Sarah Autrey

I am inquiring about information related to a Sarah Autry/Autrey born 1802 and married to Joel Pridgen 1823. I have for years been told she was Native American and the daughter of Major John Pitchlynn. I do not know where that was started and I believe this is incorrect information.
I was given the pages to Joel's bible last year when my father died. There is nothing to indicate anything about this woman. There is also nothing that indicates that Joel was ever married before or evidence of other children.
I have a census from 1850 that indicates she was born in N.C. I know there is also a will that states her last name is Autry.
I did the DNA testing with ancestry and there is NO native american. Also Major John Pitchlynn has an extensive ancestry record in Mississippi and she is not in it. However, I have a lot of Autry hits in my DNA. Does anyone know of a Sarah Autry that was born in 1802?

Kathy

Our John c. Autry, father of William Henry Harrison Autry, supposedly died c 1841 in SC. William Harrison's mother was Sarah Tillery. She then remarried and moved to TN. Could this be wrong and he left SC instead? A rock wall for years.

I have a book by Miles Autry published around 1964. He traces the descendants of Captain John Autry who died in Georgia in 1788. Col. John Autry that you reference is likely a descendant. I have the Miles Autry book in hard copy and electronic version (it was published as a pdf by the Church of Latter Day Saints). This is my lineage so I am very interested in learning all I can.

Let me add a blip to this discussion of Texas Autrey's.

I am hunting for Samuel Edward Autrey born 1895 in Missouri/Texas/Georgia (take you pick) and died 1954 in the VA hospital in Dallas.
His parents were probably Taylor Autrey and Mary Flowers.
He married (1) Annie May Howard (parents Carl J. Howard and Mary Ellen Housden) and (2) Ruby Del Austin (parents Andrew F. Austin and Sally Panther)

Samuel and Annie apparently divorced. They had 5 children Ruby (married a Valentine, a Crabtree and a Bell), Woodrow married Cora Mae Price, Mary Jo married a Williams, Bobby (male) and an infant who died young. Samuel and his family lived in Grayson and Dallas Counties, Texas They may have had connections with Hopkins and Harris County Texas as well

Dallas (Tx) Morning News; 03 Jan 1955
Samuel E. Autrey, 2701 Northwest Eighteenth St. Forth Worth. Survived by wife Mrs. Ruby Autrey; sons. Woodrow Autrey, both of Fort Worth; Bobby Autrey, Overton, Texas; daughters, Mrs. Ruby Carbtree, Fort Worth; Mrs. Mary Jo Williams, Greenton, Texas: brother Johnnie Autrey, Pilot Point, Texas; sister, Mrs. G. F. Cole, Texarkana; stepson, Earl Marshall, Gilmer, Texas; stepdaughters, Mrs. Edith Adair, Odessa; Mrs. Iline, Texarkana. Services: Monday, 1 p.m. Sparkman-Brand Chapel, Chaplain George Nelson officiating. Interment Crown Hill.

If this sounds familiar to anyone I would love to pick your brain as there are many things that don't make sense in what I have uncovered

Vicky Drake
dvicky@cox.net
Autry researchers noted that John Autry & his wife Margaret named their first son Zachary Taylor Autry. He was the first son of John & Margaret but both had been married before. But because of the name of this son, Zachary Taylor, they ASSUMED incorrectly that his middle name was the surname of his mother. WRONG Margaret's maiden name was Margaret Mattix, dau. of Edward Mattix and Elizabeth (ex-Quaker) Bond. At the time of Zachary's birth, his father was coroner of Ft. Smith. In charge of the post at that time was Colonel Zachary Taylor so they named their child after the Fort's commander. Colonel Zachary Taylor later became President of the United States. Please remove the surname Taylor from Margaret and add Mattix.
Nan Wolf

Hello. I have William Christopher Autry 1829 1898 as the son of John Campbell Autry and Margaret A. Taylor. I have the parents you listed as his grandparents. William Christopher Autry was murdered in 1898 by his son Solomon. Also killed in the massacre were William Christopher Autry's wife (Solomon's stepmother)and two of Solomon's children. Solomon attempted to kill his wife and baby who were present but the wife, Dora Creekmore Autry, was able to escape with the baby. I am directly descended from William Christopher Autry. I am not familiar with Belinda Haywood.

Does anyone have information that would explain why William F Autry is identified in the 1930 Census as Henry L. in Tarrant County, TX? The family members seem to match up, but "Henry L" is a long way from "William F" so I'm wondering if its the right family.

