I don't know if any of you know about this, but there was a
Fort Attaway in
Rome,
Georgia. It isn't standing today, but I found a website about it and there is a current court battle over the land it used to sit on. I spoke with one of the owners of the land where
Fort Attaway used to stand and she and her husband are in a legal battle to keep the land from being condemned. There was a battle during the civil war that actually took place there. I asked her which
Attaway the
Fort was named after and she told me that it was named after Thomas
Attaway, son of
Harley Attaway (
Harley was a son of Elisha
Attaway and Lettice
Barton). Thomas was killed in the second battle of
Manassas and to honor him, the fort was named after he and his family. I believe the battle occured from May 16-18 in 1864. I hope this is a fun and new piece of info. for some of you and please take the time to look up
Fort Attaway on the internet and if you can, please help with the preservation efforts. Sincerely, Nancy
