in Burgeo,NL, working off a possible 4-5 years if indentured and not being substantially older than his 18 year old bride. While I have old family pictures, his face is mostly covered by a large beard and moustache.

I came across a record on Newfoundland Grand Banks Genealogy that suggests he may have had a sister, Elizabeth, whose marriage took place in Burgeo, although she is not on any census records for the south shore of NL. I have not been able to find out her husband's name or where they went.

There is another Thomas Davidge line in NL with living descendants. Thomas' son or grand-son made several trips by sea to visit the Davidges in Burgeo, but we have not managed to determine what relationship Thomas may have had with the Davidges.

After several months of futile solo searching, I formed a group of researchers that now span Canada, U.S., AU, NZ and UK. By pooling our knowledge and research, we completed one line back to John Davidge m. Ann Small in the early 1700's in England and reunited my family of the Guy/Matthews/Bagg line with a line in the U.S. in a very short time.

The completed line of Donald Davidge has living descendants. When Donald viewed my copy of the family history book, he instantly identified my great-uncle Alfred as "identical" to his own grandfather, Edwin Davidge from Market Lavington, Wiltshire. Donald also recognized other 'familiar' faces to his own family and most closely resembles one of Alfred's sons. I would not give as much credence to facial recognition but for the fact that Donald is a retired Chief of Detectives who has specialized training in facial recognition. His parents were Franky Davidge m. Ethel Helson as shown on the original marriage certificate. It is a matter of time and luck until we find out where our families connect on the family tree.
This tree is called the Davidge Tree and is owned by Robin McLeod (in our group)- let me know if you want an invitation to view this tree and I will contact her.

We are aware that forms of the Davidge name go back to the 1100's, but none of the researchers have been able to pierce the barrier of John Davidge/Ann Small to date. I'm convinced that the answers exist; we just haven't found them yet.

There is a headstone in the Wells Cathedral cemetery that shows a date of 1677 for Ann Davidge, wife of Jno.

If any of this rings a bell, or you have contact with any of the owners of the Higgins Tree, I would appreciate your contacting me at sharon1333@sympatico.ca

If you are in contact with any owner of the Higgins Tree, you have my consent to share my email address and ask the person to contact me.

Thank-you in advance for any help you might be able to offer to enlighten this newbie.

Sharon Williams
Even with early deaths of Jeremiah, son Thomas(father of Sydney, Gertrude,?Harriet,?Sarah, I believe later siblings may exist, accounting for emigration to U.S.

Suspect my info lacks siblings who emigrated to U.S. rather than Canada.

Jeremiah/Mary Anne Axten's great-grandson, Sydney Axten emigrated to Canada in 1914. Sydney m. Margaret Greer of Donegal, Ireland. Margaret was one of 13 siblings, children of John Greer m. Jane Wilson, who emigrated to Canada 1900/01. The eldest sibling, Agnes was married and stayed in Ireland. Isabel, Samuel, John, James, ?Elizabeth, Wilson, Florence, Fanny/Frances are some of given names of Greer family.

Thanks,
Sharon