Yes, internet is a beautiful thing. Last night I actually found an early 1800s map of Edgecombe county that showed "Little Swamp" creek, which was a marker in the survey of Land that Cornelius deeded to his son Isom (Isham). There was also a much larger creek labeled "Otter Creek" and I can't help wonder if that might be a corruption of Autry Creek that occurred once Cornelius and sons/brothers moved out of the area.

I've saved images of what documents I can find online, but sometimes all you get is the information, which can be incorrect. I found an Autry listed on Ancestry as Jewish, and when I looked at the original document, it was a transcription error. Things like that bother my OCD.

I suppose I hope a trip to NC would turn up some old Bibles or records hoarded away in some church or dusty basement. Plus, its very cool to actually get to put your hands on the record; I've gotten to do that for some other family lines, just not in the Autrys.

Re: Early ancestors and familial relationships

I have wondered if the Alex Jr. is perhaps the son of the Alex who was granted land in 1740, as it seems that may be the only Alexander old enough to have had a "jr" during the war.

Brooks/Bundy cite both Simon and an Alexander as being on the tax rolls in Rowan County, which lends a bit of support to your theory of Simon as his father.

In one of Alexander Autry's deeds, it states that "Alexander Autrey, brother to John, was given 300 acres on Fishing Creek." So, it would appear there were several Alexander's roaming about, if there was a need to specify which Alexander was recording the deed.

So maybe there was Alex Jr. son of Alex Autray, Alexander, son of Simon, and possibly yet another Alexander, brother of John, possible son of Cornelius.

But, its all speculation, and I find myself going again and again to the muddle at the root of the family tree. I fear you are correct, though, and its not likely the mystery will be solved.

Proof that William Autry who was residing in Pendleton District, SC, in 1800 was one of the six surviving children of Lieutenant Simon Autry of the Wilkes County Georgia Patriot Militia who was killed in a skirmish near King's Mountain in 1780, is to be found in transcript form in _Wilkes County, Georgia Deed Books A - VV 1704-1806_ compiled by Michal (sic) Martin Farmer, and published by Farmer Genealogy Company, Dallas, Texas, 1996. This is proof that this John was Simon's son, only... not any of the other stuff I just said. That is in affidavits of Thomas and his son S. R. (Sidney Runnels) Bankston in the Revolutionary War pension record of Jacob Kelly (R5843).

Mr. Farmer's large two-volume book can be purchased in Windows compatible CD format for $25, here: http://michalfarmer.com/ (I have no association with Mr. Farmer, financial or otherwise.)

If anyone wants a photographic copy of just the pertinent part of the page (633), you may contact me by e-mail.

Richard White
Tallahassee, FL

Re: Early ancestors and familial relationships

In the 17th & 18th century meanings if terms of relationship were not so restricted as now and Alexander, Jr. was not necessarily a son of Alexander, Sr. He was definitely younger, because that is the literal meaning of "junior", but beyond that I can only reiterate that Alexander's 1773 land record for the Ceded Lands showed (other than Alexander himself) only females in his family, besides the age range of his children being less than John's... that is to say his oldest child was younger than John's oldest child. The amount of Ceded Land that could be purchased was based on the size of a family including slaves, so it would have been in Alexander's interest to claim any sons he had if he had any. John was a 1st lieutenant at least by 1778 (probably earlier as well) and Simon was a lieutenant from 1775; but both Alexanders were privates in 1778. By February of 1779 John was a captain. Captain Robert Carr was killed by Indians when Carr's Fort which at the time had a garrison of only a dozen or two Patriots was overrun by several hundred Tories and Indians (probably from Florida) commanded by a Tory captain named Hamilton. Pickens and Clarke sent word to the garrison via a Patriot Captain also named Hamilton, not to surrender... but it surrendered and the Tories and Indians rushed inside just before Pickens and Clarke arrived; so they laid siege to Carr's Fort. In the meantime another 600 or so Tories and Indians under a Col. Boyd crossed into Georgia from SC and Captain John Autry who was a Ninety Six in SC at the time was sent to Carr's Fort to warn Pickens and Clarke of their approach. Pickens and Clarke circled behind Boyd and followed him for several days till he neared the vicinity of Carr's Fort and stopped to camp at Kettle Creek, at which location Boyd was killed and his force was killed, captured or completely dispersed. Upon learning of Boyd's fate the Tories and Indians at Carr's Fort also withdrew.

The various scattered facts about Simon, John and Alexander imply that Simon and John were older than Alexander and Simon could have possibly been quite a bit older. I believe it far more likely that Alexander "Jr." was a son of Simon or John than of Alexander.

