John Chapman. Awbrey of Red River County

John C. Awbrey was my 2nd great grandfather. He was the 1st Awbrey to migrate to Texas. He moved from Alabama, to Columbia County, Arkansas, then to Red River County. He brought a lot of his extended family over here. This all happened between 1860-1865. I don't know the exact date or the exact place they made a home. I know most of them are buried at the Old Shamrock Cemetary (NW 2/3rds of the cemetary).

Does anyone know why they moved to Texas? Were they trying to get away from the Civil War? Did they come to Texas with their slaves in order to keep them from running away and to keep them as slaves? Was there any other Reasons? Does anyone know where they actually lived at, plot of land, or such?

As a child, I lived for many years between Woodland and Addeilou. We thought we were the only Awbreys at all in Red River county. Just 2 years ago I learned that I had lived just 10 miles (line of site) from where all of my ancestors were buried. I never knew of them. I wished I did...

Thanks and God bless

The Awbrey's buried in Old Shamrock Cem. are my family. I am looking for tumbstone for Etichie,Alicanie Bell Awbrey. I have been there and no stone was found. I did find bases for where stones should be and one headstone laying in dirt away from a base. DO you know anything about her? She died in child birth along with her son in 1886. She is my grandfathers mother. Any info you have would be GREAT if you would let me know..I have a book that has been published and would be happy to share info. with you.
