My Awalts are from Franklin Co. Tenn and Awalt Tn. area. My Sarah Belle Sorrick married James M Awalt in 1890's. They had Mary, Frank born 1904 in Tn., Alline born 1908 in Tn. The Awalts lived in a town that was flooded under several years ago in a dam build by government. Most graves were moved but not all. JAmes and Sarah both died and buried in Winchester Tn., Franklin County. Does anyone recognize these names? Thanks for help.

Pam,

My Awalts are also from Franklin County, Tennessee. My third great-grandfather, Jacob Posey Awalt, was born 7 Oct. 1822 in Franklin Co, TN. His father was Jacob C. Awalt born 1788 NC and died 1866 in Franklin Co TN. Jacob C.'s father was Michael Abraham Awalt, b 1755 in Philadelphia PA and died 1835 in Franklin Co TN. Michael Abraham Awalt's wife Eva Speck, born in Mecklenburg NC in 1763, also died in Franklin County, TN, in 1848.

E-mail me at alanasuzm@cs and I'll send you the information that I have. Our Awalts may be kin, although my line starting with Jacob Posey Awalt came to Texas in the 1850s.

Alana, thanks for the information. There has to be a connection. I'm planning on going up to Winchester this summer to do some in-house research. Hope I can find more on the Awalts and the Town of Awalt.

I am searching for my great-grandmother Ethel Mattie Awalt's family. I am thinking that General Hawthern might be her father. Ethel Mattie was born on June 25, 1904 and she married Jethro Jackson Lovvorn.
Her mother is Lena Mae Awalt and Mattie's brother is Edward.
Ethel Mattie died May 31, 1994.
Lena Mae died in the late 1950's.
I don't know much about Edward or Mr Awalt.
I do have a family photo of the Awalt Family.
If you can help I would really appreciated.
Thanks,
Sarah Horton

Hi Sarah, I don't find the names you listed in my short record of Awalts. But I will continue checking and let you know if their names come up. The Awalts came down from Ohio and settled in a township in Franklin County Tennessee they named Awalt. When Tenn. built a dam and flooded that area the families dispersed. Many had already moved back to Ohio. You might check census records for Ohio.