There is, by the way, a holographic certification by Captain John Autry of Alexander Autry, Jr.'s Revolutionary War militia service in Alexander Autry's Georgia land bounty file. It appears that John signed his name "Awtry" but I wouldn't bet my life on it. In various Revolutionary War pension records... I haven't actually counted, but I would say there were probably at least 8 different spellings of Autry. Our forebears were very creative spellers.

I'm sorry... I'm trying to be polite but emphatic, and maybe I'm falling short of that mark but the only way I can think of to put it is: You're wrong. I am well acquainted with the story of Micajah Autry's attempt to shoot Santa Anna. It was quite clearly a legitimate act of war during a war and during a battle. Investment or siege is a phase of a battle intended to take a strong point such as a fort over a prolonged period of time. It might end in the siege being lifted by arrival of support or some distraction that draws the besiegers away, surrender of the besieged place, a final assault and taking of it by brute force, or some other outcome. I believe it most likely that if the event you referred to took place at all it occurred during the siege phase of the Battle of the Alamo, though the author of the particular write-up you referred to seems to imply that it took place just before the final assault. What Santa Anna was doing at the time was irrelevant. It would not have been an assassination attempt if Santa Anna had been eating breakfast or taking a nap; but in fact if the story is believed he was taking what is called a leader's reconnaissance... which is an integral part of conduct of a battle.

On the other hand, assassination is generally considered to be an act of murder.

Transcribed versions of the Wilkes County, Georgia, Ceded Lands land records and Probate records are on the web. The Southern Campaign of the American Revolution Revolutionary War pension records transcripts are on the web although I believe they are not yet complete. The account of Simon Autry's death in a skirmish near King's Mountain in 1780 and a statement of his daughter's marriage to Thomas Bankston is in an affidavit of a son of Thomas Bankston (Sidney Runnels Bankston who was apparently named after the 2d Lieutenant at Carr's Fort in 1778) in the pension application of Jacob Kelley, who was in that skirmish. Mention of Simon Autry's 1775 commission is on the web somewhere though at the moment I don't recall where. Everything I said about Simon Autry except his 1775 commission and his ownership of land in Sampson County came from those records... all of which can be accessed for free. The Recorder of Deeds for Sampson County (and most other NC counties) has put indexes and digitized copies of original land records on the web, although I could find none that referenced Simon Autry... and access to those is free as well. At one point in time the two surviving 1778 muster rolls of Robert Carr's Company at Fort were on the web but when I checked more recently I didn't find them. Besides the transcripts of the Revolutionary War pension records, digitized copies of the original documents are being put on the web by Fold3, which is a paid subscription service. I can't say that going to NC won't help, but to a large extent the records are actually being made accessible anywhere there is web access.

Re: John Autry, Blount County Tennessee - 1800

Hi Richard I am reaching out to anyone that I believe may have information on Tennessee Autry Families... I am researching my 4th Great Grandmother Kizzar Autry... she was supposed to have been born in Tennessee around 1832-1836 (varies by census) she moved to Arkansas and married a Joseph Etris. in one census it shows her name as Kizzia E Etris and says she was born May 1836 and that her father was born in Virginia and her mother was born in Tennessee... anything at all that I can dig on could be a start to finding her parents... any information you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance and Thanks for your time

Patricia Dersam Gomez
Excellent point on the names in John's line; the family did seem to name kids after their fathers, did they not? I keep thinking since the "Brooks/Bundy and Blair books were done quite some time ago, that maybe new records have been uncoverered or digitized since then, and we will get a clearer picture of who was who at that time. One of these days I will get to go to NC and poke around myself. :)

Richard,
It wasn't during a battle; Micajah truly was selected for an assasination attempt. Every morning, Santa Ana would walk around the perimeter of the Alamo, well out of firing range, except for one area, that for whatever reason, required he be a bit closer. As Micajah was considered the best shot of all the soldiers there, he was selected to make the attempt to assassinate Santa Ana when he passed through that area. He missed, because it was too far away. After that, Santa Ana no longer made his patrol, and the battle for the Alamo took place shortly thereafter. But for a rifle with a better range, the battle might have been averted. This is well-documented, not family lore. Below is a link to a synopsis of the tale, along with a picture of Micajah. The picture is not from the period, but was painted later. At one time it was hanging in the library section of the Alamo museum, but I haven't been there in years, so don't know if the pic is still up or not.
Regards,
Cori

http://clintonnc.com/view/full_story/19230726/article-Micaja...
